Category Description for MCP Spelling Workout 2001 Ed.:

This updated version is very similar to the older edition. The most noticeable differences are a more contemporary page layout and a reduction in sports-themed headings like "warm-ups" and "pep talks." Other differences include an extra writing activity at the end of each lesson in the student book, but the removal of references to warm-ups, final tests, and bonus words activities. All information and instruction on these activities are now found only in the teachers manual. While you can still "get by" using the program without the teachers manual, you may want the teachers manual to get the most out of the program. Some content has been updated, including several new reading/editing passages and a few new word lists. Aside from these differences most of the pages (while they may not match up exactly in page number) look very much the same. The size/length of the books have not changed. Basically, if youre trying to decide between the editions in your own homeschool, you wont lose out either way. However, if you are using Spelling Workout in a group/class/co-op situation, you will probably want to pick one edition and stick with it to ensure uniformity of word lists, and for ease of checking work. For a better value, homeschool bundles that include the student worktext and teachers edition are now available.

This will be my first time using it. It looks like my child will be able to learn how to spell as well as understand what the words mean.

It was recommended in Susan Wise Bauer's Well-Trained Mind book. My younger son started this series since I was trying it out with his older brother two years ago. They both enjoyed it, breaking up the week's set of words in tangible chunks. It has been a successful tool in building his spelling skills but also his confidence.

My daughter and I really enjoy the series of spelling books and have been using them since starting with Book A. There is phonics woven in, a dictionary of the words in the back of the workbook, along with how to use the words in vocabulary.

So far it's great
I think this is fantastic so far. I like all the different activities they have for the spelling words and that the book teaches them my child to proofread sentences. We just started because the second grade spelling book we had was too easy and this is actually a bit more challenging. So far so good!

So Much More Than Just a Spelling List!
This curriculum really encompasses more than spelling. You begin with a reading passage so the student can see the words "in action". Then there are numerous activities to complete to practice spelling and understanding the words. The final one has the student writing their own passage. My son really likes the proofreading sections. I am using this as a base for our language arts lessons. The only other curriculum I'm using is a Grammar one because I find that this Spelling incorporates so much in it's structure. The teacher's guide is helpful and gives you guidance on enrichment activities and has a 3 day and 5 day schedule for you to choose from. I highly recommend.
