For seventh grade skills and up, Wordsmith is the perfect companion to Learning Language Arts Through Literature. For young people who want to improve their writing skills, step-by-step instructions are provided that will help any writer improve his techniques. The introduction provides a brief review of grammar followed by instruction on building stronger sentences, exercise in descriptive and narrative writing, creating dialogue, story writing, and writing from a particular point of view. Plus, the essential skills of every good writer, practice in proofreading and revising.

Category Description for Wordsmith (6-9):

Lessons build from focusing on interesting word usage to sentence construction, to scene-setting, characterization, and well-written dialogue, and culminate in the writing of a short story at the end. Students can complete the course in about a year, but you might want to alternate lessons with grammar instruction, other technical skills instruction, or other types of writing and "stretch out" the use of Wordsmith over a longer time period.

The description says that this course teaches the mechanics of writing as well as the qualities that make a written piece great vs good. From what I've read, it only focuses on creative writing. From what I saw in the sample pages, it speaks to the student simply, with humor and uses examples that are very easy to imitate.

My three kids enjoyed Wordsmith Apprentice, so we are continuing with the series. I have one natural writer, one reluctant writer and one beginning writer. I am hoping to keep my sanity by using one teacher's guide and keep all the lessons together, while working with them on their individual levels. I like how the teacher guide is laid out. I also like that this program covers sentence diagramming/parsing. We will be using Easy Grammar Ultimate series to accompany this writing program.

Are these books intended to be written in or can I use the same one for two students?
User on Feb 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: They have pages that are to be written on, so it is consumable. I feel that you could probably use one book with two kids, if you just had them write on separate pieces of paper. I guess it depends on your kids.
Do you really need the teacher's guide with these books?
A shopper on Sep 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: In my opinion, no. I have the teacher's guide, but it was really not helpful at all in the way I'd hoped. The teacher's guide does contain some possible answers for the review quizzes at the very end of the student book. Otherwise, the main point of the teacher's guide is to break down what to do each day. In my opinion, you can easily do this yourself, by just having the student work through the book (reading/writing/revising) 4 days/week! :)

Finally a writing curriculum that doesnt elicit moans from my children! While other curriculums have depressed even my creative willing writer this is a breath of fresh air The text is conversational written to the student (and at their level) is engaging and actually fun Assignments are not vague airy-fairy concepts that only cause frustration for students and parents alike They are well-defined projects with ample instruction and clear examples Weve used Wordsmith Apprentice Wordsmith and plan to incorporate Wordsmith Craftsman into our high school curriculum either later this year or next
