Product Description:

Students watch as the instructor, Wes Olson, explains the definition of life and takes you through the days of Creation and the specimens created on those days. In order, you will learn about plants, water animals, flying creatures, land animals, and mankind, and wrap it all up with lessons about genetics. There are 4 DVDs for a total running time of 4 ½ hours. The author describes this course as a "super-condensed, fun-filled, fascinating overview of the world of biology. If you grasp the basics taught in this program, you'll have a solid understanding of biology. The 4th disc contains the PDF files. High school credits are based on hours spent on a course of study, and 120-180 hours constitutes one credit. This course totals 135 hours if you follow the accreditation schedule. You could add dissection labs or microscope labs for more content. Note that the activities in this course are simple labs like identifying plants and animals or watching a fish, so if you live in a state which requires lab sciences for high school credit you will need to make some additions.

Category Description for The 101 Series DVDs:
Offering engaging visual content, hands-on labs and activities, and printable files, these courses may be the perfect option for your learner. Each course includes four DVDs and PDF files. Videos are well done, with a little humor thrown in to keep the content interesting. Biblical Worldview is woven throughout the course. Along with the instructional DVDs, courses include a printable “Course Accreditation Program” (CAP) and Guidebook . The CAP provides the syllabus for high school credit, field trip suggestions, student notebook directions, and mini-lab instructions. Labs use easily found items. The Guidebook includes the table of contents, segment outlines, discussion questions, quizzes, quiz answers, and an alphabetic index. Guidebook pages follow the points of the video presentation along with black/white illustrations and interesting tidbits of information printed in the margins. Each section includes a multiple-choice quiz and discussion questions. An excellent alternative to the traditional textbook.

Items listed in this section tend to be complete science programs with a teacher and student component, requiring few supplements besides science supplies.

Chose Biology 101 Series because of experience with the Chemistry 101 last year in a homeschool co-op class. Easy to follow videos and concepts explained well. We have visual learners in our household so this is a perfect fit for us. Appreciate the extra Course Accreditation Program to help with different levels of learners. Guidebooks and quizzes are pretty straight forward.

My daughter & I looked it over and decided that this would be a good fit for her high school biology curriculum.
Nicole P on Jul 10, 2020
I chose this based on reviews and the fact that biology has not been a happy subject in our house. Neither of our homeschooled boys care much for biology. We have tried 2 other curriculum's that have not been good fits for them, or me! Hopefully this one will live up to the reviews.
Lauri P on May 29, 2020
It has been highly recommended in many of the homeschool groups I follow, and I thought that it would be a good visual accompaniment to our high school biology curriculum.

I have an autistic highschooler and books don't work. He is entertained by watching not reading and can absorb the infromation from more visual learning.

Needed a more visual and less traditional textbook approach. My son is not super interested in science and this covers necessary topics with out the rigorous workload of other programs. A fun way to study necessary topics without overwhelming him.

I borrowed a couple of dvd's from this series from a friend. It's a very well done series. The presenter is engaging, intelligent, clear, and organized. No silly jokes just for the heck of it, no wild and loud graphics or sound effects that become outdated quickly, just thoughtful, correct, and straight forward facts presented in a logical, and calm manner. The presenter doesn't talk down to his middle grade audience.

