Description

My First Letters and Sounds by Generations is an open and go phonics program that is biblically focused, appealing to the student, and easy to teach!  This 25-week course teaches letter recognition and sounds, short vowel words, and some consonant blends and digraphs. A new letter is introduced in each lesson through week seven, then the next six weeks focus on letter sounds. The rest of the lessons teach short vowels, vowel blends, consonant blends, and digraph blends.

Some activities include coloring or circling the correct letter or picture that begin with a specific sound or blend, cutting out pictures and pasting them to the correct word, matching words with pictures, and writing the correct letter of a beginning sound or blend in a picture. Beginning in lesson 45, many of the lessons include a Bible verse and students trace or write certain words in the verse that tie into the phonics concept for that lesson. There is some practice with tracing letters and words, but you will want to add a separate handwriting program.

Lessons usually take about 10-15 minutes to complete. One lesson a day is recommended unless your child is ready for a faster pace (then 2 lessons can be completed). Since there is not a lot of reading practice included, you might consider using Bob Books, Short & Long Vowel Stories Series, or My Beginning Readers. After finishing the course, children should have a good grasp on phonics concepts and be able to move into a first-grade phonics program. Pages are perforated for easy tear out. 280 pgs, pb. ~ Gina

Publisher's Description of My First Letters and Sounds: Level K

Why do we teach children to read?

First and foremost, so they can read God’s Word. To get your children started reading, this is the resource you need.

My First Letters and Sounds is an engaging workbook to introduce children to the rudiments of letters and sounds in the English language. This workbook is intended for children ages 4-6 (Level K). Fundamental concepts such as vowels, digraphs, and consonants are taught. Vowel blends and short words are also included.

Additionally, children will learn how to use a pencil, how to color, and how to use scissors. Since learning to read the Bible is the first aim of reading, Scripture is frequently used throughout this workbook. By the end of this workbook, children will have a foundational knowledge of basic phonetic concepts. Children will be prepared to advance to a first-grade phonics and grammar curriculum.

The book consists of 125 lessons (completed in one school year). Each lesson should generally take 10-15 minutes to complete.

Parent involvement is highly encouraged.

Category Description for Generations Phonics

Generations Phonics is a two-volume set designed to be used as a first-grade reading curriculum. Having a biblical focus, as fundamental reading skills are being taught, children are also training their minds and hearts through scripture reading. Lessons review letter sounds, short vowels, and blends and teach more advanced phonics skills. Besides teaching phonics, the course also covers some elements of grammar, spelling, and composition including nouns, verbs, punctuation marks, syllables, rhyming words, and antonyms/synonyms. Each consumable volume includes straightforward instruction and activities all in one book – there is no separate teacher guide. A list of Dolch sight words for pre-primer, primer, and first grade are in front of each book. A kindergarten student who is ready to read could also start in this level or parents could move at a faster pace with a first grader. By the end of Generations Phonics, students are ready for a second-grade reading/phonics program.

The 180 lessons usually take about 15 to 20 minutes a day to complete. Students complete around 2-4 workbook pages each lesson. Some workbook activities include circling or coloring pictures that begin with a specific letter, fun challenges to practice reading faster, matching each sentence to the correct picture, practice with reading words, short sentences, and short stories, and drawing a picture to show what the story was about. You can create your own flashcards when sight words or new phonics concepts and rules are introduced to help review and solidify concepts. In Volume 1, optional handwriting practice appears at the end of most lessons, but there is no handwriting instruction.

Beginning in Volume 2, the Generations reading program for first grade, God’s Big Story, is incorporated into the lessons. Each lesson will give instructions on what chapter to read in God’s Big Story and what pages to complete in the activity book.

If you are looking for a phonics program that is thorough yet easy to teach, engaging, and focuses on the Word of God, Generations Phonics is a great option! ~ Gina
