This language arts series adapts Charlotte Mason ideas for the modern homeschool student, complete with character-building themes. Each quarter has five stories, two picture studies (one of which is Bible-based), and two poems (one of which is a Psalm). Using the spelling words and the Dictionary Worksheets, students will create their very own dictionary as they move week by week through the material.

Develops reading and narration skills as well as writing mastery of multisentence paragraphs.

Continuing with what the student has learned in Level 2, Book 3 will add to their reading, communication and observation skills. They will begin to write paragraphs. They will review and refine lessons from Level 2 in addition to learning new skills.

This curriculum incorporates picture study, memorization, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary, observation, poems, psalms, letters, and practical application through creative writing all working towards the mastery of reading and grammar, as well as the mechanics of communication and writing. Equivalent to a third grade level.

Self-described as Charlotte Mason-flavored, this language arts curriculum (with reading, grammar, vocabulary, composition and handwriting practice) pulses with a biblical emphasis (NASB). Learning activities are based in story/reading. In levels 2 through 5, students read a continuing story about friends Micah and Claire and their Sunday School experiences, and then they alternate with an age-appropriate literature selection. To select a level for your student, the general expectation is that the students’ skills should be comfortably at grade level (in reading, writing, and handwriting).

Each week follows a similar pattern of activities, with an included schedule. All levels encourage picture study, handwriting, Bible memorization, spelling (with creating a dictionary), progressively more challenging composition and reading tasks, and Just for Fun critical thinking activities. Quarterly checklist-type reviews of skills help monitor progress. These streamlined worktexts combine student and teacher material; you’ll find just-enough teacher direction highlighted throughout, additional direction in the front matter and in the Teachers Aid section (about 100 pgs.). This section includes such things as dictionary pages to copy, optional learning games, spelling practice ideas, copywork practice, and grammar study sheets. Recommended Master Books reading lists are included. Most levels require Favorite Stories from the Bible or other resources. Course includes a course assessment chart to record whether a child has mastered specific skills and a completion certificate. Bought this curriculum because I needed something different since we are expecting a baby this year and I need something more open and go than we usually use. We use a different spelling curriculum, but I am hoping we can use this as an intro to grammar and reading skills reinforcement until I can be more involved with our other curriculums.

I have been using this series for 2 years now. My elder son started with this book. I like how it has a weekly flow going through the different English concepts. I like how they incorporated the copy work. I feel they are weak on spelling if you have a poor speller. (My elder son is a poor speller. I use Daily Spelling Practice to help him with the rules and weird words.) My younger son started in level 1 and we are loving it. He is a stronger speller and the spelling seems to meet his needs.

My son made great progress through Book 2. His handwriting improved immensely, but there wasn't so much practice that it felt like a chore. Every day was something different, and the variety kept him engaged. I like that it's an all-in-one kind of curriculum, and of course it's God-honoring.

Maybe not enough practice
I have loved Masterbooks, however I am now finding the need to supplement to really solidify what is learned. As much as I love the shorter lessons/less book work… starting to wonder if it’s a good fit for my son.

A breath of fresh air
This curriculum from Master Books has been a good fit for our family. I really wanted to love another curriculum we were using, but it was so frustrating for the kids and myself because it assumes too much about the student's capabilities; a stage the publisher pushed, but an unrealistic expectation for their recommended grade level. I realized I was forcing my kids to meet someone else's standards; so much for the "gentle" approach *sigh*

Language Lessons for a Living Education is colorful, which captures the attention of most children who may not have sensory/focus issues. The lessons are brief, matching a kid's attention span. The presentations of new concepts are not convoluted or too vague. There is a spiral approach but the review isn't overwhelming. I did start my kids one level behind the recommended placement. I felt this would give them more review opportunity, build their confidence for the things they could master, and allow them to work independently when necessary. We will continue with the next level.

Works great for our literature based, relaxed homeschool
Gentle and easy way to cover some grammar instruction in our homeschool. We don't use the additional Bible story resource (we skip that part in the workbook and my children get copywork practice in other areas). My kids love the fun spelling word activities and the word groups are picked well, based on vowel sounds or common spelling combinations.
