Description

Based on a real dog that served in WWII, this will be a hit with young dog lovers and history buffs. Judy is a proud British Navy dog aboard the HMS gunship Grasshopper. She works to keep those aboard the ship safe by alerting them of danger, comforting any passengers or crew members, and boosting the ship's morale. She has a good life aboard with her crew – until the Japanese sink her gunship. Eventually taken as Prisoners of War by the Japanese, the crew is sent to a labor camp where they are treated cruelly, worked to the bone, and fed little. Judy supports her men and does everything she can to protect them. She warns them of danger, distracts guards from beating them, and hunts for food to bring them. With the help of Frank, her closest human friend, she perseveres to get her men to the other side of the war alive. This story is based on the real Judy, who did in fact serve in the Royal Navy and see her men through POW camp. Told through the dog's eyes, this makes for an entertaining historically-based novel for young readers. 111 pgs, pb.
