I think it's important for our children, and ourselves, to understand reasoning skills, and logical/critical thinking. It's also extremely imperative that kids growing up in this day in age can spot illogical and manipulative propaganda coming to them from all angles through media outlets and other sources.

Has anyone used this for younger kids? I have a gifted 8 year old and I’m wondering if this would be too much for him?

BEST ANSWER: If he is gifted, then maybe BUT I would suggest starting with the thinking toolbox first as it is seems to be more appropriate for the 8 to 10 range and THEN do fallacy detective. I found that to be a better starting point for my kids. My 10 year old is a bright kid and very advanced in reading. He is doing fallacy detective now and it is engaging and challenging but not too much for him.
I have 2 students, will I need a book for each of them?

BEST ANSWER: There are questions in the book. As long as you have them write their answers on a separate piece of paper rather than in the book, you could probably get away with one book.
Is this meant to be completed in a year? And then thinking toolbox in another year?

BEST ANSWER: My son completed both in a year. One each semester. He answered the questions after reading each chapter.

BEST ANSWER: This is the Workbook Edition and has a 2015 copyright. It has the same content as the previous edition but spaces/lines have been added so the student can write in the book.
Is this the edition with yellow on top and green on bottom? I ordered this on Amazon and the picture looked like this, but they mailed the workbook edition with scripture removed. This is the most only place that I found the old one.

BEST ANSWER: It seems that we may have just switched to the Workbook Edition - or perhaps our graphics have just caught up. I notice the graphic has changed and the book I brought in from the warehouse has green on top and yellow on bottom and is marked as "Workbook Edition." It has a 2015 copyright.

Excellent and fun logic book. Write in pencil so you can erase answers for the next kid.

This book is racist and the authors unknowingly committed fallacies on every page I read. I wish I could give it 0 stars.
There were so many fallacies inadvertently committed by the authors, it was honestly astounding. Plus, this book is racist, misogynistic and written with a clear political bias. I honestly can’t even figure out what they know about actual fallacies or logic. Reading it did lead to a discussion about how the authors were motivated by their own social biases and beliefs. Unfortunately, I didn’t look the authors up before I bought the book. But when I finally did, I couldn’t find any ways in which they would be qualified to write a book about logic or fallacy. Even without all that, the questions and exercises at the end of each chapter were at best confusing and nonsensical. I find it strange and alarming that so many people seem to connect with the ideas and descriptions in this book. I’ve never written a review of anything on the internet before but I was compelled to share, especially because the many positive reviews led me to purchase this book.

We are really enjoying this book. The writing style and examples are very engaging. Sadly, most of the fallacies outlined in the book are new to me. I'm excited for my children to learn these BEFORE their adult years.

Newest edition completely void of Christian content
i bought this edition because it was the only one available at RR and i was initially impressed with the 2 additional chapters. Much to my dismay, i realised that the 2015 edition has completely wiped away ALL of the Christian content from the book; from “the vision of Christian logic”to the scripture verses dispersed throughout the earlier editions. Perhaps the authors are tying to appeal to a larger audience, but i will be looking for a used earlier edition to teach our homeschooling coop class.

Much needed
This book is very good for middle school to high school. I am planning to use it with high school juniors and seniors and college freshmen. Therefore, I am skipping the first three chapters. Younger kids need the whole thing. Everybody needs the rest. Well done!

Love this book! Reading it through with my 8th grader and we find ourselves searching for fallacies everywhere. It says that the curriculum should count as a high school logic class. I would add some additional projects to consider it at that level.

My 9th grade daughter and I are enjoying reading this book separately and discussing it. Sometimes we quiz each other as at the end of each short chapter, you get to be a detective and find the fallacies.

It is important in life to be equipped and to be able to detect bad reasoning As homeschoolers it is also a priority to make sure that our own kids are able to think by themselves in a world where sometimes people assume and deduct things from what they see or knowI was first introduced to The Fallacy Detective while my kids were doing gymnastics last spring I was talking to a woman whose teenagers had done the book and she lent it to me so I could check it out I was totally in love with the book and put it on my want-it list for the future as my kids were not in the age of going through something like this In the meantime I became a fan of Trivium Pursuit on Facebook I personally love the tidbits I receive on email as well So when I became aware that a new edition of The Fallacy Detective was available for review I jumped on the opportunity This book will help you to identify where someone is making a mistake in his thinking I enjoyed reading this book and doing the exercises at the end of each chapter It makes you realize how often you don�t take the time to stop and think before either saying things or just listening to other people Not everything that comes out of the mouth of someone should be taken for granted This jewel of a book will bring you 38 lessons on how to recognize bad reasoning And like I mentioned before each chapter has its own set of exercises As you advance in the book the exercises will cover all the previous chapters The book also includes The Fallacy Detective Game as well as the answer key of each chapter Once you have gone through the book with your teenager it will be easy to practice Just listen to people who have strong opinions or politicians for example The important thing is that you will be able to find the fallacies you are exposed to and point them to othersI even think that the other products from Trivium Pursuit will find their way into our house someday In the meantime I look forward to training my oldest boy to be able to spot errors of thinking I still have a few more years to prepare myself to go through this with him But it will be worth it Maybe I could go through it with my husband while I wait We would be prepared for the next election if we do so *grin*
