Category Description for State Chronicles Series:

These hardcover state books read like a newspaper (an education in itself for students these days) with headlines and dates, photos and compelling text. Topics are chosen that relate to our modern society whether it is about business, engineering, scientific discoveries, tragedies, politics, sports, racial issues and more. In the back, an 8-page, 2-sided, full-color timeline can be removed and studied. The text seems geared toward about a 5th grade reading level. For the state of Illinois, the timeline covers 1818 to 2018. While the letter from the governor of Illinois was already out of date, the book was a good read! The Educator’s Guide is a good resource for homeschooling families as there are activities that work with a variety of ages. While designed with public schools in mind (secular, includes ELA/evolutionary science/social science standards, content approved by the Board of Ed.), the activities are engaging. Some of these activities include creative art projects, discussion, further research, comparing a contemporary news article, summarizing, and even creating an invention of your own! These supplements would be a great add-on to make your social studies year more personal and fun. ~Sara

We've done the Lets Speak Spanish workbooks for two years, and they were not that helpful, except to teach her some basic vocabulary. I feel more confident with RS to actually help us learn correct grammar and pronunciation.

what does audio companion mean? Is it a disc? Does it come with headset?
A shopper on Apr 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does come with a headset and discs as well as a workbook. Use the disc to install and start learning. We've had some difficulty with the voice recognition. Need to make sure the microphone is in the right position and speak carefully so the program can catch what you're saying. Sometimes it's about the timing, if you speak too soon it won't recognize and you'll have to repeat. Other than that I love this program.
I am curious if Level 1 of any home school Rosetta stone is equivalent to a year of high school foreign language. And also do the home school versions give a way to grade and not just pass/fail by advancement. I saw workbooks, but is there an answer key?
A shopper on Apr 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes to my knowledge it is equivalent to one year. On one of the disc you can print off worksheets and test. It also comes with an answer key. Good luck hope this helped

Good, but needs improvement
We have been using Rosetta Stone Latin Spanish Homeschool Edition for about 8 weeks now. My kids enjoy speaking what they have learned and look forward to their sessions. However, there have been some issues that keep this from being a great curriculum. I had difficulty installing on my Windows 10 OS, and had to install updates immediately in order to install the program. After about 3 weeks, the original installation crashed and all our progress was deleted. I had to reinstall the program, rename it, and we had to start anew. It's been 5 weeks since we have encountered those issues. We also noticed in the pronunciation and speaking sections that you have a limited time to speak. So if you pronounce slowly and correctly, the program usually "hears" an incorrect response. If these issues were addressed by Rosetta Stone, I would gladly give it the 5 stars it has the potential to receive.

I purchased this for my freshman We covered half of the material this year The strength of the program is definitely the listening and speaking component The weakness is grammar The workbook pages appear to be an afterthought written by a fluent speaker without consideration for the limited capabilities of a beginner I am glad I did not purchase a multiple level package deal I will be using the listening and speaking options as a great intro for my younger children as long as they think it's fun However after going through the program myself I feel the claims of avoiding repetition are misleading The only way to learn a language is through repetition and there is plenty of it in Rosetta Stone. Additionally after this experience I have found that the method a child learns a language over the course of many years of total immersion is not equally appropriate for an adult with greater reasoning skills and necessarily limited exposure Merely having seen and memorized the conjugations of "Ser" "Estar" "to make" "to have" regular verbs etc and their applications; various forms of the personal pronouns; a chart of cardinal and ordinal numbers; rules for adjectives; how to make possessives All these things are easily absorbed in a very compact format by someone familiar with English grammar and would have removed a lot of the mystery for my daughter Honestly "to be" is the most common verb in any language it is never regular and there are two versions in Spanish! I have purchased a basic Spanish grammar text and will see how it works I merely perused it while developing a lesson plan and immediately Spanish made a lot more sense and became easier to decipher and properly speak.
