Product Description:

Like the other texts in this series, the Earth Science employs a mastery approach to learning science students should learn, master, and retain, what they learn. A curriculum that uses this approach covers fewer topics but covers each more deeply. This text also integrates learning by combining skills in the areas of science, math, science history, and English language usage. Every chapter follows the same format objectives are stated, vocabulary terms presented, textual information numbered and divided into digestible amounts, learning checks' at the end of each reading section, and an exercise at the end of each chapter. Chapters in this book cover Earth in Space, Visualizing Earth, Thinking About Earth, Matter & Minerals, Rocks & the Rock Cycle, Plate Tectonics & Mountain Building, Volcanoes & Earthquakes, Weathering/Erosion/Soils, Surface Water & Groundwater, Landforms, Earth History, Oceanography, Atmosphere, Weather, and Climate & Air Pollution. A glossary, mineral chart, and other resources are found at the back of the text. The author believes in questions that require complete sentences as a response, so you won't find any true/false, matching, or multiple choice questions. Colorful illustrations and photos are used to enhance the content of this small format text (6.75" x 9.75").

The text states three goals for which the student is to strive be good stewards of God's gifts; learn, master, and retain what you learn; learn to keep a lab journal. The student section at the front of the book explains how to keep your lab journal or you can use Student Lab Report Handbook (#47300) for guidelines suggested by this author for keeping a lab journal. This handbook is recommended for use at the high school level. There are eight Experimental Investigations found right in the text and include an overview, basic materials list and step-by-step instructions. This is now the 2nd edition of the text. According to the preface, there were no changes made to the scope and sequence, just corrections to minor errors and typos. Other components will remain 1st edition, and the content is compatible.

Publisher Description:

Earth Science is designed to draw students into close engagement with the subject matter and provide a solid education while fostering a sense of wonder and responsibility for God’s amazing world.

Written for middle school-aged students, this book includes all the popular characteristics of Novare textbooks: smaller profile; vibrant, original, and relevant graphics; lucid conversational prose, and an approach that connects students with real-world science as stewards of God’s creation.

And of course, Novare’s guiding principles of Mastery, Integration, and Kingdom perspective are woven throughout the text. Mastery learning methods are present in the way key concepts, definitions, and skills are repeated. Students rehearse and re-encounter prior concepts as they learn new content with a view toward more thorough retention. We also integrate relevant subjects where possible such as mathematics, history, language skills, measurement and more. This both enhances the reading and demonstrates the connections that exist between all subjects.

Novare’s Kingdom Perspective is evident in the attribution of the marvels of creation to God’s creative power. Author Kevin Nelstead regularly draws the reader to appreciate the intricacy and excellence of God’s works, tying in scripture without becoming heavy-handed.

Earth Science should be about much more than learning about rocks and mountains and the seasons. Think about God’s exciting mandate to steward and exhibit vice regency over creation! The best Christian curriculum will bring students into the wonder of God’s astounding creation and foster the mind of a gracious and caring steward.

Within the context of the fascinating study of landforms, minerals, and planetary phenomena, many other timely and important topics are covered including conservation of natural resources, climate change, pollution, and environmental justice, as well as the current scientific consensus concerning geologic history.

This text, like our others, includes learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter, Learning Checks along the way to review what has been covered, and exercises at the end of each chapter. There is no teacher’s manual, workbook, test book, or separate experiment manual for this text. All supplemental materials are included on the Digital Resources for Earth Science.

Category Description for Novare Earth Science:

We occasionally get a request for Christian materials in the area of science that doesn't include a young earth (literal interpretation) perspective. Novare Science offers a Kingdom perspective that allows students to see God in creation, but takes the stand that science supports a universe that is 13.77 billion years old and the Earth is 4.6 billion years old. However, the theory of evolution isn't mentioned or discussed. Novare (no-VAH-ray) is Latin meaning 'to renew' or 'begin again.' This reflects the attitude of the authors toward science education in our country - it needs to be renewed and refurbished, using research, scientific evidence and forward-thinking strategies while keeping God at the helm.

