CW Advanced: Herodotus
Emphasis is on argumentative essay writing and analysis with advanced treatment of introductory and concluding paragraphs. Covers selections from Herodotus' Histories, the Greek myths, Athanasius'On the Incarnation of the Word of God, Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People, and Aeschylus' trilogy The Oresteia among others. It's suggested that the student read through many of these classic works during the school year. Accordingly, this course would constitute two semesters of high school literature and writing.
Modern paragraph conventions, how to write proper citations, and timed essays are also covered. Because the emphasis of the course is on judicial rhetoric - the rhetoric of the courtroom - a concurrent study of a beginning level logic text (i.e. Traditional Logic I) is recommended.
The non-consumable Herodotus core text (pb) is required and the completion of Diogenes: Chreia is recommended. The Answer Key is a non-consumable paperback with answers to most of the Herodotus' exercises and space for teacher's notes. The Student Guide is consumable, highly recommended and now available in printed format. 30 weeks. ~ Janice
