Product Description:

Spell to Write and Read (SWR) by Wanda Sanseri is designed exclusively to work with the W.I.S.E. Guide for Spelling; together they are considered a complete reading and spelling program. SWR functions as a step-by-step teacher's guide to accompany the specific word lists in the W.I.S.E. Guide. Covering preparation, philosophy, preschool pointers, reading aloud, evaluating achievement levels, and teaching penmanship with phonograms, it also illustrates in scripted detail the spelling dictation process and the spelling rule Reference Pages with instructions and examples. These spelling rule Reference Pages are central to the entire teaching/learning system. Ideas for reading assignments, ways to improve comprehension skills and methods to refine composition skills round out the teacher's tools. SWR is the overall master book of a product combination that works together to teach the first four to five years of language arts or to remediate students of any age.

Category Description for Complete Programs - Phonics:

Programs in this section go beyond teaching children how to read, incorporating phonetic readers, spelling and writing as well. Arranged roughly by grade/age.

Category Description for Spell to Write and Read:

What do The Writing Road to Reading, and this program, Spell to Write & Read have in common? Both have similar (and potentially confusing) names. Both would be labeled intensive phonics. And Both would claim a teaching progression something like this: sounds of speech - building words - developing a spelling vocabulary - writing original sentences - and then reading follows. If that sounds a little backwards to you, remember that these programs have very devoted followers who claim great success using this methodology and Spell to Write and Read is one of Cathy Duffy's 100 Top Picks for Homeschooling Curriculum.

Spell to Write and Read by Wanda Sanseri is an updated replacement for a previous program (Teaching Reading at Home and School) and is designed exclusively to work with the W.I.S.E. Guide for Spelling, also by Mrs. Sanseri. While SWR and the WISE Guide are considered a reading and spelling program, they could also be used as a stand-alone spelling program for a child who is already reading. SWR functions as a step-by-step teacher's guide to accompany the specific word lists in the WISE Guide. Ideas for reading assignments, ways to improve comprehension skills and refine composition skills round out the teacher's tools. In summary, this is the overall master book of a product combination that works together to teach the first four to five years of language arts or to remediate students of any age. The other components include the WISE Guide, 70 Basic Phonogram Cards, Spelling Rule Cards, 70 Basic Phonograms CD, the Primary Learning Log, and the Black Learning Log (more details on these below).

The W.I.S.E. Guide for Spelling (W.I.S.E. stands for Words, Instruction, and Spelling Enrichments) includes a core spelling list that is an updated version of the well-known Ayres List - a foundational vocabulary of 2000 spelling words. Words are divided into manageable daily lessons with 2 pages of teaching ideas for each set of 20 words. Each lesson has preliminary warm-up drills, motivational comments for introducing the lesson, and reminders to teach specific Reference Pages from SWR. Sample sentences are given to illustrate each word. Selections come from the Bible, literature, quotes from famous people, or instructive comments. Each word is divided into syllables and marked for spelling rules. Suggested teacher dialogue is provided. Optional enrichment activities involve a wide variety of subjects - art, literature, composition, grammar, etymology, alphabetizing, analogies, oxymorons, and many more.

This program, like other intensive phonics programs, is exceedingly detailed and painstakingly comprehensive and thorough. The extreme attention to detail would detract for many, but for those who want to follow a thoroughly researched and carefully implemented approach, this may be for you. ~ Janice

I've heard good things, but I'm very nervous that s-2-w-&-r will be a nightmare and result in little progress like teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons program--it looks complicated and is making similar claims, the list of things to buy is long, do I really need all of those things?

BEST ANSWER: SWR and 100 Easy Lessons are two totally different approaches to phonics and reading although there are some visual similarities in the teaching materials. SWR has a strong emphasis on learning the phonograms and spends time primarily on that with the reading aspect following along - unlike 100 Easy Lessons which strives to get the student reading as quickly as possible with a minimum of phonics instructions. SWR is an Orton-Gillingham approach and is more thorough and comprehensive in terms of the phonics that are actually covered, taking the student beyond the ending point of 100 EL.

The SWR Core Kit includes the items needed for the program.

BEST ANSWER: I personally think you will not need to supplement S to W&R. It is a very complete program using lots of learning approaches so I really doubt your student(s) will fatigue from the program or need anything to switch to for a bit or supplement with. I would focus 100% on S to W & R and enjoy the progress your students make.
This recommendation comes from a mom who is about to embark on her own SWR journey. But my student is an alum of Logic of English Foundations A-C, which was based off of the learning methods of SWR. My guy had lots o fun learning with this method. We r using SWR to go beyond what LOE provided him.
I would focus entirely on SWR before you decide to complement/supplement with anything. It's a wonderful method of learning and is completely stand alone in its thoroughness. It's amazing. If only I had learned phonograms and such as a student rather than having to learn it as an adult, my spelling especially, would be all the better for it...
Best wishes!

I love this program and so do my children. It takes a bit to get in the flow of things if you don't go to a seminar but when you do it's solid.

I have tried using this curriculum for 2 years now and I'm not sold on it The first year I tried on my own but it's kinda hard to figure out so I bit the bullet and attended one of the weekend seminars This did really help explain the program better and gave me confidence of what I was doing correct There are a lot of Spelling rules the kids learn in this program however my son who is 10 does not put them into practice when he is writing He has them memorized and when I'm asking he gets them right but when he is writing composition he constantly misspells tons of words! I don't know if any program will help but this one is not My daughter age 8 is naturally a good speller and doing well with this This program is extremely time consuming it takes about 1 hour two days per week and then 30 min 3 more days per week It's very teacher intense! Some of the rules do not make sense to me or my kids and I asked for clarification at the seminar and wasn't impressed Do you hear the "I" in baby? They say that y says "Yeh" "i" "I" and for any word like baby bunny funny the y is standing in for an i because English words do not end in an "i" and they say don't you hear the "I" in baby well I do not it says "E" to me! This is one rule that's frustrating to my children and me I'm just not sure it's practical to remember when to use which rules or why or if there even is a when and why I'm beginning to realize that even with all the rules explained you really do just need to memorize the right way to spell each word I am not a good speller either and am less than impressed with this program

I believe this is THE best program available for teaching students the reasons "why" behind the English language Growing up I was taught that words were spelled a certain way "just because" This program gives reasons for the spelling and makes it incredibly easy for children of ALL ages to spell words consistently well I use this program with my three children ages 8 6 and 5 The program is a COMPREHENSIVE Reading Spelling Writing/Grammar curriculum for K-3 and a COMPLETE spelling program for grades 3-College I love the fact that you only have to invest in one teacher's manual that will take you from preschool all the way through college-level spelling (By the time a student successfully finishes this program he or she will be spelling at a college-level!)I'm trying hard not to write too lengthy of a review but I am just so pleased with the amazing success I've seen in my children This program is easy to use and VERY thorough in its explanations I recommend this program to everyone I know! The only things you need in order to have the complete Spell to Write and Read program would be this book ("Spell to Write and Read") which is the Teacher's Manual and "The Wise Guide" which is your spelling list These two books will take you from the earliest grades all the way through advanced spelling
