Category Description for Pentime Handwriting Series:

This program is designed to teach children handwriting with a minimum of assistance. Eight black and white workbooks help students master the skill of manuscript writing, transition into cursive, and continue to build cursive skills using smaller and smaller lines. In the first workbook, students focus on writing the individual letters on wide lines with a dotted midline. The correct strokes are shown (and numbered) for each letter along with plenty of space for children to practice. The second book continues practice of upper and lowercase letters but adds words and sentences as well. In place of stroke guides, a dot on each letter shows children where to start forming the letter. The third book (Transition) reviews manuscript for 35 pages and then jumps into cursive handwriting for the remaining 60 pages of the book, where students learn the strokes for individual cursive letters and practice connecting them. The rest of the series allows children to fully master cursive writing as they continually practice by writing the letters and copying longer and longer paragraphs on increasingly smaller lines (rulings gradually decrease from 1/2" in Grade 3 to 5/16" in Grade 8). Paragraphs range from fun sentences to Bible verses (close to the ASV version) to excerpts from essays on nature. Captions in the older grades provide interesting facts, and pretty border sheets to color are scattered throughout. - Steph

I had such great results with my girl's attitudes when doing 4 and 5 that I'm having my 7 year old do Cursive 3. We had done the Carson Dellosa and it was boring, we've done the Zaner-Blozer it was painfully slow. Sticking with what they usually beg me to do. Sometimes we put on some classical music and it a quiet time of writing and reflection. Big difference in our home.

My second child is about to use this. I love it its on the children's lists of thing to do. They do a page a day and I just check it from time to time. My eldest daughter now has beautiful hand writing with no work from me.

Does this start with single letters? My son has never written cursive before. Also, how big are the lines for writing on? Regular lined paper height, or bigger?

BEST ANSWER: The first 30 pages or so are stroke and letter practice. It would be a fast introduction for someone who hasn't done any cursive before. The line height is just under 1/2 an inch. I have used the 2nd grade transition book, but it does have a bigger line height that seems babish to older kids. FWIW, I generally use Cursive First as an introduction for strokes and letter formation before moving to this book.
What are the margins in this book and how easy is it to use?

BEST ANSWER: In my answer above I realized that I didn't compketely answer your questions, due to a houseful of children being in and out of the room as I was thinking😂. I am not sure of the margins, but the larger font aims at gently introducing cursive. This is a perfect gentle introduction to writing. It is very easy to implement. I simply showed my child how to write the letter, watched them practice a few, and then let them free to work on the lesson. After the first half of the book it is completely independent.
I have used books 1-4. We have had great success. I am considering Handwriting through the USA. I can’t see a picture of the style of writing. They call it traditional cursive . Would Pentime be considered this style? I see a lot about z.b. Style. Is that traditional?

BEST ANSWER: They are not numbered at all, but they are about 42 two page parts, one page type introduces letters with practice and the second page type is copy work of a passage/paragraph or poem. A student needing less could do 1 page per day and have about 84 days, an advanced writer could complete the two page spread. There are just a handful of single pages by themselves.

One of the best & most affordable programs out there!
Pentime is one of the best & most affordable handwriting curriculums out there, in my opinion. I have used it for years with all 7 of my children (child #7 just started this year), and it is so easy to use. It gives clear instructions, and all of my kids have loved coloring the little pictures on the pages. I would definitely recommend this!

Pentime is worth every penny!
The Pentime Cursive series has excellent practice using traditional cursive. The blanks are nice and big for students to feel comfortable using. We tried many other workbooks before this series, and Pentime has very good practice on individual letters and words. Pentime also has useful information in paragraph form to copy.

I use Pentime Cursive book three with my five year old son and we love it I taught him cursive using Can Do Cursive but I prefer to use this book for practice and copywork because it has an older fashioned script and I like for my son to be able to read and copy form this form even though he uses a modern script He enjoys the animal friends and loves to read what they say in the word bubbles I love the copywork exercises and the good values the book stresses I will definitely be using this series for all of my children!
