Description
Eleven chapters each focus on a geography topic, including the atmosphere, the continents, the oceans, seasons, climate, weather, the structure of Earth, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, latitude, and longitude. Taking basic information like ocean currents, the rotation of the earth and plate tectonics and presenting them to children in an exciting way could have been a challenge, but the author has done a very impressive job here and has taken great pains to present the information in a personal way that children will understand and appreciate. Scattered throughout the readings are narration prompts called, “Memory Joggers." The narration jogs kids' memories about what they have read so far and helps them to remember it by describing it in their own words. If you are familiar with the previous edition, you will notice that much of the readings are the same. Visually and organizationally, there are notable differences in this Master Book's revised edition. Activity pages vary from simple drawing or coloring pages and short answer/fill in the blank questions, to word searches and hands-on projects. Some of the hands-on activities include mapping the location of shoes found washed up on shore (after containers of them were lost at sea) to investigating ocean currents, making an edible earth, identifying rocks, doing an "earth dance," making volcanoes, and much more! These activities have clearly not been "tacked on" just because they are related to the chapter's topic; they are well-chosen and things that kids will definitely enjoy. Also included are prayer prompts and song lyrics from traditional hymns or songs. If the song is unknown to your family, it will be easy to find the tune online. The back of the book includes Scripture-based copywork pages, chapter reviews, semester exams, answer keys, a glossary, and maps. The KJV is used. Families, however, may use their preferred version of Scripture. Activity pages are reproducible for your immediate family. Recommended resources include the New Ocean Book and Map Trek. Projects use common household items. What a fun and appealing way to study world geography as a family! ~ Jess/Deanne
