Category Description for Telling God's Story Year 4 (Gr. 4):

Telling God’s Story Year 4 is subtitled The Story of God’s People Continues. The focus of this year’s course is the stories and events that happen after Jesus’ departure. Picking up with the gospel story and bridging into the events of Acts, the year continues with the following units:

  • Jesus Departs
  • The Holy Spirit
  • The Cost of Following Jesus
  • Being a New Creation in Christ
  • Who is Paul?
  • The Good News is for Everyone
  • The Life of the Church
  • After Death
  • Last Things
  • These Three Remain: Faith, Hope, and Love

Instructor text is 145 pgs. However, the Activity Book is only 133 pgs. and seems to have fewer activities with less variety. Both are paperback. All scripture references are from the NIV.

Category Description for Telling God's Story:

Telling God’s Story provides a roadmap for teaching the Bible – thoughtfully and thoroughly – to our children. The Parents’ Guide outlines this approach and could stand on its own but it also serves as an introduction to the four courses that target the elementary years. The curriculum will possibly be expanded in the future to include middle school and high school years. With the goal of knowing Jesus, the 36 weekly lessons in each of the first three years fall into nine categories:

  • Stories Jesus Told
  • Miracles Jesus Did
  • Teachings of Jesus
  • The Sermon on the Mount
  • Jesus’ Early Life
  • Jesus’ Disciples
  • Opposition to Jesus
  • End of Jesus’ Life
  • The Rest of the Story

These categories repeat each year with new material and more depth. You could basically call it parallel instruction. The fourth year, however, is different. The Year 4 course examines what happens when Jesus leaves. The study starts the story with His departure (from earth) and ends with the Second Coming. It’s basically a biblical look at the in-between times.

The basic structure of each course is the same. The Instructor Text & Teaching Guide provides an overview to the year. For each weekly lesson there is scripted text to be read aloud and discussed. In preparation, the teacher is encouraged to read through the background information and theological perspective (What the Parent Should Know) provided for each lesson.

The Student Guide and Activity Book provides a coloring page for each lesson as well as activity/project suggestions. There is a lot of variety in the activities and projects. These include crafts, games, music, cooking, and word searches. All coloring pages as well as any pages needed for activities or projects are reproducible for families. Teacher-student interaction is important in this series, but teacher prep is minimal. ~ Janice
