In this exciting addition to his history series, Dave Raymond turns his attention to the period of Modernity and the maturity of Western civilization. Under Daves instruction, students will learn how to apply and refine a Christian worldview to major developments in philosophy, science, and government; personalities such as Newton, Bach, Napoleon, and Austen; and movements including the Enlightenment, Darwinism, Nationalism, and Victorianism.

Category Description for Dave Raymond's History Courses:

Described by the publishers as “ruthlessly Christian,” these courses provide theme-based approaches to history. Either World or American history courses distinguish themselves with the level of rigor, emphasis on primary sources, and Dave Raymond’s digital lectures. Each 26-lesson course builds a similar structure weekly: 60 or more minutes of video lectures; readings in the Student Reader of primary sources (such as essays, speeches, journal writing and more), poetry and literature excerpts; and a short essay exam. Lectures are easily understood, yet challenging, with some video and text enhancements. Typically, the required amount of reading in the second semester doubles that of the first. In addition, each course requires 4 similar projects focused on the time period (a creative representation project; a 3-10-page research paper; a speech with costume; and a 30-40-hour hand-crafted project from suggested options. To represent the year’s work, students will also create a visually and textually engaging portfolio as a culminating project.

Each course requires DVD lectures, the Student Reader (primary sources only), and Teacher Guide. The Teacher Guide and Student Reader are available separately in softcover text. The Teacher Guide provides a scope and sequence (with scoring and completion spaces); brief grading suggestions for all work; brief essay answers for all questions on the weekly exams; and project idea suggestions. The hefty Student Readers will assign the daily readings and lectures; provide questions for the weekly short essay exams; the primary source, poetry, and fiction excerpt selections; and supplemental reading options. The DVD sets provide the lectures. Digital versions of the Student Reader and Teacher’s Guide can be accessed at CompassClassroom.com. Note: the American History DVDs also include the Student Reader and Teacher’s Guide in PDF, mobi and ePub formats as the complete course. What order is recommended for going through the Dave Raymond history?

BEST ANSWER: I believe Modernity is a follow up class to US History. We did US last year and Modernity this coming year. I recall seeing it presented that way on the Roman Roads Media website. But I don't think it matters too much.

Some of the material in Modernity precedes the colonization of the US, for example, the Nicene Creed is Lesson 2 and the 30 Years War is Lesson 3. Modernity seems to be more of a broad worldview development class, while US History is definitely sequential and specific. I hope that helps.

After going 1/3 of the way through the course, I wanted to add more information to my recommendation.

Modernity is not necessarily a history class, but a philosophy class. I say that because, although important events are touched upon, the emphasis is not on what happened but upon its causes and effects upon the ideas of the time.

While important and accurate, the material can be quite dark and bleak at times. I would definitely save it for the more mature student and do US History first.

If you're doing all 4, I'd recommend American History first. I think it's very engaging for younger High School students. After that, if you can, I'd go chronologically. I hope this helps!

According to his website, the books are labeled 1-4 and in this sequence: American, Modernity, Antiquity and Medieval.

Thought-provoking

I'm impressed with the length and breadth of this series. It's not often you can find a DVD series that provides enough video content for every day of the year. It covers all of the traditional "big" events, but also a lot of lesser-known people and events. I'm a history major and I learned an incredible amount. He covers every aspect of culture, art, and music as well, so it feels like a total worldview course. The "Principles" at the beginning of every week require a bit of thought but add to the richness of the course. Some of the readings are probably too long and hard for high school students. One caution: some of the art lectures include nude paintings, and I plan to skip that with my younger high school students.
