Category Description for Memoria Press Third Grade Curriculum:

Grade 3 continues the quality of the classical education, with new moderated pacing, with students working through Ludere and Latina Christiana I, Christian Studies I, English Grammar Recitation 1, D'Aulaire's Greek Myths and States & Capitals over 3rd and 4th grades. Reading includes classics like Farmer Boy, Charlotte's Web, Paddington and Mr. Popper's Penguins. They will also learn about the animal kingdom, poetry and composition. Rod and Staff Math and Spelling Workout are continued.

Category Description for Memoria Press Classical Curriculum:

Memoria Press now offers complete Curriculum Manuals and grade-level curriculum packages for PK-10 using the classical methodology. Recitation is used in every level for memorization of basic facts, systematic phonics and good books are used for reading education, copywork is used for teaching Bible truths, and music and art are included for enrichment in the early (K-3) levels. Each Curriculum Manual contains complete lesson plans for a one-year course of study.

The Curriculum Manuals are well-formatted and easy to use. In the front of each book you will find a checklist of the materials needed at that level, an explanation of this curriculum, instructions for lesson implementation, a recommended schedule and blank schedule for your own planning purposes, and 33 weeks of detailed lesson plans. Lessons include assignments from the books used at each grade level, as well as activity suggestions. The appendices include a variety of material for that grade level, and may include: prayers, letter activities, recitation, memory verses, read-aloud book list, poetry list and selections, and a paintings/music list for kindergarten and first grade. These pages are reproducible for family or classroom use.

Although most of the guides have been available for several years, the curriculum was restructured in 2015, with many of the programs originally included in 3rd grade now with a slower pacing to span 3rd and 4th grade. Guides for grades 3 and up have been modified to reflect this change, while the lower-level guides have only had minor changes. If you are already midway into the program with the original guides, you can still continue in that track with the older guides, now titled Acclerated Classical Core Curriculum Manual. You can find these along with the complete list of curriculum resources used with them on our website.

We have complete grade-level resource packages, consumable packages for “refill,” new user packages for levels that reuse resources from a previous level, read-aloud packages for each level and science and enrichment packages for the early levels. Curriculum resources are also listed individually (see website for specific contents of consumables and read-aloud packages). Please note that several of the programs include First Form Latin and Classical Composition, which should be completed in order, regardless of what is in the grade level package. If you have a student entering the program after fourth grade, you will need to start them in Classical Composition: Fable Stage and/or First Form Latin instead of what might be in the package.

This series is for the parent who wants a good classical curriculum which is outlined and ready to use. Simply open the book and follow the instructions. You will be well on your way to a quality education for your young ones. ~ Donna

Category Description for MCP Spelling Workout 2001 Ed.:

This updated version is very similar to the older edition. The most noticeable differences are a more contemporary page layout and a reduction in sports-themed headings like "warm-ups" and "pep talks." Other differences include an extra writing activity at the end of each lesson in the student book, but the removal of references to warm-ups, final tests, and bonus words activities. All information and instruction on these activities are now found only in the teachers manual. While you can still "get by" using the program without the teachers manual, you may want the teachers manual to get the most out of the program. Some content has been updated, including several new reading/editing passages and a few new word lists. Aside from these differences most of the pages (while they may not match up exactly in page number) look very much the same. The size/length of the books have not changed. Basically, if youre trying to decide between the editions in your own homeschool, you wont lose out either way. However, if you are using Spelling Workout in a group/class/co-op situation, you will probably want to pick one edition and stick with it to ensure uniformity of word lists, and for ease of checking work. For a better value, homeschool bundles that include the student worktext and teachers edition are now available.

Accelerated curriculum guides are available from Memoria Press for families who wish to move at a faster pace than the Classical Core Curriculum pace.If you begin at the Accelerated Pace and find it too difficult, it is possible to transition to the Classical Core Curriculum.

Spelling workout divides each lesson into tasks to be completed each day. I can give my son his book and he knows what he needs to do based on the day of the week. That makes life just a bit easier for me. The tasks are fun and not too difficult, but help to reinforce spelling of each of the words in the word list.
Paula J on Aug 10, 2018
I love these workbooks
Heidi G on Aug 8, 2018
I love the spelling workout series - it's much more than just spelling. The activities and writing challenges are great.
Grace M on Aug 7, 2018
We are using Memoria Press for 3rd grade, and this is the recommended spelling program.
Jennifer G on Jul 3, 2018
As a result of the first 3 grades in this series, my 9 year old son was able to simply read the lists of words in the final chapters and spell them correctly without studying them. I appreciate the cumulative effect this series is having on his spelling. Very exciting!

I have used this series for many years with all of my kids.

I like this workbook's word selection and stimulating exercises. Also, I like the color of the workbook pages; although, I do wish that the pages were a little bit more tear resistant.
Claudine S on Oct 12, 2017
My daughter was a delayed reader. The Spelling workout series has helped her with spelling patterns and basic grammar. She is able to work through 1 - 2 lessons per week.

My oldest son's spelling is a struggle. He gets bored with the same tasks so I think the activities will make spelling a bit more fun. (I don't have the energy to plan and write up all these activities!)

I wanted a basic workbook that would help my kids with spelling over the summer.

My children love this series. They complete it independently (although I always check that they know the meanings of the words they're learning to spell) and do seem to remember how to spell the words introduced.
Kimberly V on Apr 27, 2017
I love this spelling curriculum. Perfect for us. A good selection of words. Divided well into 180 days, 36 weeks. Easy for me to grade!

I have the teacher editions of this book used previously with other children and wanted to secure the workbooks for the caboose in the family before a new edition came out. Most significantly we really like this curriculum. The format is friendly and fun and teaches basic rules for spelling identified in each lesson.
Diane G on Aug 25, 2016
First year trying this curriculum. We needed level D for a Grade 3 student that is reading and spelling at a higher level.
Kristen I on Aug 19, 2016
I needed a good Spelling curriculum. This one was mentioned in "The Well Trained Mind" and it seemed like a curriculum that I (as the teacher) don't have to be extensively involved in. I have four children, so that is important to me.
Danielle L on Jul 26, 2016
Kids love the workbook style.

Love the Workouts
This is our fourth year and I love my kids using Spelling workouts! It has helped my 5th grader to spell and she flies through each lesson. My fourth grader is getting better with spellig and, while it helps him, I think he would do better with something more exciting. But there might not be much to excite him, language wise, he justloves science & math much more.

MCP Spelling Workout Book D
I am on my third time through the Spelling workout series, currently on Book D with my youngest child. My children & I enjoy the format & flexibility of the workbooks. I go through the list words, the story, and the spelling tip with the child on Mondays, then they do the written exercises during the rest of the week. By the time Friday comes, the list words are mastered. There is a mini-dictionary in the back of each book that contains all of the list words for that level.
