Publisher Description:

Science in the Scientific Revolution is the third book in a hands-on, multilevel elementary science series that introduces scientific concepts using history as its guide. It covers the scientific works of natural philosophers from 1543 to the end of the 1600s.

Because the course covers science as it was developed, it discusses a wide range of topics including astronomy, human anatomy, medicine, botany, zoology, heliocentrism, geocentrism, gases, pressure, electricity, fossils, microbiology, binary numbers, gravity, conservation laws, and the laws of motion. Throughout the course, the student learns that most of the great natural philosophers who lived during this time were devout Christians who were studying the world around them to learn more about the nature of God.

Category Description for Science in History by Dr. Jay Wile:

After much speculation and anticipation, Dr. Jay Wiles new elementary science curriculum is now available, and dare I say, it has been worth the wait! For those unaware, Dr. Jay Wile is the author of the Jr. and Sr. High Apologia Science curriculum which was specifically designed for homeschool family use, and he continues in the same vein with his newest courses.

Designed to be used every other day, each of the curriculum courses provides one year’s worth of science instruction. Each book is divided into six sections that include twelve foundational lessons and three challenge lessons, for a total of 90 lessons. While the challenge lessons may be considered optional if you have a science-resistant child, you will find they add depth and enjoyment to the subject being studied and provide excellent extension activities for older or gifted students.

Designed with the belief that children of elementary age can learn together, each lesson includes a hands-on activity or experiment (parental supervision required), approximately three pages of reading, and review questions at three levels of difficulty. The hands-on activities or experiments primarily use commonly found household items, although lab kits are available. Supply lists by unit are conveniently located in the front of the textbooks, making it easy to secure items ahead of time.

While the hardcover Text contains all of the instruction, the author has provided parents with a “Helps & Hints” softcover book which offers experiment and activity notes, answers to all three levels of questions, and optional tests/answers for those who want to incorporate assessments (reproducible for family use). The author recommends students keep notebooks of activities/experiments and lesson questions to evaluate learning. Some reproducible activity templates are included to facilitate this.

The first course, Science in the Beginning, teaches science topics as they relate to the six days of creation. Here is an example of the questions and how the level of difficulty increases. From Lesson 9, Day 1 of Creation:

“Younger Students: Where does your eye’s lens focus the light that passes through it? What do the rods and the cones do in the eye? Older Students: Make your own drawing of the eye, based on the one you see on pg. 25. Label the cornea, lens, retina, and optic nerve. Make a note that the rods and cones can be found on the retina. Also, point out in the drawing where the blind spot is, and explain why it is a blind spot. Oldest Students: Do what the older students are doing. In addition, I want you to predict what would happen if I changed the instructions in the experiment. Suppose I asked you to hold the book so the red squares are just to the left of your nose. Then, suppose I told you to close your right eye and look at the red and blue circles with your left eye. Then, suppose I asked you to bring the book closer and closer to your face. Can you predict what you would eventually see? Write down your predication and then see if it was correct by actually doing the experiment that way.”

At this point, you may wonder how this compares to the Elementary Apologia curriculum. At first glance, the main difference is with the scope of topics. Dr. Jay’s new series provides students with exposure to multiple branches of science within the course of a year. Elementary Apologia takes one topic and studies it in-depth over the course of one year. Parents who have used the Jr. and Sr. High Apologia texts will find this new series is similar to the upper level Apologia texts, with lessons written in a friendly conversational tone, step-by-step experiment instructions and lesson reviews. Full-color graphics are plentiful but not as bountiful as in the Apologia elementary books. Also noteworthy is that each lesson in this book contains three pages of textual reading, which is less than the average daily readings in the elementary Apologia courses. Dr. Jay Wile’s excellent elementary series could ease the transition to the Apologia Jr. High Curriculum for a middle school student who is using a different program.

