Category Description for Pentime Handwriting Series:

This program is designed to teach children handwriting with a minimum of assistance. Eight black and white workbooks help students master the skill of manuscript writing, transition into cursive, and continue to build cursive skills using smaller and smaller lines. In the first workbook, students focus on writing the individual letters on wide lines with a dotted midline. The correct strokes are shown (and numbered) for each letter along with plenty of space for children to practice. The second book continues practice of upper and lowercase letters but adds words and sentences as well. In place of stroke guides, a dot on each letter shows children where to start forming the letter. The third book (Transition) reviews manuscript for 35 pages and then jumps into cursive handwriting for the remaining 60 pages of the book, where students learn the strokes for individual cursive letters and practice connecting them. The rest of the series allows children to fully master cursive writing as they continually practice by writing the letters and copying longer and longer paragraphs on increasingly smaller lines (rulings gradually decrease from 1/2" in Grade 3 to 5/16" in Grade 8). Paragraphs range from fun sentences to Bible verses (close to the ASV version) to excerpts from essays on nature. Captions in the older grades provide interesting facts, and pretty border sheets to color are scattered throughout. - Steph

Homeschool Handwriting curriculum - it is a simple program that is easy to use and is not too much work for the kids. My oldest has beautiful penmanship after using 4 books in this program. I don't start my kids on cursive until 5th grade because none of them were ready for it before then.

It was inexpensive. We don't always get to handwriting because we do copywork in other areas so I didn't want to spend a lot of money.

This has been a consistently great program for us for learning cursive and practicing penmanship. The use of US states for the level 4 book is a great asset.

I really like the Pentime writing curriculum. Starting from the first book and onwards the workbooks contain character building text, instill good life habits, informative geographical information and nature facts. I think the program is uplifting and inspiring for our kiddos.

I came across the Pentime cursive books when I was in an Amish community near Lake of the Ozarks. I picked up one when I was in town and I liked it so much I ordered one for our older child. I am moving up to a higher grade this year. The letter formation matched well with the way I taught them and the doctrinal copy work appears sound. This year, b/c we are continuing US history I am purchasing the Pentime 4 b/c it focuses more on states in the US than wildlife, etc.

This is our third year using Pentime. It is easy to use and very affordable. I am excited about Pentime 4 this year because we are focusing on United States History and learning States and Capitals, this book will fit right in with the rest of our curriculum.

Could someone post a picture of how all of the Uppercase letters are formed? I'm getting tired of buying books and finding some sort of half print half cursive version of the uppercase letters. Thank You

BEST ANSWER: I don't have our book anymore. (After my son completed it, I removed a few sample pages, filed them away, and recycled the rest.) However, I did find an image on Milestone Books (I tried to add a link, but it wasn't allowed). Look up Pentime Cursive under their curriculum tab. They have sample pages in there. For what it's worth, I really liked this book (the content, the way it was laid out, the quality of paper), but my son hated it! He complained constantly about how "boring" it was. ;) We have since switched to the Pictures in Cursive series. It is more expensive, but my kids enjoy it SO much more! It doesn't have nearly as much practice, but we make up for that by doing other writing in cursive each day.

Highly recommended
Like the other Pentime I am very pleased with the Pentime 4. I’m a homeschooling Grammy assisting my working single mom daughter and I, must say, my granddaughters enjoy doing Pentime cursive and have developed very nice penmanship using these books. I would highly recommend these books on every level.

I think it's great, but my son doesn't!
After using several other penmanship programs, I decided to try Pentime this year. I really like it. The book is attractive, has heavy pages, and interesting copy work (this one is all about the States and includes many inspirational quotes). My son hates it, though! He says it's "boring," but I think it really comes down to the fact that he's having to work more. The lines are narrower (as is to be expected with advancing grades) and the entries are longer that he's used to. That said, I feel that it's a great program and excellent value.
