Category Description for MCP Spelling Workout 2001 Ed.:

This updated version is very similar to the older edition. The most noticeable differences are a more contemporary page layout and a reduction in sports-themed headings like "warm-ups" and "pep talks." Other differences include an extra writing activity at the end of each lesson in the student book, but the removal of references to warm-ups, final tests, and bonus words activities. All information and instruction on these activities are now found only in the teachers manual. While you can still "get by" using the program without the teachers manual, you may want the teachers manual to get the most out of the program. Some content has been updated, including several new reading/editing passages and a few new word lists. Aside from these differences most of the pages (while they may not match up exactly in page number) look very much the same. The size/length of the books have not changed. Basically, if youre trying to decide between the editions in your own homeschool, you wont lose out either way. However, if you are using Spelling Workout in a group/class/co-op situation, you will probably want to pick one edition and stick with it to ensure uniformity of word lists, and for ease of checking work. For a better value, homeschool bundles that include the student worktext and teachers edition are now available.

My son has a pretty solid basis of English, but I want to continue to work on spelling skills. This will be daily practice for him.

Start Spelling Workout after you have completed a solid phonics program (my kids used 100 Easy Lessons followed by Phonics Pathways). The ones that did this first abs<br />olutely enjoyed Spelling Workout. I started my older kids on Spelling Workout too soon and it was like pulling teeth. Better to wait and have it be fun (and the ones who waited are also better spellers). I also use it in conjunction with Spelling City to solidify spelling lists.

This is a phonics-based curriculum. It teaches vocabulary at the same time it teaches the rules of phonics, which means it increases reading fluency and reading comprehension, just spelling proficiency.

It's good to make sure I cover various spelling rules in a consistent fashion. Also it's always nice to have something my child can do independently. It's also a great thing to carry along for school on field trip days or going to the dentist etc.
Rachelle H on Jul 14, 2020
This is a no frills spelling program, but I see improvements. I love that this program can be done independently.

Spelling workout divides each lesson into tasks to be completed each day. I can give my son his book and he knows what he needs to do based on the day of the week. That makes life just a bit easier for me. The tasks are fun and not too difficult, but help to reinforce spelling of each of the words in the word list.

We are using Memoria Press for 3rd grade, and this is the recommended spelling program.
Jennifer G on Jul 3, 2018
As a result of the first 3 grades in this series, my 9 year old son was able to simply read the lists of words in the final chapters and spell them correctly without studying them. I appreciate the cumulative effect this series is having on his spelling. Very exciting!

I like this workbook's word selection and stimulating exercises. Also, I like the color of the workbook pages; although, I do wish that the pages were a little bit more tear resistant.

My child is delayed in spelling. How do I figure out which level to use?
Joy on Jun 16, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Working sequentially through the book is one good option. Another option is to start at the level that corresponds to the comfortable reading level of your student.

Love the Workouts
This is our fourth year and I love my kids using Spelling workouts! It has helped my 5th grader to spell and she flies through each lesson. My fourth grader is getting better with spellig and, while it helps him, I think he would do better with something more exciting. But there might not be much to excite him, language wise, he justloves science & math much more.

MCP Spelling Workout Book D
I am on my third time through the Spelling workout series, currently on Book D with my youngest child. My children & I enjoy the format & flexibility of the workbooks. I go through the list words, the story, and the spelling tip with the child on Mondays, then they do the written exercises during the rest of the week. By the time Friday comes, the list words are mastered. There is a mini-dictionary in the back of each book that contains all of the list words for that level.
