Category Description for Grade 5 (Purposeful Design 3rd Ed)

While incorporating proven standards using the National Science Education Standards (NSES) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Purposeful Design Science also integrates a strong biblical worldview throughout this course. Using an inquiry-based, hands-on approach, students learn to observe, classify, predict, infer, and communicate. Students also answer questions like, “What is my purpose in life?”, “How do I evaluate what is true?”, “What effect does sin have on the world?”, and “What does God promise?”

The new third edition includes challenging, research-based instruction, charted NSES and NGSS standards, and performance-based assessments in every chapter. Differentiated instruction ideas and cross-curricular activities are also included. The five units cover: Foundations, Life Science, Physical Science, Earth and Space Science, and Human Body.

Components include Teacher Guide, hardcover Student Text, and a Science Workbook. The Teacher Guide has detailed lesson plans, sidebars with helpful information to stay organized, reduced student text & workbook pages (with answers), downloadable teacher resources (including tests), and more. Labs are integrated into the lesson plans, and materials include mostly household items. Each chapter in the full-color, hardcover Student Text begins with the “key ideas” and focused vocabulary words followed by the lessons. Vocabulary words are highlighted in yellow throughout the text. Chapters also include content and worldview objectives, strange but true facts, and career connections. Chapters contain about eight lessons. The consumable, full-color Student Workbook has about two activity pages to go along with each lesson. Some work pages are completed with lab activities. The last activity for every chapter in the workbook ends with vocabulary review and a study guide to complete.

If you desire a science curriculum that is inquiry based with hands-on labs, teaches from a Christian worldview, follows the science standards, and is grade leveled, this program is worth a look. ~ Gina
