Category Description for Language Lessons Series by Sandi Queen:

Pick-up-and-go language arts - Charlotte Mason style. Copywork, dictation, and narration from interesting, vintage works including poetry, speeches, and stories. Full-color art reproductions typically depicting a long ago, slower, more rural lifestyle. A full spectrum of language arts skills starting with phonics and handwriting and progressing through creative writing. A gentle but thorough introduction to grammar and mechanics with periodic review. An emphasis on creative expression and poetry appreciation. What's not to like? This is a far cry from repetitive, dry grammar books and their accompanying boredom.

There are 180 teacher-student interactive lessons in each book. Lesson times are very short (5-10 minutes) in the early books and progress to about 30-45 minutes in the upper level books. The beginning books are scripted while later books progress into a warm, instructive, conversational narrative. These perfect-bound books are designed to become a consumable student portfolio. Often - particularly in the early grades - students are asked to draw pictures on left-side facing pages all of which are left purposely blank. Except for the high school book, copywork/dictation space is provided. Grammar exercises requiring editing or some sort of marking (i.e. circle subject; underline predicate) always have adequate space for completion. There is no prep for the teacher although interaction and discussion with the student and oversight of their work is necessary. Answer keys provide time-saving answers for the objective portions but may not be needed for the younger levels.

Grammar coverage is comprehensive and thorough although practice is minimal. Continual review is provided for all grammar concepts once introduced and skills are carefully sequenced through the years to encourage concept understanding. Descriptive, narrative and creative writing are all covered in varying and increasing (through the levels) degrees. However, paragraph construction skills are minimal and essay construction is found only in High School Volume 2. ~ Janice

Language arts programs listed in this section cover most areas of language arts (reading/literature, writing, grammar, spelling and handwriting) in one curriculum, although some skill areas may be covered with less intensity than a focused, stand-alone course.

I was looking for a gentle Charlotte Mason approach for a child that struggles with writing and language arts.

We have used Language Lessons since we first started homeschooling. We like the short lessons, the copywork included, the reiteration of rules.... our children do well in grammar by using this Charlotte Mason-style book.

My son is completing Secondary Child volume 1. He has done well with that book so we are continuing.

This series has worked really well with my two youngest. I like that it is in small bite size lessons. Sure wish the series had been around when my oldest children were still in school.

I've used this language series before with my daughter when she was younger but had drifted away from it. This year, I chose something else, but after a month, I realize that this style works so much better for her.

My daughter loves history, so I thought having copywork from historical documents would help make it more fun.

I love the full color pictures in the picture study that Sandi Queen includes. It makes it a joy to study grammar:)

I plan to use volume one and two at an accelerated rate doing two lessons a day since the lessons are quite brief and very gentle for this level. We are going through an intensive grammar program this year and next year school year when we use this volume and volume one for 7th grade, it will be a nice change of pace. The samples I have viewed on Queen's web site show a variety of fun quick lessons that will be a nice change from boring 'ol grammar! I also plan on using G.U.M. drops as well.

Should I use volume 1 or 2 of Language Lessons for the Secondary Child for an eighth grader who has used Applications of Grammar Book 1?

BEST ANSWER: I used LL v2 with my 6th grader who has somewhat of a learning disability. She struggles alot with comprehension. The lang. lessons are very short, very easy and ones she could do on her own. I basically used them as review. The many speeches, poems, and documents that were in the book, we used as practice for cursive handwriting.

Much too gentle
After 15 years of homeschooling, I wanted to have more living books as the spine of my children's curriculum, and decided (for this year) to move to a Charlotte Mason approach rather than an eclectic with a heavy classical approach. Miss Mason's approach is very classical, with a broad range of exposure through living books. I have used Susan Wise Bauer's grammar curriculum for years, but decided to try Sandi Queen's to keep lessons shorter. My children (ages 9, 11 & 12) are done with the lesson's in Queen's curriculum in 5 minutes. Even if they had not been formally exposed to grammar before, my opinion is that the lessons at every level of this program (I bought 3 different levels) are much too gentle (easy). The books are beautiful, and I appreciate that Sandi Queen includes things like picture study and poetry instruction and analyzing which are not covered in Bauer's grammar programs, but for us, this program (Language Lessons for the Secondary Child), overall, is covering concepts that my children mastered in 2nd or 3rd grade.

Looking forward to using this.
We haven’t begun using this yet, but I’m very pleased looking through it. Very similar to Emma Serle’s Language Lessons, yet extends beyond elementary grades, and increases appropriately in difficulty. I’m expecting it to provide my child with sufficient writing instruction for a full writing program, but in the CM style we enjoy. Looking forward to using it.

My 11 year old daughter is convinced this is the only language arts program she ever wants to use We had been using Sonlight's language arts program but she was unmotivated to do the writing exercises In addition I had her doing Easy Grammar for extra grammar practice She did not like it So I made the switch to Queen two years ago and the difference has been wonderful My daughter no longer complains about doing her "workbook" for language While similar in concept to the Sonlight program the layout and presentation is nicer and more kid-friendly The beautiful full color prints motivate the student as writing prompts Grammar is thorough enough to discard the Easy Grammar lessons my daughter disliked and the approach is more natural Best of all is the variety and length of lessons Not too much not too little but just right for each age level If you are a Charlotte Mason educator these lessons are an easy way to simplify your language arts program and you can't beat the price I couldn't be happier with this product; it was just what our family was looking for!
