Product Description:

Includes 2 Student workbooks (Part 1 and Part 2), colored pencils, and Instructor book. Level E is for the student who can spell many common words confidently but may not be ready for the more advanced content of the next level. Drawn from America's history and people, passages in this level increase gradually in reading difficulty. Resources include the Passages, an Answer Key, a Glossary, a Bibliography, and an Index of Topics.

Publisher Description:

The American Spirit Universal Set includes everything you need to continue to increase reading level in skill development stage of spelling with 36 weekly lessons (divided into five daily parts): the Instructor's Handbook with introduction to the philosophy of Spelling You See and a Getting Started guide, and a Student Pack with two Student Workbooks and a pack of erasable colored pencils. American Spirit includes short, interesting passages about various people and events from American history, with a gradually increasing reading level. At the same time, the emphasis on the mastery of everyday words continues, building a strong foundation for the next stage of spelling. Just as in the previous level, American Spirit utilizes the core activities of Spelling You See: chunking, providing hands-on experience with English's many irregular letter patterns; copywork, requiring the brain to pay attention to details in print; and dictation, giving an opportunity for student to demonstrate decoding and encoding in a meaningful context.

Category Description for Spelling You See:

Chunking, copywork, and dictation. Those three skills encapsulate the Spelling You See (SYS) program from Demme Learning (the Math-U-See people). To obtain "good spelling skills" means that correctly spelled words are locked in long term memory, ready to be plunked down into writing assignments and used in emails without the benefit of spell-checkers. Remembering letter patterns and using words in context provide the not-so-secret pathway to long-term spelling mastery. Spelling You See delivers a systematic and easy-to-use methodology for recognizing letter patterns and developing visual memory by the repetitious use of words in context.

The Spelling You See methodology employs chunking (identifying and color-marking the letter combinations) in a real-life informative passage to identify the spelling rules in words and then copywork (first) and dictation (follow-up) to solidify the word's visual picture and send it to long-term memory. It works! With SYS, you can totally avoid the learned-by-Friday, forgotten-by-Monday nature of weekly spelling list programs; there are no weekly spelling lists or tests.

Identifying five developmental stages of spelling, SYS then targets their levels to these stages. Stage I is Preliterate; students are learning about the printed page and the flow of reading material based on their literary environment. Stage II, Phonetic, is an auditory stage where students become able to distinguish the individual sounds that make up spoken words. Stage III, Skill Development, is learning effective ways to deal with the phonics exceptions. Repetition over several years is necessary at this stage. In Stage IV, Word Extension, the focus is on syllables, prefixes and suffixes. Lastly, Stage V, Derivational Constancy, looks for word root patterns.

Movement through these developmental stages is sequential as each stage builds on the previous one. Spelling stages do not necessarily correspond to reading levels - an excellent reader can still struggle with spelling. Developing a strong visual memory is the underlying skill set that is critical for progressing through the stages which also don't necessarily conform to grade levels. [Any grade level assignments noted on our listings is for the convenience of our customers and have not been assigned by the authors of the program.] The consistency and repetition of the SYS daily work builds visual memory. Please note the skills associated with each level to determine good placement for your student; placement guidelines are available from www.spellingyousee.com.

All levels have 36 weeks of lessons, each providing daily activities for five days. Course components include an Instructor Handbook plus a two-volume set of Student Workbooks (except Level A which has only a single Student Workbook).

The Instructor Handbooks include an introduction that reviews the SYS philosophy, outlines the five developmental stages, and provides curriculum sequence and placement guidelines. The rest of the book contains the specifics for that particular level. These include a Getting Started section, Lesson-by-Lesson Instructions, a Weekly Activity Guide, and a Frequently Asked Questions section that addresses random issues that may arise.

An Answer Key for each level is included in the back of the Instructor's Handbook. These answer keys are full-color and show the highlighting and underlining (in appropriate colors) that the student is being asked to do (which also simplifies the grading process). Each level has an online page with links to additional materials and resources. The website and an access code are included with each Instructor Handbook.

Weekly lessons follow a consistent pattern that includes guided reading, chunking (marking words), copywork, and dictation. Each week also features special activities that vary with the level. For instance, Level C has "No Rule Day" with activities to encourage writing. Each level has its own theme. Informative passages in each of the weekly lessons relate to this theme. These passages vary in length from lists of words in Level A to rhymes in Level B, to 60 or so words in Level C, to 100 or so words in Level G. Each weekly lesson starts with reading the passage. All passages are included in the Resources section of the Instructor Handbook.

