Category Description for BJU Press Heritage Studies:

This complete social studies curriculum assumes a strong Christian worldview that is meaningful and relevant in today’s world. It reflects a conservative evangelical perspective and would be a good choice for many Christians because of its Godly perspective. Heritage Studies uses a narrative approach making the books more interesting and provides a look at how God has interacted with human events to establish His kingdom, and give students an opportunity to study historical figures and events through the lens of God’s Word. In addition to the historical aspect of Heritage Studies, students are invited to evaluate concepts, cultural values, economic issues, and government systems using Scripture. By teaching the past, students become aware of the present and are better able to understand and think critically about issues they will face. Heritage Studies strives to present a balanced view of history and challenges students to think for themselves.

Many of the texts have been updated and revised in recent years. Student Texts are colorful and non-consumable. Teacher Editions are full of resources (these will vary between editions), and usually include reduced student pages, teaching tips, background and supplemental information, and answer keys. Newer editions also include a Toolkit CD, which includes maps, visuals, instructional aids, Activity Manual Answer Keys (in some cases), and more. Activity Manuals include full-color pages to review and enrich lessons. Activity Manual Answer Keys are student activity manual pages with answers filled in – in some cases the Activity Manual answers are found in the teacher edition for that level.  Tests are non-reproducible and come in a packet with one test per chapter; Tests Answer Keys are student tests with the answers filled in. A Visuals Packet is available for grade 1 (optional) and includes a timeline, maps, pictures, interactive figures, and full-color charts. Home School Kits include the required materials for teaching Heritage Studies at each grade level, and usually includes a Student Text, Teacher Edition, Activity Manual, Activity Manual Answer Key (where needed), Tests, and Tests Answer Keys.

Wonderful program!
This is our first time using anything from BJU. We are really liking it. My daughter can pretty much do it on her own and she says history is now her favorite subject. I have six kids, and my fourth grader is the oldest, so we make the lessons pretty short and sweet. They involve me asking a question or two to review the previous lesson, and then she moves into her reading. Then she will do the workbook page(s) to go along with it. There is usually only one page to do per day, sometimes 2 to practice map work also. I will then ask her a few of the questions from the teacher book and we have a short discussion. The book does a great job of pointing to where people made the right decisions and where people chose wrongly. I appreciate that it doesn’t sugarcoat over wrong things that even “Christians” in the past did. The first lessons go over what it means to be just and then continues to reference back to that when approaching times people made unjust choices. I don’t think the textbook is “dry” at all, my daughter really enjoys it and has really learned a lot. Quite frankly, so have I. I do give her the tests to see if she is retaining what’s she’s reading and she has always gotten the answers correct. Overall, this would work very well for a parent who wants their child to do a lot of the work independently, but could also be a teacher taught program if you really wanted to be more involved. I think it’s flexible. The teacher guide was written so it can be quite open and go. I appreciate the full color there too. But again, the tools are also there so you could elaborate more on the lessons if desired.
