Theodore Boone Series

When authors primarily write for one age group or genre and try to branch out, it's not always a success. So when I picked up the first novel in this series for middle-schoolers by John Grisham, I wasn't sure what to expect. But then I couldn't put it down! As the son of two lawyers, a real estate lawyer and a divorce lawyer, 13-year-old Theo can't decide if he wants to be a judge or a courtroom lawyer when he grows up. He's probably the only teenager in town who routinely visits the courthouse, getting permission to sit in on trials and visiting judges. In the first book, there's a high-profile murder case that Theo is following. When he's introduced to a witness who has important evidence but won't come forward, Theo becomes reluctantly involved in the case and must use all of his smarts (and connections!) to somehow bring the evidence to light. Fast-paced and well-written, this series offers today's generation of young readers a smart new teenage investigator to follow! pb. - Jess
