Product Description:

This unit study takes the hands-on, multi-disciplinary approach of Galloping the Globe and applies it to U.S. geography. This course is intended to teach students about the fifty states and the District of Columbia through six different subject areas and a couple of informational paragraphs. Each subject has a very state-specific application: geography physical and topical forms located in the state; science state trees, birds, flowers, rocks/minerals, and many other science related topics that are important to each state; language arts based on the preamble for each state's constitution; history/biography historical figures, leaders, authors, artists, and others connected to the state; literature set in the states, written by an author from the state, or relating to some other aspect of the state; and Bible using the motto for each state to help in character development. There are also mapping activities and hands-on projects for each state, as well as internet resources that may be useful. A CD-ROM accompanies the book, including over 150 reproducible outline maps, word searches, crossword puzzles, and other puzzles and activities to be used throughout the study. The appendix of the book also contains reproducible forms for character traits (character study and development being an important aspect of this course), state symbols, state science charts, order of statehood, state report, recipes for making maps, biography report, animal report, geography dictionary, state flag pledges, state notebook, and travel & tourism information. As far as teaching tips, the first section contains overviews and tips on each of the subject areas, suggestions for the general activities, website resources, a more detailed language arts guide, teacher preparation points, and ideas for adapting the course for use by older students. Cantering the Country can be adapted to take anywhere from 1 to 3 years. 255 pgs, pb. ~ Zach

I enjoyed Cantering the Country very much and my daughter loved it begging every morning to do geography first! We didn't use it as a complete curriclum rather just as her geography curriculum for the year From what I can tell it would have worked well if that had been the only curriculum except for math for the year The only real preparation on my part was printing off the pages from the cd I did find however that the information given on each state was not complete enough to complete the worksheets from the cd I happened to have 2 other books on states in my own library and between the 3 they worked well I just wish the answers to the worksheets had been included in the material in the book rather than having to look things upOverall I would say this is a good value for the money

This is a multi-level unit study centered around the study of the 50 states Since it is geared towards K-6 I do supplement for my 7-12 graders with the Trail Guide to US Geography by the same company I personally use this program as a supplement to our history program We study history chronologically As we come to each state entering the Union we pull out Cantering the Country and use it to study the state This program is not an "open the book and read the lesson" type of program It is a menu of choices to choose from and you will need to do a little planning to choose how many or few you want to do for each state Each state contains the following categories: 3-4 paragraphs of information on the state Interesting Facts General Reference Geography History & Biographies Science Literature Language Arts Bible & Activities To expound further on some of these General Reference is a list of general information books on the state Geography lists geography vocabulary words and places of interest in the state For example Alabama lists "gulf" and "Gulf of Mexico" Sometimes book titles are included History & Biographies list famous people and events from the state Science is a list of science topics that can be studied These may include the state tree bird flower or rock as well as other topics such as rockets and spacecraft for Alabama; volcanoes for Hawaii; or animals common to the state Literature is a list of fiction books that pertain to the state These can be picture books or longer read-alouds Language Arts is the Preamble to the State Constitution that can be used for copywork Sometimes writing assignment ideas are included Bible contains short character quality studies based on the state motto Activities is a list that ranges from map suggestions to science-related experiments to crafts Using suggestions from these categories you could just do lots of reading for each state (a library is a necessity for this program) Or you can create a memorable state notebook using all the forms that come with the book A CD that contains over 150 pages is included with the book and you can print off whatever pages you decide to use These include simple maps of all 50 states crossword puzzles seek & find puzzles scrambled words a few mazes a generic state report a biography report and an animal report Use the Geography Dictionary page to create a geography vocabulary section in your notebook and the Character Traits page for your Bible studies My children are creating awesome notebooks for themselves using these pages while learning lots about each state If you want to complete this book in a school year you will have to keep each state limited to about 3 days If you are having too much fun to do a state in only 3 days then plan on taking longer to complete the book

After going around the world for 36 weeks with "Galloping the Globe" our child thought it would be fun to follow up with an introduction to United States geography using "Cantering the Country"Cantering the Country" is a unit study curriculum for children in Grades 1-6 which introduces students to the fifty states and the District of Columbia The unit study is divided into the following categories: geography history and biographies science literature language arts Bible activities and internet resources Included with the teacher's guide is an activities cd-rom which contains printables activities and maps To round out your year of cantering I would recommend the following resources: Eat Your Way Across the USA by Loree'Pettit Atlas of the United States by David Rubel Geography from A to Z by Jack Knowlton Earth Science for Every Kid by Janice Van Cleave In God We Trust by Timothy Crater The Children's Book of America and The Children's Book of Heroes both by William J Bennett
