Product Description:

This book contains a collection of 93 reproducible activity pages covering a wide range of standard geography skills designed to help younger students gain an understanding of basic geography vocabulary and concepts. Content is divided into 4 distinct sections. Section 1 focuses on map skills and provides 31 activities covering 9 different map skills (what is a map, positional words, cardinal directions, compass rose, map symbols, map key, distance on a map, borders on a map, and map grids). Section 2 provides 29 activities and covers 8 landforms and 3 bodies of water such as hills & mountains; islands & volcanoes; deserts & plains; canyons & valleys; oceans, lakes & rivers; and landforms & bodies of water. Section 3 presents the seven continents and 4 oceans through the use of 21 various activities. Each continent has an introduction page with quick facts and a corresponding activity. A physical map of each continent is provided as well. The last section of the book focuses on animal life around the world. A world map and individual continental maps showing examples of the types of animals found in various regions are provided. Furthermore, review activities are included for the first 3 sections of material and can be used for student skill assessment. Activities range in style and typically include labeling, coloring, cutting/pasting, multiple choice, short answer, and matching. Two full color fold-out maps, a simplified world map, and a landforms and bodies of water map are included for additional teaching instruction. Answers included. - Enh

My Pre-K child is interested in other countries. We also have family in a different state, so I want to help her better grasp the concept of the distance between us, while also illustrating that we remain on the same planet (she also has shown a lot of interest in space...and taking vacations to the moon).

I have seen good reviews on this book and on the Evan-Moor site you can actually flip threw and see everything you are getting in this book, so we had to add it to our curriculum. I love that it is black and white so my daughter can add color and make it into her own.

I chose this workbook because our current geography curriculum is too difficult to figure out and I feel like I am all over the place which does not help my 1st grader. This looks easier for me to teach and had great reviews.

This is a great, easy introduction to geography. Only wish it was designed as a consumable notebook (right now they cut and paste pages have another worksheet on the back). We use it for our first graders.

This is a wonderful geography book. It is nicely illustrated and engaging. Plus it works well for a wide range of beginners. It is not too simplistic for my 8 year old and not too difficult for my 5 year old.

Great book, just wish it had more color
This has been a really good book and my first grader looks forward to doing her page's for the day. The entire book is black and white so if you want colorful workpages this isn't for you.

Excellent Geography Book for Homeschooling!
I used this for the first year of homeschooling my two oldest children (Kindergarten and 2nd grade). We all loved it! It was easy to understand and follow for both of them. It slowly progresses from basic map skills (what is a map, map key, compass rose, etc) to land forms, bodies of water, seas, continents, etc. There are quite a number of cut and paste activities, so the pages should be reproduced, otherwise you might cut important information on the back of some pages.

A great place to start.
This book is a great introduction to geography. I am using it for my Kindergartner. The pages are fun and explained well. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because the pages they are to cut out ruins the reverse page it's to be glued on. Some writing and reading are more geared towards older grades, but I still feel it's a good beginning for us.

I purchased Beginning Geography to use with my first grade son which turned out to be a great fit for his interest and abilities It would also work well with a second grader but is probably a stretch for Kindergarten (they advertise it for K-2) Since our formal history studies don't begin until 2nd first grade was a good time to get familiar with the world in general (globe maps continents and oceans nations and their flags landforms climate etc) I had intended to use Galloping the Globe by Loree Pettit as the spine of my curriculum but found that Beginning Geography ended up being my primary resource instead Galloping the Globe is meant to be a unit study that involves literature history and science as well as geography which was more than we could use for our simple purpose especially in first grade Also it didn't specifically cover things like landforms and climate Beginning Geography is very useful as the spine of a first grade geography course because it is thorough in teaching everything you would cover with this age group (except countries and flags) and it builds sequentially Using it as a syllabus you can be sure that you are covering the important aspects of geography Its weakness is that its not a curriculum (just worksheets) but that wasn't a problem because the content is pretty self-teaching and at this level the parent can easily learn at the same time as the child Having a beginner's atlas available and supplementing with a few hands on activities would add depth to the program but isn't strictly needed I would also recommend finishing Beginning Geography a few months early and then doing cursory studies of individual countries along with coloring pages of their flags (available in Galloping the Globe or other resources) Other related books I would recommend for this age are Maps and Globes by Jack Knowlton and Geography from A to Z also by Knowlton
