The revised 5th edition includes twelve units that contain carefully selected classics representing writers from over thirty countries. World Literature intends to increase the student’s appreciation for literature and reading, while also helping to build an understanding of literary genres and techniques. Students will practice interpreting literature through a biblical lens. Critical thinking skills are built through answering thought-provoking worldview and literature-related questions. Students will also practice interpreting symbols and themes in visual art with a Spotlight on Visual Literacy feature. Poetry memorization continues in this grade. Students are also encouraged to memorize select poems.
Scope and sequence: Introduction to literary terms and forms, such as short stories; narrative poetry; plot; imagery and figurative language; theme; rhyme and rhythm; sonnet; ethos; pathos; logos; logical fallacies; paradox; setting; point of view; tone. Spotlight on Visual Literacy introduces art appreciation with pictures and analysis. Selections will be taken from authors such as Homer, Aesop, Tolstoy, Foxe, Milton, Burke, Plato, Basho, Ovid, Mansfield, Aristotle, Lagerlof, Rostand, Equiano. Complete novel: The Scarlet Pimpernel. Some selections have been slightly edited to ensure that the work is appropriate for this level of study. Adjustments have been kept to a minimum, and care has been taken that none of the edits change the meaning of the story or the intention of the writer.
