Product Description:

Every level's Student Edition is a workbook and each lesson is two pages. Graphics are black and white with an accent color and offer a worked example when a new concept is presented. Problem-solving lessons allow an opportunity for students to apply the skills they have learned, and Chapter Challenge pages provide practice of new skills. "It's Algebra" pages are lessons that will help in preparation for algebra. Chapter tests are found at the end of every chapter; and to help keep skills sharp, cumulative assessments are included at the end of every chapter in grades 1-6. Each two-page lesson covers one main objective or concept and offers a visual model and practice. Both workbook pages are used with direct instruction by the parent/teacher as they explain the model or process and identify symbols to teach the lesson. As the levels progress (1-6), the student editions include more instruction, but there will always be the direct instruction component for use with the first page of each lesson, found in the teacher edition. The second page for levels 1-6 are for practice of the concept.

Category Description for MCP Mathematics (2005 Edition):

MCP Math has been around for many years with the latest revision in 2005 (pre-common core): solid program with a good balance of math mechanics and math reasoning, at an affordable price. MCP uses a research-based approach that incorporates direct instruction, guided practice, and independent practice for mastery of the concepts. Students then apply the learned concepts using problem-solving strategies.

At the kindergarten level, instruction and stories are found in the teacher edition, so it is required to complete the student pages. Minimal instruction is found at the bottom of each page for completion, but there is no lesson content in the student workbook. You will also find calculator lessons in grades 3-6, for incorporating technology and the concepts learned.

Teacher Editions are packed full of useful information and guidance. The front of each book is an uncomplicated explanation for how to use both the student and teacher books. An explanation of the four-step lesson plan (used in this series) and assessments is also included, along with a scope and sequence for grades K through 6. The teacher edition includes small format student pages with answers and the four-step lesson plan printed in the margins of the pages. The four-step lesson plan includes: 1) Getting Started; 2) Teach; 3) Practice; 4) Assess. "Getting Started" includes objectives, vocabulary, materials, a mental math warm up (I love this), and pencil and paper warm up. "Teach" is where the concept or skill is being taught and may use some manipulatives or items from around your home, but they aren't required. "Practice" is using the pages of the lesson in the student workbook and working through the beginning of each in a guided fashion then having the student finish independently. This section may also include some fun hands-on type activities for reinforcement. "Assess" is a variety of opportunities to informally assess the student's grasp of the concept. Also, included in the teacher notes are suggestions for teaching students with mixed abilities, extension activities, and enrichment. Some suggestions may be for a group or classroom setting, so you may have to adapt. Alternate tests for each chapter are found in the back of the teacher edition, and the kindergarten level even includes additional reproducibles.

Homeschool Bundles are available for this program, which include the student edition, teacher edition, and parent guide at a slightly lower price. The Parent Guide included in the Homeschool Bundles is a brochure that lists the bundle contents, gives an overview of the curriculum, how to use the materials, lesson preparation, and suggestions for adapting the curriculum to fit you and your student.

I have always been a fan of this curriculum with its constant review and incorporation of good math thinking skills. For those who don't want math curriculum that has been rewritten to align to common core standards, MCP is a solid math choice. ~ Donna

I find other math books too cluttered and busy. This has just enough visuals but not too much so kids can't even focus.

I've been looking for an easy to understand math program for our autistic son and have heard good things about MCP Math.

We have used many math programs but after 9 year off homeschooling have settled on MCP for all grade levels. It is the most straightforward, not overwhelming, requires only a reasonable amount of teacher prep, and just the right amount of cumulative assessment.

Is this a workbook or textbook?
A shopper on May 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is a workbook that has everything the kids need to do the lesson. There is no separate text, though the teachers edition cam be helpful with how to present the lesson and other mental math exercises to do with them. Hope that helps!

Affordable, simple, easy-to-teach math program that gets the job done
I chose this math program for simplicity and affordability. I have currently used the books for grades K through 2nd grade and will continue with 3rd grade. So far I have only used the student book and have not needed the teacher's manual. This curriculum reminds me strongly of how I was thought math at my small public school in the 90s, and that is why I felt comfortable trying it with my own kids as we homeschool. (Math went well for me during my school years). So far the concepts have been easy enough for me to explain or teach without the teacher's manual and the student workbooks provide plenty of exercises to practice and master concepts. These books are not frilly but are simple and still attractive. I like that my kids don't get distracted by tons of images and lots of color. My opinion is that math is a pretty black and white subject - it doesn't need to be complicated and simplicity is best. MCP math books lend to that very well. And, I love the price! I will continue using this curriculum.

It is not initially clear that this workbook is not aligned with common core standards. If you are life homeschooling it may not matter to you. But those who are temporarily homeschooling through the pandemic are looking for curriculum that will aid in their children returning to the traditional school system. I’m making due with the book. But I wish I had known up front.

Excellent elementary math curriculum
I have a degree in Mathematics and teach high school level math (Algebra 1 through pre-calc) at two private schools in an area that has a high number of homeschoolers. Thus I teach mainly kids that started out their journeys with homeschooling. Don’t get me wring; I love homeschooling and have homeschooled my own kids. What I have found is that those who do not use a good solid math curriculum really struggle in high school. MCP math level K through 4th grade (level D) is my go to elementary math curriculum. It builds a solid foundation.

Kindergartener Using this book
After looking through online reviews and forums, this is the book I selected for my kindergartener. It is great for those just starting to add and subtract. My child breezed through the beginning and then got stuck for a short while, but because the lesson didn't switch to a new concept right away, but continued, she was able to finally get it and is now moving on again. (Having her use some counting blocks or a 100-bead abacus really helped get back to moving through the lessons.) I think this is part of the reason why I like this style of learning, especially with those just starting school. Also, I didn't order the teacher's manual initially because I didn't think I would need it to teach kindergarten math, I was wrong, it helped me significantly with teaching the material at a level with which a beginning student can understand, so my advice would be to order the teacher's manual at the same time, it made teaching my kindergartener so much easier. Overall, good curriculum and I would definitely recommend!

I really like this math program It's easy to teach as it has a comprehensive Teacher's Manual and the program is sequential mastery The Teacher's Manual although made for classroom use is excellent and easy to adapt to a homeschooling situation The TM has the following elements to it: Getting Started Teach Practice and Assess It also includes Common Errors- Enrichment exercises and Intervention for students who don't quite grasp the concept yet More to Explore provides more practice in logic statistics number sense measurement and problem solving I imagine these exercises are geared towards gifted students who need more than the standard program providesGetting Started includes Objectives Materials Warm Up - Mental Math and Warm Up - Number SenseBesides explaining exactly how to present the lesson which is so helpful to people who are not well-versed in Math the Assess section has one defining problem to gauge where the student is in comprehension Some people may find that there are often too many problems for the student in his workbook but that can be solved by just breaking it up or skipping for another time I find that with this program I don't need additional drill It's built-in which I like This program could be used as a stand-alone program It's straight-forward no frills affordable only uses two colors so as not to be distracting and its main strength is its lesson presentation and Teacher's Manual That said at least in the First and Second grades we're using MCP with Miquon just to present math from a different angle
