Description
Based on the revolutionary First Form Latin series, First Form Greek is written for parents and teachers with or without a Greek background. Its goal is to present the grammar so logically and so systematically that anyone can learn it. At the same time, we have adapted the Latin First Form Series to account for the differences between Greek and Latin, such as the new alphabet, overlapping sounds, more variation within paradigms, and less regularity. First Form Greek overcomes these challenges with the addition of weekly vocabulary reviews, more frequent recitation, and an expanded dictionary entry for Greek verbs.
Recommended Prerequisites: At least two years of Latin grammar (ideally First and Second Form Latin) and the Greek Alphabet Book. However, students who are new to Greek may spend additional time in Lesson 1 and learn the Greek alphabet that way. Students who have completed these prerequisites (Second Form Latin and the Greek Alphabet Book) may begin First Form Greek as early as 6th grade.
The First Form Greek Instructional DVDs (5 discs, 8 hours, 10-20 minutes/lesson) feature superb explanations by Highlands Latin School teacher Elizabeth Pierce. Mrs. Pierce teaches classical studies and Greek at Highlands Latin School in Louisville, Kentucky. She received her B.A. in Linguistics from the University of Tennessee and an M.Div. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Her First Form Greek Instructional DVDs include helpful on-screen notes, illustrations, diagrams, recitations, and all the oral drills in the First Form Greek Teacher Manual.
After finishing First Form Greek, the student will have mastered:
- The six indicative active tenses of the omega verb
- Present tense of the to be verb
- Two noun declensions
- First & second declension adjectives
- Personal & demonstrative pronouns
- Approximately 130 vocabulary words
Memoria Press’s First Form Greek is a wonderful extension of their Language Series. They do recommend that students first complete First and Second Form Latin to have the best understanding of grammar concepts. If entering directly into Greek, it is recommended to complete the Greek Alphabet Book for exposure to the alphabet and diacritical marks, and it is expected that students will take a slower pace through the first few lessons as they learn concepts. Concepts mastered by the end of First Form Greek include:
- The six indicative active tenses of the omega verb
- Present tense of the to be verb
- Two noun declensions
- First & second declension adjectives
- Personal & demonstrative pronouns
- Approximately 130 Greek vocabulary words
Students will spend approximately 30-40 minutes per lesson, 5 days a week, and parents are equipped to be as involved as they desire in the course. There is an Errata Sheet provided for this course, updated by Memoria Press. ~Rebecca
