American Adventures Series
These high-interest "true stories from America's past" provide snapshot views of particular people or events in history. Volume 1 covers from 1770-1870, Volume 2 from 1870 to 1993. Selections are short, just under three pages each. Some black and white photographs or illustrations are included. Readings are preceded by a vertical timeline showing this and surrounding events. A "What Else Was Happening?" box sets the stage for the story. Following the selection are three sections of activities: Writing/Journal, Discussion, and Cooperative Group/Research activities. The sectioning here seems rather arbitrary; let's just say that "varied" activities and discussion questions follow each selection. Most of these people and events are not covered in any depth in standard textbooks, so these volumes would provide a good way to "dig deeper" into facets of your history study.
