Product Description:

This tool is made to be used with standard 1cm base-ten blocks to help children think of whole numbers from 1-199 in terms of hundreds, tens, and ones. The sturdy blue foam frame (11"x 7") comes with 21 number tiles (digits 0-9). Using standard base ten units, rods and flats with the number tiles helps your child picture the numbers more clearly as they place the blocks into the three sections of the frame and attach a number tile to them a definite plus for a student who is struggling with place value as a concept. A small guide with activities and noting CCSS correlations is included in the set. Number tiles are about an inch square and 10mm thick. Base-ten blocks are not included. ~ Sara

Publisher Description:

Use this innovative foam frame to model ones, tens, and a hundred for base ten activities. A great, hands-on way to demonstrate early place value concepts. Use with standard 1-centimeter base ten blocks (sold separately). Includes frame, 21 number tiles, and teaching notes.

Great way to show place value, re-grouping, and base 10 principles in Singapore Math (or any math program for that matter). They are also on a 1cm scale so will match up with cuisenaire rods beautifully.

I love how this holds and organizes the place value cubes instead of having all the pieces sliding when making a number. Great for modeling and then having students do it. I bought 7 sets (1 for me and up to 6 students in a group at a time).

I bought this to show my daughter how place value worked and it quickly became a favorite game, not just for her, but for her younger brothers too. The only downside I've found is that now math time can devolve into playtime with the boys putting random numbers of cubes and rods in for their sister to figure out.

Do 10 cubes fit in the ones place or do only 9 cubes fit (forcing an exchange for a rod)? Similarly, do 9 or 10 rods fit in the tens place? Thanks!
Joanna on Aug 5, 2020
BEST ANSWER: 10 fit. I haven’t even decided if I like it that way or not. I’m tempted to tape a space off as a reminder, but I can’t commit. Hahahah.
Will Math-U-See manipulatives fit in this frame? I already have a set and this looks like a good tool to add to it.
Allison S on Dec 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The Math-U-See manipulatives will not fit. The MUS cubes have 1 cm square raised areas but the total size of the cube(s) is more. They will not fit into this frame which will accept 1 cm cubes.
A review for this product states the ones slot is tight. Since it is foam, could it be cut with an exacto knife to widen that slot?
Allison S on Dec 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you could easily widen it with a sharp knife. Our set doesn’t have that problem, everything fits perfectly. Using this set was my daughters favorite part about doing math in K and 1st grade.

Great fun and easy tool to help kids understand double digits!
My girls have enjoyed using this and almost effortlessly they are getting a grasp on place value already! We used the day’s date to practice with this.

great manipulative but...
The blue foam frame seems fairly sturdy. The value plastic base ten kit works well with the frame. My kids can easily place the blocks in the frame in the hundreds and tens columns. The unit/ones column channel is cut too narrowly to accommodate unit blocks easily. That's super frustrating for my younger children (who are the target age range for this product). In addition, I wish that three of each numeral were provided in the white number blocks. Only the number 1 has three blocks provided. The 6s and 9s are interchangeable, which is nice for general use, but it's frustrating for my dyscalcic student who is using these blocks for remedial use. Overall, a great budget choice, and I'm happy to have purchased the materials.
