Christian Light Reading (Gr. 1-8)
With the goal of teaching children to think clearly and logically, this series might have everything you are looking for in a reading program. The readers include enjoyable anthologies of stories and other prose selections as well as poetry and a generous dose of Bible selections (KJV). There is a strong character building emphasis as well as a foundational biblical and Christian worldview. The accompanying LightUnits review phonics (lower elementary), competently cover reading comprehension (all levels), emphasize vocabulary development, and introduce literary analysis (middle school). There is also biblical review and application as well as encouragement toward Bible memorization. Teacher Guides (coil-bound) are designed to be used with the Reader and the LightUnits to provide a guided reading program. Well-organized and laid out, the detailed teachers instructions and daily schedules are easy to follow and include reduced copies of the LightUnits pages.
The hardcover Readers are a nice, just-right-for-small-hands size that lay flat with ease. As you would expect, font size gradually diminishes throughout the grade levels. Colorful covers and inside accent color produce an inviting appearance, but there is a reminder of the programs Mennonite origins visible in the illustrations depicting their particular mode of womens apparel. Vocabulary development is enhanced by boldfaced words that are listed in a glossary in each book along with literary terms.
Just reading through the Readers would be beneficial, but the accompanying support material is well done. With symbols to indicate when teacher help is needed, LightUnits are designed to allow the student to work somewhat independently in the upper elementary and middle grades,. Each LightUnit has 16 lessons that include a review day and test day. To be completed in either a semester working every day or over a year working 2-3 days per week, there are 80 lessons in each course. LightUnit answers for grades 1-3 are found in the Teacher Guides. In grades 4-6, answers to LightUnit exercises are available in the LightUnit Answer Keys and in the Teacher Guide. In Grades 7-8, answers to LightUnit exercises are found only in the LightUnit Answer Key.
Teacher Guides provide detailed teachers instructions, and daily schedules. Helpful appendices include: study words, story verses, an index of character traits, scope and sequence, index of skills taught, alternate reproducible tests with answers (the LightUnits also contain tests), books for extra reading, and alphabetical lists of all stories and poems. Reduced copies of the student pages with answers are included in both the Teacher Guide and in the LightUnits Answer Key.
Course components for the Sunrise 2nd Ed. include the Reader, LightUnits (five magazine-size worktexts sold as a set), and the Teacher Guides. Starting with Grade 4, there are also Quizzes/Tests and LightUnits Answer Keys that are available. Answer Packages include these two answer keys. Complete Sets include all available items for the grade level. The older Sunrise Ed Teacher Guides (remaining only in Grades 7 & 8) had only an answer key without reduced student pages. ~ Janice