Like the other texts in this series, the Earth Science employs a mastery approach to learning science - students should learn, master, and retain, what they learn. A curriculum that uses this approach covers fewer topics but covers each more deeply. This text also integrates learning by combining skills in the areas of science, math, science history, and English language usage. Every chapter follows the same format - objectives are stated, vocabulary terms presented, textual information numbered and divided into digestible amounts, 'learning checks' at the end of each reading section, and an exercise at the end of each chapter. The author believes in questions that require complete sentences as a response, so you won't find any true/false, matching, or multiple choice questions. Colorful illustrations and photos are used to enhance the content of this small format text (6.5" x 9.5").

In the sequence of Novare Science courses, this is one of the middle school courses (6th-8th), but is meaty enough to be used at the 9th grade level. Novare is good preparation for higher level science courses, because of the mastery approach and emphases on mastering the concepts.

Category Description for Novare Science Courses:

Novare (no-VAH-ray) is Latin, meaning to renew or begin again. The authors feel that science education in our country needs to be renewed using research, scientific evidence and forward-thinking strategies while keeping God at the helm. Students are taught to see God in creation, while learning current scientific theories that support an old-earth creation. Using a mastery approach, students learn fewer topics in more depth than typical courses. Memorization and review are key with minimal written work. Science, math, science history, and English language usage are integrated. Several Novare courses are used by Memoria Press for their academic rigor and are a good choice for students who need challenging science courses and college prep. Each course offers a recommended downloadable Digital Resource that includes assessments and course planning resources that are helpful for homeschool families, co-ops and classrooms. Resources are reproducible for classroom use. Self-created lab journals and reports are suggested to prepare students for high school and college science material. Also available is a helpful Student Lab Report Handbook for more instruction. See each individual course for content and available supports.

Looking forward to trying this curriculum, which is written from a Christian perspective, but based on solid science. Understanding that a Christian worldview does not have to mean a literal 7-day young earth creation, but can expand to include both solid science and stewardship of the Earth is a rare thing to find in a science curriculum. We've been happy using Elemental Science, but going into higher grades, was looking for something with fewer, but more in depth lab experiments.

I wanted a rigorous science curriculum that was Christian AND taught from an Old Earth position. Very grateful to Rainbow Resource for carrying Novare! It is hard to find Christian text books from Old Earth perspective in the homeschooling world.

Are there really "only" 8 labs? I am considering this for an ad hoc homeschool science group. We would have to travel some distance to meet for labs, so that number would be just about perfect.

What is the author's stance on climate change, pollution and environmental justice?
Sarah on Aug 25, 2021
BEST ANSWER: It is definitely discussed throughout. I feel like it's pretty objective and not fear mongering. It focuses on stewardship and honoring God through our treatment of creation. It stops far short of making a religion or idol out of protecting the environment.
What grades would you say this is best for?
Tara C on Sep 16, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Earth science is typically taught in 7-8th grade, but this text would be challenging for many 7th graders. I think it's appropriate for a 7th grader who is eager, or an 8-9th grader. As an earth science reference to have on your shelf, it would be useful for all of middle and high school grades. The text is dense. Read sample pages and, if you choose to use it, be open to implementing the curriculum in a way that brings joyful learning.

I appreciate the rigorous, mastery based learning system that Novare uses and was hoping to use this in our co-op next year, especially after using Indroductory Physics in the past. Our co-op uses young-earth science curricula, however, so this was not an option as it would require much extra prep for the discussion between the two perspectives. Novare's schedule seems to be really geared towards a Christian school, rather than homeschooling, and is not an easy "pick up and go" for the teacher. The book is beautifully vivid and well laid out and I love they include more topography map work than I've seen in other Earth science books.

Engaging and thorough
So thankful to finally have an OEC perspective in homeschool science curricula. This is an extremely well-written and thorough textbook with engaging enhancement activities. Used with 8th and 10th graders. Short daily readings are not overwhelming. Lots of extras to choose from to expand learning.

challenging text
I bought this for use with my 6th grader. I think it is much too difficult for the typical 6th grader. Words like "plane" and "electromagnetic radiation" are used in the text without explaining their meaning. Some of the questions and activities require math that the typical 6th grader has not learned. We are putting it on the shelf to try again in 8th or 9th grade.
