It’s always a joy when Classical Academic Press puts together a new curriculum. This chronological world history program strives to foster virtue and wisdom in students while guiding them to understand the world we live in. Covering history over the span of four years, each year includes two semester-long textbooks. Book 1A and 1B are available now while subsequent levels will follow. Level 1 covers 3200 – 1600 BC (1A – Early/Middle Bronze Age; 1B – Late Bronze/Early Iron).
The Student Edition includes weekly chapter lessons, the textual narrative, and sidebars packed with fascinating historical and architectural tidbits. There are also discussion questions, exercises, hands-on projects, maps, and activities plus really nice Greek/Latin root word studies (their specialty). The Teacher Edition has a full student text plus detailed teacher notes & tips, answers, and sample responses. A digital resource packet is available for an additional fee from the publisher with supplemental material such as: entertaining songs summarizing events, suggested reading lists, printable downloadable files including full-color timelines, reference charts, and blank maps, and Biblical Connections (locations, historical figures, and scripture verses). There is also a free supplemental resource available from the publisher with links to museum collections of artifacts and other fun tidbits. Icons in the teacher’s edition will let you know when to reference this optional resource.
While Curious Historian is presented in a more standard format than other elementary programs such as Story of the World, it implements many nice features such as full color images, timelines, and sidebar details and focuses on aspects of culture that may not be covered in other curricula.
