Publisher Description:

Exploring Government by Ray Notgrass is a one-semester course for high school. Explore the government of the United States from its beginning to the present with special emphasis on the Biblical pattern for government and on the U.S. Constitution. Learn about the operations of federal, state, and local government, and about issues facing our nation today. Become better equipped to understand, pray for, and be involved in our country's government.

Category Description for Exploring Government (Gr. 11-12):

Like the other Notgrass high school courses, Exploring Government is a well-constructed course with a strong underlying biblical and Christian worldview. Written with the three-fold purpose of educating, inspiring, and (sometimes) warning, there is an emphasis on the biblical basis for government and on understanding the U.S. Constitution. The one semester (1/2 credit) course of 75 lessons is organized into four Parts divided into 15 (weekly) Units. Part 1 provides background information to the formation of American government - the history and development of the idea of government - as well as the aforementioned biblical basis along with a look at the U.S. from the standpoint of being an exercise in government formation. Part 2 examines the U.S. Constitution, the three branches of American government, and the constitutional amendments. Part 3 covers state and local governments along with taxes and budget. Part 4 takes a look at the issues currently facing our government. Each Unit includes an Introduction Page which gives a brief overview of the Unit, lists the lessons for the Unit, and gives a suggestion for an activity - usually writing ideas.

The Curriculum Package includes the Student Text and a collection of historical documents, essays, & speeches called We Hold These Truths (217 pgs, pb). The 387-page, paperback Student Text provides 2-4 pgs of highly readable, succinctly written text for each lesson along with any additional assigned readings from WHTT. Illustrating graphics are well-chosen but not excessive and (disappointingly) black and white although I'm sure this helps to keep the course affordable. As the course progresses the student is continually encouraged to examine the difference between government and politics as well as between what is and what should be. An interesting collection of documents, the WHTT book contains a good selection of "founding fathers" material - the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the Constitution, and others from this time period - as you would expect. There are also some interesting documents highlighting the development of American governmental philosophy (i.e. Magna Carta, etc.) and some key constitutional issues (separation of church and state). There is another collection of recent documents on contemporary issues (the Ten Commandments controversy) but relatively little from the 19th and early 20th century. This is probably due to the fact that many of those documents were included in Exploring America, the author's U.S. History and Literature course. The Quiz and Exam pack which is optional includes both an exam book and an answer key. For each Unit there are sets of lesson review questions and quizzes. There are three comprehensive exams - one for each five Units). The answer key is exactly that - answers to the review questions, the quizzes, and the exams. In general this is a well-done course providing a solid overview of government with a readable text. I could wish the review questions and quizzes relied just a little more on critical thinking and less on information recap. However, the writing assignments are thought provoking and essay-writing is an excellent way to develop critical thinking skills. The author suggests that students can expect to spend about an hour per day on reading and questions. For the teacher/parent there's little that must be done except grading but both parents and students will undoubtedly profit from related discussions. ~ Janice

Our co-op is considering this curriculum for 8&9th grade for possible HS credit. I am a bit concerned it will be too challenging for this age. Any other suggestions if some desire HS credit?

BEST ANSWER: I think it would work for 8th and 9th, because Mr. Notgrass is a good writer and very clear. _We Hold These Truths_ has historical documents, speeches, and such, and younger students may find the reading level more difficult for that book. However, the chapter questions and tests are mostly from the main textbook, so I don't think they would be bogged down and unable to complete the assignments.
When does Rainbow Resource plan to carry the 2016 version of the Exploring Government curriculum that is coming out soon?
A shopper on Aug 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We currently have the new 2016 edition in stock - #45081, #45082, and #EXGVPK.
The government course we used for our other children is dated, I could not find a copyright date for this course. I noticed it covered Hurricane Katrina, but how about more recent events such as the increasing use of executive orders, or the recent supreme court decisions, the fact that the balance of government seems to be unbalanced?
A shopper on Jun 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The edition we are currently stocking has a 2008 copyright but we understand there is an updated edition scheduled for August.

Good foundation
Our daughter learned the history and basics of how our government functions. She says that she especially profited from reading the literature biographies and documents/essays in We Hold These Truths book. Through this past semester, she kept telling me about the stories she was reading and how much she's learning. I plan on having my four younger kids do Notgrass government and economics because I like the combination of biographies, original source documents and their truthful presentation of our government.

I have known Ray and Charlene Notgrass and their son John for several years Ray is a homeschooling father and former minister who now develops and publishes homeschooling curricula I was not satisfied with what we used for our older son Marks senior social studies (how I hate that term) so for Jeremys senior year we purchased some things from Notgrass Exploring Government is intended as a one-semester high school course that provides a half-year credit in government The 75 lessons are grouped into fifteen units which fall into four main parts

Part 1 covers some background material showing the roots of our government in Biblical Western and American History Part 2 deals with the U S Constitution and what it sets forth regarding Congress the Executive the bureaucracy and the judiciary along with the amendments Part 3 discusses state and local governments as well as taxing and spending And Part 4 contains some issues facing American government today Each of the fifteen units is intended to be studied for one week What the student is to do each day and each week clearly outlined Everything is presented from both a Biblical and a constitutionalist perspective

The purpose is to educate to inspire and sometimes to warn the student concerning the governments of the United States the individual states and their local communities in order that he or she might be better equipped to remain prayerful thoughtful and involved with regard to our government There is an accompanying book We Hold These Truths a collection of historic documents essays and speeches in American government plus a quiz and test booklet and an answer key We found it very useful On the one hand it is a rather intensive course that will require students to study hard but on the other hand it is quite simple in that it does not demand a lot of teacher preparation

This homeschool curriculum brings history to life! Your children will enjoy history and reading the stories about different historical figures The document based reading assignments are extremely beneficial for gaining insight into the culture of the time period The curriculum also does a nice job of weaving in biblical concepts and foundations throughout
