Product Description:

The WriteShop Primary Teacher’s Guide books each provide information on how to organize the study along with plans for using two different levels with two students at different grade levels. Books provide introduction material, information for setting up and supplying a home writing center, specific information for teaching the writing lessons, and evaluation guidelines. Each lesson is based around a theme, but these themes can be altered or adapted to allow for integration of the writing lessons with other theme-based studies. Lesson formats are similar and include guided writing practice, pre-writing activities, brainstorming, a writing project, publishing the project, and ideas for “doing more”. Each lesson includes an activity that reinforces some aspect of the lesson. While the lessons are not totally scripted, they are well laid-out and easy to follow. Teacher prep is minimal requiring reading through the lessons, equipping a writing center that Is either "permanent" or "packable", and occasionally cutting out paper shapes, etc. The heart of the program – guided writing practice – is kept simple (but carefully structured to lay a foundation in writing) and short (5-10 minutes).

Category Description for WriteShop Primary (K-3):

Most homeschool moms recognize the importance of our children developing strong writing skills. But perhaps you're like me, a creditable writer myself but without a clue how to go about teaching writing to my children. I would have been thrilled to find a program like WriteShop Primary. With a reputation for building confident writers through an incremental approach, WriteShop has been a favorite for middle school and high school students for years. Now the publishers are developing an introductory program for very young writers that has the same incremental approach and is structured to provide opportunities for the primary student to feel successful in writing largely because the parent is working closely with the student. This is an impressive program that is carefully sequenced, easy on both student and teacher, and a delight for the eyes. The young child's writing skills are developed because plenty of time is spent on writing activities as well as focused instruction that builds confidence. Each of the three levels can be used independently but the incremental nature of the books encourages going through all three sequentially. Three-week, two-week, and one-week lesson plans are provided for the ten lessons in each book. Your choice of lesson plans depends on what ages of children you are teaching and how quickly you want to get through the material. In other words, if you have a kindergartner, you will probably choose the three-week plan and progress through the books at a rate of one per year. If, on the other hand, you have a second grader, you might choose to do Book B or C using the two or three-week plan or complete Books A, B, & C using the one-week plans. The spiral-bound Teacher's Guide books each provide information on how to organize the study along with plans for using two different levels with two students at different grade levels. Books provide introduction material, information for setting up and supplying a home writing center, specific information for teaching the writing lessons, and evaluation quidelines. Each lesson is based around a theme but these themes can be altered or adapted to allow for integration of the writing lessons with other theme-based studies. Lesson formats are similar and include guided writing practice, pre-writing activities, brainstorming, a writing project, publishing the project, and ideas for "doing more". The Activity Sets that accompany each Book provide worksheet pages that tie together and reinforce skills taught in each lesson. In addition, there are two evaluation charts - each for five lessons. The material from the Activity Set may be reproduced for family use although not for co-op or school use. ~ Janice

Category Description for WriteShop Writing Programs:

WriteShop programs have a reputation for building confident writers through an incremental approach. The first WriteShop programs were written for middle school and high school students, and we have been pleased to see that the series has grown "down" to reach the youngest writers as well. The three branches of the program include the original WriteShop (Books 1 and 2), WriteShop Junior and WriteShop Primary. All levels of the program are well-structured, easy to use and give the parent all of the tools to teach writing well.

I want to try a writing curriculum for my youngest child that struggles with formulating her thoughts and putting them on paper.

This is a thorough program. It starts at the beginning and progresses in small enough increments that children are less likely to become overwhelmed.

I liked the look of the guided writing sessions. We are working through Writing with Ease but my son never gets to use any of his own stories in that program. He loves to tell stories and I don't want to squash his imagination with always copying other works so I decided to alternate this with Writing with Ease.

"This is my favorite Kindergarten writing curriculum. The lessons and activities are well laid out, there is just enough repetition (but still interesting), and the activity sheets are a lot of fun. This curriculum works for Mom AND the kids :)"

BEST ANSWER: These programs are from two different publishers although there is overlap in terms of content at this early primary level. Both programs focus on sentence construction skills and beginning paragraph construction skills. Both programs are also engaging and user-friendly with colorful graphics.

