Horses of Half Moon Ranch
You don't have to be a horse lover to enjoy these tales with teens (and the horses of course) as their star characters. Half-Moon Ranch is in the Rocky Mountains and takes in guests from all over the country. Some guests have horse-sense while others have none, making for some lively tales. Teen boys and girls work at the ranch tending the horses and guide trail rides.
I loved how the girls are portrayed as independent rather than boy-crazy. Each character is developed in a way that the reader forms an opinion of them. In my head, I was predicting what each may do when given various challenges. Would he lie? Would she stand up for herself? Would he defend someone else? Would she tell on him? The horses themselves are interesting characters too: the proud Arabian, the big and calm white one, the steady sorrel mare. They have cool names like Cadillac, Lucky, Crazy Horse, and Jitterbug, with some seriously distinct personalities. The stories are engaging and age appropriate. I would guess that if you got one, your child would be asking for more. 152 pgs, pb. ~ Sara
