Category Description for Exploring Creation with Zoology 2:

Once students have learned all about the creatures of the air and the basics of zoology, they can take a trip into the depths and discover all the strange and unique creatures of the sea, lakes, and rivers. They'll learn about the special features of swimming creatures, the different watery environments they live in, what their lifestyles are like, and the special circumstances they deal with. Then they take a closer look at specific groups of swimming creatures, including whales, seals, sea cows, sea turtles, sea snakes, sea frogs and toads, primeval reptiles (like plesiosaurs), fish, sharks, rays, crustaceans, cephalopods, echinoderms, cnidarians, sponges, leeches, and more. As they study these creatures, they'll create replicas of them to add to an ongoing "Ocean Box," and conduct neat experiments like discovering the insulating power of fat, investigating how electrical current travels through salt water vs. fresh water, and determining how much of a role temperature plays in tadpole development. They'll also add to their notebooks by drawing the animals in them, comparing and contrasting animals, and much more. Whether the ocean is a familiar place to your children or not, they'll be equally fascinated by learning about the unique creatures beneath the water.

Category Description for Apologia Science (K-6):

This popular elementary science series was originally created when Jeannie Fulbright, author and homeschool mom, was looking for a quality elementary science series that was creation-based using the Charlotte Mason approach. When she didn't find the curriculum she was looking for she decided to create her own. These books use the classical and Charlotte Mason methodology including narration and notebooking to develop critical thinking, logical ordering, retention, and record keeping. The series has since expanded to cover more science topics. New for 2021 is Earth Science, authored by Rachel Yunis, author of Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology.

Since the Charlotte Mason method is employed, every lesson is organized with a narrative, notebook work, an activity, and a project. The student notebook is emphasized in the lessons. Activities and projects bring the lessons to life and use simple household items. While the author's intent is for the parent to read these books to elementary students, a student with a 4th-grade reading level could read these books on their own. The books come from a strong creationist viewpoint, including sections called "Creation Confirmation" and Scripture interwoven throughout the book. Apologia recommends spending an entire year covering each book, taking about two weeks to explore most lessons (some lessons may require more time).

Notebooking Journals were a later - and welcome - addition to the series. As they complete the courses, students were encouraged to compile a notebook to collect and display the information they are learning. The Apologia Notebooking Journals now provide a place for the student to complete every assignment, to record experiments and to display work. Included are weekly lesson plans, templates for recording fascinating facts and assignments, and scripture copywork in both print and cursive models. In addition to full-color Miniature Books (for recording facts and information and pasting directly into the notebook), there are optional ideas (Take it Further in Astronomy; Dig in Deeper in Botany; Fly Higher in Zoology, etc.) for lots of additional activities, projects, experiments, books or videos, all of which correlate with specific lessons in each course. Along these lines, the Personal Person project in both of the Anatomy notebooks is special providing clear vinyl overlays of each body system. Be prepared to cut these out, though.

Junior Notebooking Journals are a simplified version of the orignal Notebooking Journals and require less handwriting but have the same reinforcing activities. These books include coloring pages, project pages, and cut and fold miniature books (same ones as in the version for older students). There is space for notebooking assignments (more drawings, no questions to answer) and scripture copywork (shorter verses to copy either in manuscript or in beginning cursive). Biblical quotations are from the NASB, KJV, NIV or NKJV.

To complete the books all you will need to provide is scissors, glue, colored pencils, a stapler, and a few brass fasteners. There are plenty of activity options in the journals, but keep in mind that based on your student, you may not want to complete every activity. Work can be tailored to each student by simply tearing out unwanted pages from the spiral-bound book. Serving both as a uniquely expressed record of the student's work and as a prized reminder of acquired knowledge, these books will become a homeschooling heirloom.

For convenience, we now offer either Advantage Sets or SuperSets. Advantage Sets include the textbook and either the Junior or original Notebooking Journal. SuperSets include the text, the MP3 Audiobook CD and either the Junior or the original Notebooking Journal.

We also offer lab kits from Nature's Workshop for the elementary courses. Kits contain most of the materials for the experiments, and are conveniently packaged by lesson in the corresponding book (sold separately). There are still a few items you will need from around your house, but with these kits the list becomes extremely short. ~ Janice / Jerry

Category Description for Apologia Science:

Apologia Science courses are written from a Biblical worldview with the homeschool in mind. At the elementary level, courses follow a Charlotte Mason-inspired methodology, with lessons organized around narration, notebooking exercises and hands-on activities or projects. Children at different ages can use these together, learning at their own level. Each course is designed to be teacher-student interactive, so teacher involvement is fairly high at this level. At the junior high and high school levels, science courses are more traditional in nature, with the textbook written to the student. Teacher involvement time at this level is much less than at the elementary level. Textbooks contain student reading, lab instructions, "On Your Own" questions and Study Guide questions. A Solutions Manual provides the answers to these and the test questions. Lab kits are available separately for both the elementary and upper-level science courses which include most of the harder to find items you will need.