Looking to make this into a highschool class with Lab. Has anyone done this? What resource did you use for labs?
Jamie R on May 4, 2020
BEST ANSWER: There are labs outlined in this course. I did those and supplement other labs. I had several other biology curriculums in our library from another child and ones I acquired through a swap. I used some of those. For dissection, I purchased dissection kits through Home Science Tools. They are reasonably priced.
How many days a week did your student work on the Biology 101 course? Thanks!
A shopper on Jul 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The printable guidebook has assignments laid out for a week at a time. It breaks down the amount of time they think a student would spend on each part of the lesson. I always just assigned the week and let my son decide when he wanted to complete it so he gains more experience in planning. Hint-I did check middle of the week to be sure he was making progress and that he had everything he needed for the experiments, activities, and extra reading.
What sort of activities are suggested in the CAP on disk 4? Any writing, additional reading, research, etc?
A shopper on May 29, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, there are a number of activities suggested in the CAP each week. High school students are able to complete most activities independently. For example: Week 13 assignments include watch the DVD, read the guidebook (printed from the CAP), read 3-5 juvenile library books about warm-blooded animals, and read selected scriptures about eating meat. Week 14 assignments are to watch a couple of videos on warm-blooded creatures and research and write a 200 word report on a favorite warm-blooded animal. Week 15 includes instructions to do a dry lab. The assignments are well-ordered and easy to follow.
How strong is the young-Earth content in the videos? Is it just an affirmation of creation and organizing the material according to its days? Or is there a more rigorous apologetic of young-Earth arguments? We are Creationists, but universe-age-neutral, and are looking for compatible resources. We would be using the videos only, not the printable material.
A shopper on May 20, 2019
BEST ANSWER: This is not a rigorous program in general. There is young earth content but it does not have rigorous apologetic arguments for the young age of the earth. It focuses on creation and God as our creator. We have used Apologia science textbooks as well and they definitely have rigorous young earth arguments. I hope that helps put things in perspective.
How long is a daily lesson?
A shopper on Aug 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The lessons are quite short. This is the first science curriculum my son actually enjoyed...loved it actually. I never really timed how long it took him since he is very independent. The average DVD lesson is between 20 and 45 minutes, but they do not watch the video every day just at the beginning of a topic. There is a pdf file workbook on the dvds with quizzes and then an add on booklet to make the curriculum accredited for high school. There is a lesson plan already printed in with the workbook that gives day by day lessons.
Does this course offer any hands-on experiments? Dissections and microscope use?
A shopper on Jun 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This course is video and reading based with very little outlined in the way of hands-on activities. The activities suggested include identifying plants in your yard, visiting local businesses, etc. In my opinion, this course is great for students who aren't geared toward the sciences and won't be pursuing sciences. You could easily add experiments, activities, dissections, microscope labs, etc to the curriculum; there is plenty of time for that.
Do I need to also buy a workbook with the disks?
A shopper on Oct 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There is no workbook. On the last DVD is a printable "Course Accreditation Program" that lists activities you can do to make it a full Biology course. We are finding that we have to add some activities from outside sources to feel like we are really spending enough time on Biology.

Love this
I really like all the dvd 101 series. One of the disks has a file that you can print off all of the quizzes and tests. They are not as involved and comprehensive as most science curriculums. That can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what you are looking for. For me, my kids did not want anything overly time consuming. If your child wants to be a brain surgeon someday, for example, then you might want a different science curriculum.

My teenagers say they are more interesting than they expected them to be. We also have the chemistry 101 series.

Good for Students with Dyslexia
Pros: The video is NOT a lecture but rather shows the student exactly what is being discussed.

Cons: I would rather purchase a textbook than print a "resource guide" which is really a textbook, on my printer. The Field Trip suggestions for each section are expected to be completed yet are childish. The lesson plans are open ended. Each section has two days of lesson plans as follows: "Go to the library and read 3-5 children's books on (topic)" and "Find and read 3-5 adult level books on (topic)." This is not a con in and of itself. It becomes a con because the student then has to take a test on the material taught in the video even though what the student spent two days reading what, more than likely, isn't on the test. The multiple choice tests for each section covers details not big picture ideas, so vocabulary become important.

Even with the list of cons, I would still use this course agian, and in fact, will be purchasing Chemistry 101. The video makes a great core. The mediocre lesson plans can be easily modified and adapted.

We are loving this!
This set of DVDs has a companion workbook that is printable right from one of the disks. This resource digs even deeper into what is said on the videos. It references the Bible and helps students to understand why we can look to the Bible for answers to scientific questions. You will find quizzes to gauge students' learning. There are also lesson plans that lay out in detail how to turn this program into an accredited class. The ideas are great and my children are learning a lot. I would love to try other titles in this series!

Great Creation-Based Biology
We were excited to have found this creation-based Biology course for our teenagers. Neither will be going into a science career, so we feel this gives them the perfect, basic information they will need in life.
