Category Description for Foerster Math:

Paul Foerster is a name synonymous with math. He has not only taught math, he has a degree in chemical engineering and a Masters in mathematics along with the honor of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching. He has written the successful Algebra 2 and Trigonometry course that is to be used following Harold Jacobs Elementary Algebra and Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding. Paul Foerster has also written his own Algebra 1, which is the same great quality as his other math courses.

Category Description for Foerster Algebra 2 and Trigonometry:

It's here - the recommended sequel to the Jacobs math series. Paul Foerster taught math beginning in 1961 and puts his teaching expertise to work in this text which is designed as a course in intermediate and advanced algebra and trigonometry. After completing algebra 1 and geometry, this book is the next step before calculus. The presentation emphasizes the role of algebra and trigonometry as the foundation for calculus and should take a student 1 ½ to 2 years for completion.

The text is divided into 15 chapters, beginning with a brief review. Chapters 1-8 cover topics that are considered intermediate algebra, 9-12 are advanced algebra, and 13-15 cover trigonometry. Chapters include functions & relations, linear functions, systems of linear equations & inequalities, quadratic functions & complex numbers, exponential & logarithmic functions, rational algebraic functions, irrational algebraic functions, quadratic relations & systems, higher-degree functions & complex numbers, sequences & series, probability/data analysis/functions of a random variable, trigonometric & circular functions, properties of trigonometric & circular functions, and triangle problems.

The appendices offer additional topics that are sometimes part of Advanced Algebra but don't fit into the flow of the text. The topics are operations with matrices, mathematical induction, and exploration of functions. Explanations, exercises, and activities are provided for each topic and you can choose to present them as part of your program. Helpful reference tables, a glossary, and a skills handbook provide additional helps. There are chapter reviews, cumulative reviews, chapter tests, and a final exam found in the text. Note that these are different from those found in the test booklet. An answer key is found at the back of the book for odd-numbered problems in exercises and cumulative reviews, all problems in the chapter reviews, and select problems for appendices exercises, but not for chapter tests or the final exam.

Each chapter begins with a statement of the chapter's content and is broken into lessons. Lessons include instruction, objectives, examples, and practice exercises. Throughout the lessons the student will find blue boxes that contain definitions of important vocabulary and terms. Problems

A friend recommended this as a classic textbook that covers two years of high school math. I have always been satisfied with Prentice Hall textbooks, so I am confident this course will be excellent.

We really liked the Jacob's Geometry and researched that this was the option for Algebra II most like Jacob's style/method.

It was written by a math teacher, not a committee -- no need to jump around in it. It is known as an honors-level course, but that is the barest minimum you can get by with if your major in college requires calculus. No fluff (i.e. explanations of ecosystems in sidebars, random color photos) but lots of real world problems instantly applicable to physics. Mastery based. Humor in the word problems. An accessible middle-ground between Saxon and Art of Problem Solving.

We have used the Harold Jacobs Mathematics and Geometry books with great success and this is the suggested follow-on course to the Harolds Geometry. After reading the reviews and description of the text, this seems to be a good recommendation.

We are finishing Jacob's Geometry and our consultant for online school suggested we continue with a text written similarly for Trig and Algebra II.

IS there a workbook that goes with this textbook?

BEST ANSWER: Not that we carry. We carry only the Student Text and the Solutions Manual. You might check with the publisher - Prentice-Hall (Pearson Learning).
IS there a workbook that goes with this textbook?
A shopper on May 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Not that I know of. However, mathwithoutborders dot com has the flashdrive with lessons and answers for purchase.
My daughter doesn't particularly like math although she does well in it. She thoroughly enjoyed Jacobs Geometry because of the way it was written. Foerster is suggested as a followup to Jacobs Geometry. I'd like to know if he has the same style of teaching as Jacobs?
A shopper on Jul 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Dr. Jacobs is the one who suggested that Foerster's Algebra 2 with Trigonometry is a good follow-up to his geometry course. Although the approaches are not identical, there was obviously enough similarities for him to have confidence in the course.

As an update from my review last year: I am very pleased with the progress my students made using this book This deepened their understanding of Algebra and prepared them for college level math Some students are going into calculus after taking this course some into pre-calculus at the college level and others who know they aren't going into STEM careers are very well prepared for college algebra Several have reported gains in their ACT scores in the range of 4-5 points some were higherA few notes about using the book 1) Students were not always pleased about the solutions manual and the very few steps explained in the provided solution It was always enough for me to help them figure out the answer but will be difficult for those who are not already comfortable with math Don't give up and be sure to ask questions when you need to 2) Some problems are dated My students didn't know what floppy disks were (chapter 2 word problems) We could deal with it 3) Foerster assumes you already have a good handle of basic trig (SOHCAHTOA) There is no review of these concepts 4) This book doesn't do a full treatment of the unit circle - so I added that on my own I'll be using this book again this year I highly recommend it for anyone wanting a rigorous treatment as a prep for college math of any level