Chunking is the colorful heart of the SYS program and it's easy to see why the consistent color-coding of the passage words develops visual memory. Chunking involves identifying a phonics pattern within words and highlighting it. Types of chunks are highlighted with specific colors. For instance, vowel chunks are yellow, consonant chunks are blue, bossy r' is purple, silent letters are orange, and tricky y' guy is green. Although the colors don't vary, different levels focus on different chunks. The lessons, especially those in the earlier levels, include instructions on how to identify the chunks.

Chunking, highlighting, and copying the passage make up the activities for the first three days weekly. The third day often incorporates an additional activity: perhaps exercises, perhaps composition. The last two days are reserved for dictation (the same passage, but written from hearing it read). Dictation days are skill building days (not tests). The student is encouraged to write a word several times to see which way looks right (to catch sloppy copy).

The two Student Workbooks provide ample space for all the written work (with perforated pages for easy removal if you choose). Artwork is generous, colorful, and pertains to each level's theme. Students need a regular pencil and colored pencils or highlighters to complete lessons. Workbook sets B-G each include a good-quality set of erasable colored pencils. ~ Janice

This program has helped my struggling speller so much. This will be our 4th year using it.

I've used about 5 other spelling programs w/my 2 older boys and so far this is my favorite. My 3rd son that is finishing 3rd grade went through book C last year and D this year. He is an excellent speller. The colored pencils are monotonous so we got erasable markers on Amazon at it makes it much easier to mark each word w/o getting burdensome. We also skip the last day or 2 of marking words if I think he's "got it". I'm ordering book E for next year and book B for a younger brother (2nd gr).

"Spelling You See" really works. We were REALLY far behind with spelling and she has made tremendous progress.

I have a kiddo who doesn't learn spelling like most kids. We've worked for years trying to find strategies that help him learn within traditional spelling curriculums, but he struggles all week to learn the "list" and then even basic works are not spelled correctly in his writing. I was super excited to find this because it looks like it will allow him to use copy work (which he is successful with) and it puts it into the context of a passage which he can enjoy and will practice basic words too!

We are giving this a try this year as we have a few children struggling with spelling rules and accuracy. I like that these are graduated levels, meaning you can use them for a 3rd- 5th grader, or a 5th-7th grader. There are short stories that they read each week aloud, and then they highlight the vowel and consonant blends with colored pencils that the company supplies. If you have a visual learner, this is going to help them see the actual "spelling rules".

We are finishing Spelling You See Level D with my 4th grader. His spelling accuracy has increased with this curriculum. He is a visual learner, and I feel this curriculum works well with his learning type.

I like that Spelling You See works on spelling and handwriting. We started school with cursive, so I appreciate that this one focuses on "print". My daughter seems to enjoy this and coloring the "chunks".

Great for students who struggle remembering spelling word based on lists. A unique approach that students learn in context rather than trying to memorize lists!

This spelling program, while pricey, is easy to use and unique in that it doesn't use lists that are quickly memorized and then forgotten. Children apply rules weekly that build on one another and learn interesting nonfiction material as they do so. My kids never complain about spelling and they even enjoy giving one another their pre-tests and tests occasionally if mom is short on time.

This is recommended with Sonlight curriculum for Spelling. We used Level D last year. I give my child a standardized test at the end of the year and it greatly improved his spelling scores from the previous year. He enjoyed it most of the time, sometimes when he had to underline all the different sounds everyday he would get frustrated with that and he doesn't really like to write in general, but I feel like the book is colorful, easy to use, and enjoyable. Also helps with dictation skills.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, you would purchase this set plus an additional student pack.

Do you have to buy the Instructor Guide for all levels? Can you just buy it once and use it for all other levels?
A shopper on Aug 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Each manual is level specific. They do all have the same basic introductory information in each manual, but the lesson to lesson information is different. I have kids in levels A, C, and E right now. The only one you really NEED the manual for is level A. It has all the dictation words in the manual and they don't appear in the student copy. Level B is likely similar, but I haven't actually seen it. The manual for C and E certainly make life easier, but probably aren't really necessary. I have 4 kids sitting around the table right now, so I really like just being able to open the manual and glancing at the passage to make sure they've chunked it correctly!

Fantastic program!
Fantastic program! I wish I would have started with Spelling You See from the beginning! I have 5 kids currently working through their books. It was a lifesaver for my extremely dyslexic son. We’re finally seeing improvement and confidence in spelling. And my “natural spellers” love the program too. It’s such a timesaver for me as well.

Top notch! I have seen quick improvement!
I have a sixth grader and wanted her to improve her spelling skills. By the end of the second week I saw improvement already. This is not memorizing lists or taking tests. It does take a few minutes of dictation by the teacher (myself) on 2 lessons per week. Highly worth it! They are using words in a paragraph form and writing it out each day.
