Product Description:

Although this book was written by a couple of university history professors, it is a refreshing change from the beat-up-on-America crowd. No anti-white-male, anti-Christian, anti-firearm, anti-capitalism stuff here. Instead, the authors speak of a nation to be proud of, a nation that loves public virtue, personal liberty, and private property.

This 15th anniversary edition is the size of a textbook packed with 981 pages, including footnotes and an alphabetical index. However, the text is very readable and interesting, and no review questions are provided. Occasional sidebars delve deeper into a particular subject without detracting from the flow of the story. The book begins with the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus and ends with the war in Iraq and Iraq's liberation. Various eras in our history get about the same amount of ink, with the exception of the Civil War, which is covered in greater detail.

I can't say enough positive about the tone of the book. One of the sentences in the conclusion reads, "The fatal flaw of bin Laden - like Hitler, Stalin, and even the nearsighted Spaniards of 500 years ago - was that they fixed their gaze on the physical manifestations of the wealth of the West, failing to understand that wealth is a mere by-product of other, more important qualities: initiative, inventiveness, hope, optimism, and, above all, faith." Makes you proud to be an American. ~ Bob

Publisher Description:

Over the past decade, A Patriots History of the United States has become the definitive conservative history of our country, correcting the biases of historians and other intellectuals who downplay the greatness of Americas patriots. Professors Schweikart and Allen have now revised, updated, and expanded their book, which covers Americas long history with an appreciation for the values that made this nation uniquely successful.

I homeschooled from 1987 to 2004. However, this book is not for the education of our now-grown children, but for my husband and myself to read aloud together in the evening. My husband was never "into" history, and I feel the need to brush up. In addition, after viewing the movie "Clinton's America," we both realized that even back in the 60's when we were in Jr. High and High School, we were getting a revisionist version of American history in some regards. I can't wait to read this!

Again this was included in our American History choice, but it had the added advantage of have all those documents important to American History all located in one place. It also contained modern documents that might have been harder to locate.

How would you use this in a homeschool setting? There is no teacher manual, tests, or other required showing of understanding.
Katherine on May 27, 2022
BEST ANSWER: It was recommended to go with a curriculum that I cannot remember for certain. It might have been Veritas Press.
I have since kept it because it is an excellent resource with many copies of letters, diary pages, art and photographs representing primary resources.
what year is the copyright edition of this text?
A shopper on Mar 1, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I have the 10th Anniversary copy and the copyright year is 2014. Therefore, I would assume that the copyright year for the 15th Anniversary copy is 2019
I am just wondering if this is the hardcover edition?
A shopper on Dec 9, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I purchased this edition, and it was a paperback book.
What was added to the updated edition?
A shopper on Jul 12, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The preface to this latest edition states the following: “We (the authors) have incorporated new scholarship and updated the narrative through the end of 2018 and the first half of the Trump administration. We have not made significant revisions to any of their major points except to incorporate a fuller discussion of the ‘Pillars of American Exceptionalism.’ Naturally, to accommodate new material, we have had to cut some discussions from previous eras.”
Is this the revised edition?
A shopper on Jul 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I believe this is the revised edition. I bought it to use for US History Class by the Classical Historian. I compared it with the Classical Historian required edition and found not much differences. Hope this is helpful.

Good content
We have not finished the book yet. Some chapters are not friendly to lay people and difficult to follow. But very good info missing from an '80s public school education.