Category Description for COMPREHENSIVE SCIENCE PROGRAMS:

We play this while I prep lunch so we can all listen to it. With 10 kids it is essential that my hands continue to work, but I can still be present, push pause and explain if needed, and keep up with what they are learning so I can effectively guide them and answer questions. Invaluable for our family.

LOVE being able to listen and take notes at the same time as I prepare for class.

Great choice for my son who isn't reading on his own yet. We listen to it in the car when we are road-schooling as well.

I really like being able to use this audio CD, because the scientific words are pronounced correctly. Also if I have to work with another child the child doing this program don't have to wait for me.
Pam B on Oct 25, 2020
These audio MP-3s are life savers on the days that I haven't had time to read aloud. My kids older read the chapters on their own and then listen later in the week.
Howard C on Aug 22, 2020
These CDs are great for busy moms! I use them for my early readers to read along with the text. Or I have my kids draw or play while listening to the chapter later in the week. It's a great review of good material.

The audio option has been a huge help for my auditory learner. He got overwhelmed with all the reading so this has helped him greatly!

The audio CD is a great resource that allows students to listen to the text and correct pronunciation of difficult terms, and follow along in the textbook.
Lorie D on Mar 30, 2019
My child loves science, but I cannot spare the time to read this to him. Since he is unable to read it himself, this CD allows him access to the information through independent learning. My goal is that he will listen to the CD while looking at the book.
Michelle P on Jan 11, 2019
Already have the book. Want child to be able to use whenever they have time.
Brian F on Jan 2, 2019
Easy for kids to listen and follow along with the textbook. They will hear the correct pronunciation of the harder words.

We find the CDs do a really nice job covering the material.

I bought it so my 8th grader could hear correct pronunciation of new terms so that she had a better understanding of the subject.

I bought these so it would give mom a break from having to read the sections of these books to my kids. They can be listening while eating lunch or at night. They can even read along. It helps my kids.

I needed some audio for the book so we could listen to it and not have to read it outloud for use in car etc:)

Because my son has dyslexia and needs to be able to listen to much of his schooling (history in this case) instead of trying to read it himself. I also have 6 other children, so my time is limited and I do not currently have time to read outloud to him.

My son is an auditory learner, and i am concerned the text would be too much for him to read on his own. I also feel that with the cd we can take the lesson on the road to fit our family schedule better

We have been using this curriculum for a few years now and have enjoyed it but have trouble getting through all the reading so thought this would help us.
Amy M on Jul 20, 2016
"We found the Audio for Zoology 1 to be very helpful for review, especially while driving in the car. Do not introduce new bits (without the text), as I found that if we tried to move on without the text, they didn't remember as much. When we read the text, I always review the day before's reading, and sometimes the Lesson-to-date (works far better). I don't love all of her pronunciations of the scientific terms, but listen with the children and correct anything to what I learned in science."
Stephanie B on Feb 29, 2016
I ordered this item for a couple of reasons. 1) to give the kids a little variety to listen to other than mommy. 2) to keep down interruptions, I can help the toddler while they're still listening to the lesson.

I plan that we can listen to the text during road trips.

Can I download the audio files from this CD to my computer? I would like to upload them on to my phone so we can listen to them on the go (in the car, etc.).

BEST ANSWER: That's what we do. It's so handy, but it's good to have the book along with it for the diagrams and pictures as its being read.

Love the audio option!!!
I am a mother of six children and I currently home school and use the Exploring Creation science (swimming creatures) with my two older children. I love this audio CD! We do have to use it on our desktop, but it works fine for us. My kiddos love reading along in the book while listening and I believe it just reinforces what they're learning. I am very happy with this product and I would highly recommend it! Both of my children have told me that they are really enjoying learning this way. The author is calm, clear and uses expressions. I also appreciate how you can listen to one section at a time so it's not too overwhelming. We do not follow the full schedule that is laid out for us in the journals, we choose to break it up into smaller segments.
This audio CD is the perfect addition!

Wish I had purchase this sooner!!
I have always liked the Apologia series, but have always struggled to complete the textbooks. My kids cannot read the text completely unassisted and my toddler creates unexpected events often. After using this for only a few weeks, I am totally thrilled. The kids make it through the reading without interruption. It keeps their attention because she reads with an enthusiasm that I do not always possess. Great addition to our science!
