Solid English and Grammar curriculum. My kids all have a great knowledge of grammar and correct English usage from the Bob J books. My daughter used this curriculum all the way through 11th grade, and she had the highest ACT score in her class.

I've used the grade 3 book and thought it was thorough, so I am trying out this grade 5 for my other child. I think it's a good price for how much content there is, and the colorful aspect is a big plus for both my kids.

The Writing/Grammar 5 Worktext by BJU Press alternates grammar chapters with writing chapters. This arrangement allows students to utilize in their own writing the grammar concepts they have just learned.

I have used this series before and like the format. Each lesson has a guided practice section to be done with your child then an independent practice section that they are to do on their own. I also like the fact that writing assignments are integrated into the lessons.

Is this teacher intensive or can the student complete the workbook independently?

BEST ANSWER: I would say it depends on the student. the book does do the teaching on the first page of each lesson. They are supposed to do “guided practice” then the next page is similar practice. Some children can read and practice on their own. Others need a little coaching. Then as the parent you will need to review their work to make sure they are truly grasping the concepts. However, on the chapters with a writing assignment you should be more hands on since they break down the writing steps - if you wait to give them feedback or guidance at the end of the chapter you may find that they have to redo previous steps which would be frustrating for the child. Overall I think it is an excellent curriculum that guides the student a long very well. You can get by without any prep, but you should plan to work directly with the student for at least half the lessons.
Does this come with a CD? It doesn't mention lessons taught by a teacher on CD but I've seen it before. Thank you.

BEST ANSWER: Bob Jones offers a video class that uses this text. You don't have to watch the class videos to "do" the course. We don't carry the video courses - you will have to go directly to Bob Jones.

Colorful & Interesting
I haven't used the book yet, but me and my son flipped through it together and he liked the pictures, it is visually appealing. He for some reason gives me less of a hassle when things are in color.

love it
We have used a variety of things (and liked most of them) but felt that writing and grammar were something that weren't hit hard enough. This workbook is great, has a good balance between writing and sentence diagraming (without being overwhelming with either). Workbook assignments are just the right amount, even my son (who was not a fan of writing) is enjoying them. I have not been using the teacher guide (which I do own, but haven't had to refer to... at least not for 5th grade)
