Using visual cues and teacher/parent guidance, even the littlest readers can deduce and predict what is ahead in these simple workbooks from Scholastic. Each book has 25 cartoon pages with a page of exercises. Directions say to cover all 4 images on the page, asking about the title first, and then revealing the images one by one. The questions ask kids to think about what they know and extends to other related things. For example, the images show typical weather for the 4 seasons. The questions ask, “What does the wind do to kites?” and “What can you build with snow?” They then shade in circles for true/false and draw their favorite weather. Kids can color in the illustrations and talk about them one more time. It’s an age appropriate way to enhance reading comprehension. Do them over a summer to get ready for the school year, or add them to your ELA program as a weekly supplement. Reproducible for home/classroom use. ~Sara