Texts are available separately as are the Helps & Hints. Sets include both the hardcover Textbook and Helps & Hints softcover book. Dr. Jay anticipates the release of other books in this series. Check our website or call to check availability or upcoming titles. ~ Deanne

Science that is easy to implement, gets done, and explains the science behind the experiments very clearly
Christine R on Aug 23, 2020
This is the next book in our science sequence. I chose this curriculum because the lessons are short and each contain an experiment to illustrate the concepts. Most experiments don't require special tools, just common household objects. For early elementary, I like that it jumps around various topics, constantly exposing different fields of study. It doesn't go very deep, but does include proper scientific terms and is a great introduction to various topics.
Sandra R on May 27, 2020
Excellent set! This is the third of six an we are excited to continue with these engaging, hands on lessons.
Joelle B on May 19, 2020
Best science curriculum ever! We love the Berean Builders series. My kids have so much fun with the experiments and they're learning a lot of important science concepts in the process. Plus, I can do science with all my kids at the same time and adjust the questions to each one's level of understanding. It saves time and money.

We did Science in the Beginning from the Berean Builders series last year, and I couldn't get over how much the simple experiments served to solidify the concepts for each of us -- mom included! My son regularly asked to repeat experiments, even months later, and because most of the experiments could be done by the kids with materials we already had around the house, they were often able to do so independently. I have and will continue to recommend this series to friends.

Do these books get increasingly more difficult or can you jump in at any point in the series?
A shopper on Jul 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: In my opinion, each book is independent in the series. What connects the different books together is the study of different scientists during different time periods. For example, Science in the Scientific Revolution covers scientists from the ~1400s to the ~1700, chronologically. The next book Sicience in the Age of Reason covers ~1600s to ~1800s. You can jump in at any point of the series with no problem. It is best if you can match with the period at which your history curriculum is in.

The BEST science curriculum for elementary grades, hands down
My kids love the hands-on experiments. I love the ease and how rigorous it is. They're learning science concepts I didn't see until high school. It's at a more basic level, of course, but they're seeing how the universe works and they're getting it. No cutesy stuff or busy work. Just real science. Plus, it's way less expensive and far better than the big name curriculums.

Thorough science curriculum
Though the curriculum is advertised as being geared for K5-6th grades, I believe a better fit is possibly upper elementary -if they're more advanced, to middle school, and even early high school. Of course, this would not likely meet the credits needed at the high school level. So middle school is a great age for this curriculum. I like the chronological approach with this series; something most of us most likely didn't experience in our own traditional schooling. There are experiments with each lesson, which are relatively easy to perform, and the materials are typically items you already have on hand. However, most of the lessons revolve around these experiments so it leaves little opportunity to skip over. So on the one hand, if you've ever felt somewhat guilty that you haven't been doing experiments, this will compel you. On the other hand, your hand is somewhat forced to do the experiments, which can be frustrating. The material covered in the series is rich, and thorough, and the layout and graphics are nice, and the lessons aren't too long. Dr. Wile explains things relatively clearly, and the format is more conversational. In my personal opinion, I do find his writing redundant, and feel it could have gone through another round of editing to firm it up. Overall, I would recommend this curriculum.

This is our third year using, BB and it has been so enjoyable! The historical and biblical aspect really blend well with our other subjects. My son will spout off very "scientific" references occasionally, so I am certain the presentation of new concepts are sticking.

Another Winning Text in this Series!!
We recently finished the 3rd book in Dr. Jay L. Wile's chronological study of elementary science curriculum, entitled, Science in the Scientific Revolution. Our 3rd, 5th and 6th grade children thoroughly enjoyed learning about the scientific findings of the 1500's to the end of the 1600's. We met some of the well known scientists from that age such as Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton, as well as some not so well known but equally influential scientists. As any good natural philosopher would do, we studied concepts that focused on the human body, planets, and laws that govern our universe, to name a few. Being a no nonsense type of educator and mother of 10, I have to admit fun is not my top priority in choosing a science curriculum. However, I can attest that the fun experiments included in each of the 90 lessons showcases the author's objectives remarkably well. I believe the chronological study along with the memorable experiments combined with the age appropriate objective questions at the end of each lesson, engages and cements the concepts for our children. I was surprised to find how much my children did retain even from prior years when Dr. Wile would refer to his other volumes.
We are already looking forward to continuing our chronological study of science with Dr. Wile's next textbook of this series, Science in the Age of Reason.

I bought this science book for my 2nd and 6th grader. I like that it has different levels of work for different age levels and that it is for a certain time period in history. It goes along with the time period we are studying in history so they are able to make more connections between them, therefore able to retain more of the information. The experiments are easy to do and most of the things they require you already have at home. If it does require something that you normally wouldn't have it gives you a list of them beforehand so you can be prepared. Looking forward to continuing with this science curriculum!
