Product Description:

Language development is significantly enriched by exposure to good poetry. This book is a great resource because in one volume, it contains many poems that concern noble actions or ideas. This book contains all the poems recommended in Laura Berquist's Designing Your own Classical Curriculum, with substantial additions for the high school years. The extensive collection includes poems by Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry Longfellow, Robert Browning, Robert Frost, William Shakespeare, and many others. It divides the poems into sections that appeal to students in the early years (K-3), at the grammatical stage (grades 4-6), at the dialectical stage (grades 7-9), and at the rhetorical stage (grades 10-12). It provides an introduction that suggests ways teachers can apply the poems to all grade levels. Following some of the poems that have more difficult language are study questions to get students to dissect the poem and really think about its meaning. An index of poets, poems, first lines, dictation selections, and selections to memorize are all included to make it easy to locate specific poems. ~ Rachel S.

looking for a book that would have a nice collection of poems and dictations for my children of varying ages. Saves me time looking for the pieces myself.

I've heard great things about this book, and we're incorporating poetry into our memory work this year.

Is this resource written exclusively for Roman Catholics, or is likewise suitable for Protestants?

BEST ANSWER: It is appropriate for any Christian background, in my opinion. The poems are not of a religious nature for the most part. Some excerpts from the Bible are included.

Helpful Morning Time Resource
My kindergartener has enjoyed learning poetry this year with these wonderful selections. She's memorized 12 poems, thus far. I'm so thankful for such a great resource that will grow with us for years to come!

Poetry is something I haven't much skill with and wasn't sure how to proceed with giving my children a love and understanding for itI'd picked up a couple children's poem collections but they weren't used much Then I tried the Harp and Laurel Wreath I started at the beginning reading it aloud to my 4 and 6 year olds They liked it so I read it every few days adding a poem or two each day Over the weeks they began to pick out favorites and request them then memorize them as they heard them over and over We now look forward to our poetry time The book takes poems from all the collections I had and more They are put in order of understanding and the author had the ability to choose some high interest ones for each age level and choose a variety of subjects This plus the suggestions for memory and dictation really cuts down on teacher time You just use it in order The excellent introduction tells how to use poetry and how good poetry is "formative for the soul" and trains it to the "right kind of internal movement" (p7 & 9) The book progresses through high school and adult poems with poetic vocabulary and definitions study questions (with answers and discussion for the difficult ones) which teach about rhyme and poets and especially help one understand the poem I've enjoyed reading some myself and look forward to reading more There are also some nonpoetic things like letters from George Washington and Patrick Henry and some Latin It is a good course in poetry that will take us from the beginnings through high school in the Charlotte Mason styleVery good information and variety especially for the price Thank you Laura M Berquist!
