Category Description for Saxon K-3 Program:

The Teacher's Manual contains the actual lesson plans and information vital to the effective presentation of math concepts. The consumable Meeting Books are used during the teacher-student "meeting" in which concepts are introduced, demonstrated and practiced. If teaching more than one student at the same level, you will only need one meeting book. Consumable Student Workbooks are used in grades 1-3 only and contain student materials, flash cards and practice pages. The Math K Home Study Kit contains teacher edition and meeting book. Math 1, 2, and 3 kits contain teacher edition, meeting book, and a set of 2 workbooks. Manipulatives are a vital, integral part of the program; these are not included in the Home Study Kits, but are available through us also.

Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

Have tried other math workbooks. Saxon is most thorough and easy to teach. Teaching new lessons is a breeze because they are written word for word. And it spirals so that they don't lose skills. Recommend for all grade levels

I've used the Saxon high school curriculum to teach my homeschooled students for over 20 years. I'm now teaching a teenage Ukrainian refugee who has no basic math skills, so of course I turned to John Saxon once again!

I used Saxon K for my pre-schooler and it was a perfect fit for her age. So we are continuing on with Math 1 since the Kindergarten had such an easy to follow script and direction.
Renee M on Sep 2, 2021
I chose Saxon math, because I believe the teaching style is set up very well. I was homeschooled and we went through many different curriculums, but Saxon math was a keeper. My 12 year old was struggling with math for years and we switched to Saxon math a few months ago and he is thriving! I was not exposed to Saxon Math 1, but I figured the investment would be worth it.

I have used Saxon with my older children and am using 1st grade for the 1st time with my youngest. Overall, I like the spiral approach, because of the repetition. If a student wants to work heavily with manipulatives, they can can be used more if desired, to help a student cement concepts. If a student is progressing without them, this text will support that completely. I like that there is plenty of math problems available for practice if my child needs the extra work.

How many lessons are in part one?
A shopper on Sep 21, 2022
BEST ANSWER: There are 130 lessons in the course and they are in 2 fairly equal semesters.
What edition is this kit?
Daisy on Oct 27, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I believe it is a first edition. The copyright date is 2001.
How would you compare this to horizon?
A shopper on Jan 20, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The teacher instructions on Saxon are thorough and easy to follow Horizon is not as thorough, Saxon independent student work is not enough Horizon’s Independent student work is three times as much.
I have the home study kit but cannot find the oral assessment recording forms. Where are they located?
A shopper on Sep 25, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The oral assessment recording forms are located in the Student workbook part 1. There is a letter to the teacher, Homework recording form, assessment recording form, and then follows the oral assessment recording forms.
How long does each lesson typically take for Saxon Math 1?
A shopper on Jul 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It varies by lesson, but my best estimate would be 45 minutes. That will depend on how much of the intro "meeting" work you do each day. For most (not all) of the "meeting" items each day, the lesson, the timed math fact sheet, and the double sided worksheet I’d estimate 45 uninterrupted minutes. Though, obviously, it’s rarely uninterrupted!
What edition is this?
A shopper on Jun 25, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The is the first edition of Saxon Math 1. The copyright is 2001.
Have the Saxon math homeschool editions been aligned to common core?
A shopper on Mar 17, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The K-3 Saxon Math Homeschool Editions have copyrights in the early 90s which was long before Common Core. They have not been updated to align. There are some editions (most notably the Math Intermediate Series and the Courses 1, 2, & 3) that are topically aligned to CCSS. Even these later, CCSS aligned editions do not depart from the solid Saxon methodology and the excellent math instruction.
What manipulative kit goes with Saxon 1 through Saxon 3? I would like to not have to purchase an additional kit later on. Thanks!
Shantel on Jan 31, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have used Saxon K through Saxon 2. Manipulatives are used more heavily in Saxon K, understandably, than the other grades. However, those we continue to use in Saxon 1 are linking cubes (set of 100-in 10 colors), pattern blocks (we have the Melissa and Doug Pattern Block Kit with the magnetic wipe board), a simple analog clock that the child can easily set, and a geoboard with rubber bands (we have a double-sided board with a square pattern on one side and an equilateral triangle pattern on the other side).
Where are the Master pages for Math 1? I only see Master pages located in the Student Workbook starting at 1-19A but it has already started requesting them to be used in the second lesson (Master 1-2)?? I'm so confused as to where the Masters pages might be. Please help!! Thank you :)
A shopper on Sep 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: they are throughout the kids workbook, in the teachers manual it informs you on that lesson and you will find it for that lesson.
Does Saxon Math 1 match up to first grade?
Holli B on Jul 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It will depend on the standards/curriculum you are comparing it to. Saxon in the primary grades is slower paced than many programs found currently in the public schools or that we carry.
Does this have a 2002 re-printing date inside the front cover? Looking to match my TE with the workbooks.
A shopper on Aug 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The TEs in our Homeschool Kits have a 1994 copyright date. A re-printing date is inconsequential because there will have been no major changes with just a re-printing.
Is this the third edition?
A shopper on Jun 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, we carry the 1st edition of Saxon Math grades K-3.
what is the meeting book?
A shopper on Apr 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The meeting book is like your child's own personal calendar, only they learn how to fill in the date every day. At the beginning of each lesson in the teachers manual there is a section called "The Meeting" that teaches calendar, weather graph, and counting, and as you teach this section, your student follows along and uses the meeting book. Sometimes, if we've missed a few days, I still make my boys fill in the missing dates and we talk about those dates and what we might've done on those days, so they can see the progression of time.
Does this include everything I will need to teach first grade math? What will I need to purchase extra when I teach it again to my next child?
A shopper on Mar 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, in order to do all of the activities and lessons in the Saxon books, you will also need the manipulative kit. The kit has all the 1-inch square blocks, scale, tangrams, geoboard, etc... that you will use in Saxon 1. You need that in addition to the teacher's book and student workbooks. You will either need to photocopy the student workbooks so you can reuse it with your next child or purchase another set of workbooks when you need them for your next student. (Personally I bought the manipulative kit that works for Saxon K-3, so I got all the items needed for all the math books through Saxon 3.)
i do not need meeting book can i buy it without the meeting book?
A shopper on Feb 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The kit is only available with the meeting book but you can purchase the teacher edition and the workbooks by themselves.

Fun and Challenging
I am very happy with Saxon Math for my first grader. I pulled him out of public school because he was doing MINIMAL learning in such LONG hours and he was bored to death. With Saxon, he is being challenged and he REALLY enjoys using the manipulatives and doing the daily lessons. I couldn't be happier!!

Our favorite math program!
Great package. Easy to use. We’ve tried a lot of math programs in this family and Saxon is the only one that has some repetition to help them retain the math. With all of the others a topic would need to be completely retaught when we circled back the following year.

The Incremental spiral is so helpful for helping my right brain learners (dyslexic) retain information. The meeting can be tedious but is so important! Skip counting made a world of difference for multiplication and division.

Straightforward, comprehensive, and FUN!
This product revolutionized my homeschool in the absolute best way! I love Saxon and so does my student! It is SO EASY for the parent to use and it is comprehensive. Gone are my worries that we might “miss something” or “fall behind.” There are no tricks or gimmicks with this product; it is very straightforward. It has been great to see my student’s progress and enthusiasm (we both live math time now!) since we have been using this product. I recommend it to everyone I know!
