An economical way to bring Cuisenaire Rods into the classroom, this package contains 155 wooden rods and Activity Guide in a storage bucket. Math is not just numbers! Using Cuisenaire rods, Miquon Math Labs allows children to model numbers and operations concretely. It uses a hands-on, pattern-building, discovery method that fosters independence and creativity in problem solving. The unique page-numbering format of the program allows for flexibility - use each book straight through, covering a variety of topics, or use only the pages in each book relating to a specific topic (easily identified by the alpha-numeric page numbering system).

Instead of holding off on more difficult math topics until later grades, the Miquon approach is unique in teaching all four basic math operations in Grade 1 - plus fractions, clock arithmetic, area, volume and factoring. This builds confidence in children as they see how the basic operations are intterrelated and takes the "mystery" out of these otherwise-delayed topics. By Grade 3, children understand different base systems and graph algebraic equations!

These are not typical workbooks that test what a child already has learned, but lab sheets - teaching pages. Children are shown that, while there is only one correct solution, there are different ways to arrive at it, and it encourages them to develop their own techniques. The "standard" approach is not always the best. For example, which is easier, to teach borrowing and carrying for a problem like 400 - 298 or to teach the the child to restate the problem as 398 - 298 + 2 or 400 - 300 + 2? Techniques like these really help to develop mental dexterity in problme solving. After using Miquon with our seven children, we can attest that this program has promoted flexibility in problem solving and teaches them to find the best technique for the situation. Ours students now tackle new or difficult problems creatively, even fearlessly!

Altogether, the six student workbooks contain over 650 lab sheets. Concepts covered include: counting, odd-even, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, equalities, place value, number line and functions, factoring, squaring, simultaneous equations, graphing equations, geometric recognition, length, area, volume, series and progressions, grid and arrow games, mapping, clock arithmetic, sets, and word problems.

We recommend purchasing the Lab Sheet Annotations. This is the teacher's guide for all six workbooks. Because the approach taken in the program is so different, it explains the reasoning behind the presentation and provides several suggestions on how to present each topic. It also provides preliminary activities for a concrete understanding of the math concepts as well as more detailed explanations for many of the workbook pages. While answers are supplied for some of the more "tricky" sheets, most worksheets are shown sans answers, so take the time to fill in the answers as you correct work for your first Miquon student - then you'll have a completed key to use with the next!

The Miquon Math program would be an excellent start in math to move into any other program, but it would lend itself particularly well to those intending to use the Singapore approach to math in the future.

(We later moved away from Saxon to use Teaching Textbooks and Art of Problem Solving instead). I believe the pattern blocks and Cuisenaire rods were vital to their development of intuitive math skills. They all grew into adults with a good grasp of math. Once students have mastered the concept of fraction using other manipulatives, I like to switch to Cuisenaire rods to help them develop a keener sense of number. Cuisenaire rods are not marked with an "amount" and students need to refine this as they visually try to decide which rods they need to use to solve a problem.

These are, hands-down, the BEST math manipulative you can get! I am buying these for a small school I work at. They can be used to teach addition, subtraction, multiplication, division (including long division), fractions, GCF, LCM, and more. We use them with Miquon Math, Education Unboxed videos, and just whatever math curriculum we are currently using.

I find Cuisenaire rods help a child to have a visual/mental image of measurement using the metric system. They are very useful in the same way for the various math concepts of addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, and beyond.

I used them years ago when homeschooling my daughter as I had a distant memory of liking the series the one year I had encountered it in elementary school. They help you understand math much better because it 'explains' the 'why' not just the 'how.'

Versatile and helpful math manipulative
I love the feel and sound of the wooden rods so much more than the plastic ones. Beyond that, and the real reason I bought this bigger set, is that it allows the student to work with the rods to understand so many math concepts in a concrete way. I have used them with my kindergartener to introduce all operations (except division), fractions, odd-even numbers, number relationships, making “tens”, and making “hundreds”. I know they will continue to be useful for a few more years. I own a smaller set, but the larger set will help when learning to work with tens in addition and subtraction. Plus I have some extras now for the younger kids to play with during lesson time.

Love this manipulative
We have used many manipulatives including household items but the ability to use these as something other than counting by "1's" is fantastic. Necessary for the Miquon series and have also found them useful for counting by 2's, 5's, even keeping score in games. Quality is nice and a fair quantity for the 2 children I have using them.

We use the Cuisenaire rods and Miquon Math as a supplement to CLE math. My 6 yr DD loves it. It makes math time fun! It has been less than a month since we started using them and she is already showing improvements in her understanding of math concepts.