I really wanted to like this book. I loved how it takes the child through the writing process and I really loved the guided writing activities but that was where the wheels came off for us. I printed off the first lesson before I bought the book and did it with my son and it went so wonderfully that I decided to get it. The guided writing in the first three lessons is so spot on with topics of interest for typical 5-8 year olds but after that each guided writing activity is simply “what day is it? What are you going to do? Who are you going to visit? Where are you going to go?” Every lesson is in that vein. I didn’t really need a curriculum for that. Maybe because we are living in a pandemic and don’t go anywhere or see anybody? Anyway, he just dictates whatever stories he wants to me now

Great for Shared Writing
I always incorporated shared writing in my first grade classroom years ago when I was a teacher, and I wanted to do that with my Kindergartener in homeschool. I remember writing a lot of, "Today is Wednesday. We will go to P. E. Jacob lost a tooth!" I was having a hard time figuring out how to do this at home with only one student. Write Shop is scripted, yet flexible, and it is working perfectly!

My son and I started it last week. We're following the 3-day/week schedule, so we're only halfway through the first lesson. I gathered some markers in various colors (we like the Crayola Super Tips). We each choose a color for the day and share the story writing -- each writing in our own color. Right now, he mostly writes beginning sounds for the key words. He also likes to put the periods at the end of the sentences. I anticipate him doing more and more of the writing as we progress through the year.

The book suggests using a chart pad on an easel, but I wanted it to be easy to store, so we are using blank copy paper turned horizontally. I pre-punched holes in several sheets and placed them in a 3-ring binder so they are ready to go. Later in the curriculum, we will be creating themed word lists that will serve as a personal dictionary. The book says to write those on file folders, but again, I want it to be space-saving, so we will write them on paper and place them in page protectors in a section of our binder. I am so happy I found Write Shop Primary. It is exactly what we needed!

WriteShop is well known among high school homeschoolers with the WriteShop series Well the exciting news is that they also publish a writing curriculum for K-3rd graders Each day you have easy activities to do with your child! The strength of WriteShop is that it teaches the skills of the writing process This time you will find a multitude of activities and subjects to write with your kids as well as crafts and picture books It is easy to adapt the WriteShop Primary to accommodate the beginners or more advanced writers in your family You can even use it with pre-writers as you help them to start the thinking process of putting words on paperThis product is recommended for students in Kindergarten or first grade but I adapted it for my 2nd grader I let him decide which subject he wanted to write and he thought it was fun to do This review introduced my child to the process of organizing your thoughts before writing something He loved sitting down with me and writing about a topic he had previously picked It made him think and look for the right words I love hearing his laugh when he thought of something funny to write So precious! The early lessons have the option of being done orally for the child and mom (or dad) would write what the child is dictating I think this is very interesting because it forces us to slow down and speak to one another on a specific subject and to listen to what the child is saying Then if the child can do copy work he/she could easily copy the words the parent has written previously My child was older so he was able to write directly in his book the sentences he wanted to includeThe objective at the end of Book A is to have your child learn how to plan create and publish simple stories with your help Throughout the book the child will learn to generate ideas plan a story before writing it gather information about a specific topic use a story web to organize the information identify the parts of a story (beginning middle and end) choose a title think on how to improve the story and publish the storyI think this series is amazing I could easily adapt it to do the same thing in French Its easy to use and fun to do Sitting together bring togetherness and laughter when your child tells you what he wants to write Yes I do recommend this writing curriculum for K-3rd gradersIn addition to the Teachers guide the Activity Set Worksheet Pack completes the program This Activity Set is an integral part of the program and offers 20 reproducible activity pages to introduce and support the skills taught during the lessons If you intend to get the writing program do consider getting the Activity Set as well as they go hand-in-hand together
