Category Description for Horizons Curriculum:

Alpha Omega Horizons is a Bible-based, fast-paced, spiral approach to learning introduction, review, reinforcement. This works well for students who catch on quickly, with constant review that keeps concepts fresh. These are teacher-led courses with colorful student workbooks and thorough teacher manuals. This curriculum offers two courses at the preschool level Preschool for Three's and Horizons Preschool, something not offered in other AOP curriculum lines. These two levels lay a solid foundation for future elementary levels. Although not available for as many subject areas as LIFEPAC or SOS, Horizons is comprehensive in the subjects that are offered. Math is available for K-8, Phonics & Reading for K-3, Spelling & Vocabulary for 1-3, Penmanship for 1-5, Health for K-8, and Physical Education for PK-12. Recently updated, the Horizon's Math curriculum no longer includes Biblical content.

Alpha Omega Horizons now offers complete curriculum sets for kindergarten through 3rd grade. At the kindergarten level, the set includes Horizons Health, Horizons Phonics & Reading, and Horizons Math. First through third grades sets include Horizons Math, Horizons Health, Horizons Phonics & Reading, Horizons Spelling & Vocabulary, and Horizons Penmanship. These sets include all of the required books for each subject both student and teacher.

Category Description for Horizons Math:

Admittedly, no math program will work for everyone - but I find few flaws in this motivating and well-laid out program. Although it may be more advanced for grade level than the "average" program, I don't consider that a negative. Because of the developmental approach to learning in this program, even a non-math type can easily succeed, while the "math whiz" will be challenged by the advanced topics introduced early. Concepts are introduced incrementally, then practiced, developed, and continually reviewed as other concepts are introduced. Horizons lays a solid foundation for numerical literacy with an early emphasis on hands-on, concept learning via manipulatives and one-on-one lessons. The program relies on few separately purchased manipulatives by utilizing common household items and including charts and number lines found in the teacher's handbooks. A useful table in the handbook shows the integration of manipulatives in lessons so you can tell at a glance just what you'll need. Analytical reasoning and mental acumen are stressed throughout the series, and memorization and drill are not neglected. The teacher handbook is the heart of the program, containing daily lesson plans that are easy to implement. Reduced student pages are a tremendous aid in planning and supply answers to the worktext exercises. Besides plans, the handbook contains an overview, materials list, activities, and supplemental worksheets (approx. one for each 4 lessons). Designed for homeschoolers, the activities, language, and lessons require no alteration. There are 160 lessons per level, each requiring approximately 20-30 minutes per day. Tests are given after every 10 lessons to assess retention of cumulative skills. While a good part of each lesson is oral (especially at the K level), the enticing, colorful student worksheets lay foundations for lessons and review concepts previously taught. There are two workbooks per grade level. Please note that the actual lesson is to be taught by you - there are only brief instructions on each page of the workbooks, which are not intended to be self- instructional. Boxed set contains the teacher book and 2 student workbooks. Additional Student Worksheet Packets contain one photocopy of each reproducible master in the teacher book.

Horizons math follows a spiral approach with each lesson including some easier work that was likely already mastered, ongoing work, and thorough introduction of a new concept. I am pleased with the results I've seen from using Horizons throughout elementary math. I see math curriculum as a tool and I can easily decide how many items of a certain concept my child needs to work on to keep it from being tedious or overwhelming.

Horizons is a great curriculum. Comprehensive with content and this level is just colorful enough to be eye catching without distraction for the student. This math curriculum works for both my sons. I feel confident we are learning all the math concepts they need to become proficient.

I used this curriculum with my older child, and loved how the lessons are colorful and in a spiral effect. I also learned that Horizons tends to be a bit higher in level, so it allowed some freedom in slowing down the pace if needed.

I love horizon math. We are currently using 2nd grade and now are moving on to 3rd grade. My child likes the colorful books and variety of activities. The concepts are presented in a clear and systematic manner and there is lots of practice and repetition all throughout the book which makes the concepts easier to retain.

My 3rd grade daughter was halfway through the Saxon 5/4 book and it is just too much for her. Saxon is great, but we needed to just slow down and review and cement our basic facts some more before moving into 5th grade math!

This math curriculum has served our family well for over 8 years now. The new concepts are introduced easily, old concepts are reviewed regularly, and the color graphics and real-life applications make it more appealing to students. The lessons make it easy to break up the weeks and my boys have been able to be self-directing (for the most part) by the 5th grade. Additionally, I find this curriculum to be comparable to more expensive Christian curriculum that I have seen.
Brianne S on Aug 4, 2016

These books are great for teaching kids mastery of basic math skills. I love the spiral approach and repetition. Its a wonderful choice for teaching kids who need a lot of practice and review.

We have been using Horizons for two years, and our family loves Horizons Math! The kids have thrived on this curriculum, both our advanced child and our normal ability child. Highly recommend! Yes, sometimes the repetition can be a tad overdone, but it only serves to solidify the concepts deeply into their heads, making math EASY. When there is an overwhelming amount of similar problems, I sometimes only require my children to do the first row, leaving extra problems to work if needed.
Alisha W on Jan 1, 2016

How often is God/the Bible/religious content mentioned in this? I have heard wonderful things about Horizons but would like to keep religion out of our math lessons. Thanks.

BEST ANSWER: One of the reasons that we love Horizins is because most of their things incorporate a Biblical worldview. Math, however, doesn't.

I could not be happier with the Horizons math program Each day offers some review problems as well as introducing a new concept or building upon a concept already learned This helps to keep my 8 year old interested in math I have found it very easy to teach with minimal preparation The teacher's manual can at times be a little vague in how to teach new concepts but otherwise is a helpful resource I recommend using the placement assessments to decide which level to use as it does seem to be ahead of some curriculum for the same grade Horizons has been a great fit for my family My daughter who was bored to tears with the repetition of our previous program once again enjoys math!
October 15, 2008
I have found Horizons math to be thorough and enjoyable Lessons are colorful and include several different exercises for example a single lesson may cover time money addition multiplication and word problems This keeps each function fresh in the student's mind The only problem I've found is that each set is about a year ahead of my child's level so in 4th grade she's using level 3 etc Also additional practice in multiplication has been necessary Overall it's the best program I've found thus far
