Category Description for Wordly Wise - Original Edition:

The original edition of Wordly Wise is also still available, although the tests have gone out of print. It has been preferred by some homeschoolers because it did not include the narrative passage found in the 3000 series editions. As you would expect, graphics and formatting in this edition are dated and there is less use of the accent color. The word lists (different from later editions) require the student to supply the dictionary type material for each listing (located in a glossary in the back of the book).

The A, B, and C Student Books have between 10-12 lessons, each with 8-12 words. Lessons present words and brief definitions, include exercises in word usage, and culminate with a simple crossword puzzle.

Student Books Levels 1-9 introduce 12-20 new words in each lesson. Varied exercises give students experience in defining words, including multiple meanings, and using the word in correct context. At each level, Exercise A requires the student to choose the phrase best fitting the meaning of the word as used in a phrase. In Exercise B, the student must identify the sentence in which the word is used incorrectly. Exercise C (Levels 1-6) has students replacing italicized word in sentences with one of their vocabulary words, giving practice in actually writing the word in context. Exercises D and E in each lesson review the current and earlier lessons, providing reinforcement of previously studied words (use it or lose it!). In fact, each word occurs subsequently from 5 to 15 times in each book. Beginning in Book 4, there is an additional exercise dealing with roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Books 7-9 also include exercises with analogies, connotations, and literal and metaphorical usage. Each lesson in all levels ends with a discussion of words with interesting histories, distinctions between words commonly confused, and clarifications of possible misconceptions.

In all, the 12 books teach 4,050 useful words, carefully selected to provide a core vocabulary useful in a variety of verbal contexts, appropriate to the student's level of experience and writing ability, and keyed to the level of available reading material. Levels 1-3 have word glossaries containing definitions. After level three, students will need a separate dictionary to look up vocabulary words on their own.

Teacher Keys provide answers to the exercises in the Student Books.

Fun way to learn vocabulary - wordly wise on-line program is also great, but expensive when schooling multiple children. Workbooks are cheap and effective.

My children love this program and feel it has been helpful to their vocabulary. They like seeing multiple meanings of the same word together, and a chance to use colored pencils on the illustrations.

Is there a separate answer key for Wordly Wise C or are there answers in the booklet?
A shopper on Apr 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is no answer key with this book. There are answers in a true/false excercise with each set of vocabulary words so the student may self-check immediately. The answers are at the bottom of the page in a random order. There are no answers to any of the other exercises, but they are very easy and quick for the parent to check. I personally love the A, B, and C workbooks and the original Wordly Wise series.
I have a third grader who is an advanced student, but we have Wordly Wise C. Would he benefit from this one, or would it be better for me to get him a higher level?
A shopper on Aug 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I believe your student could benefit from Wordly Wise C. The A-B-C series of Wordly Wise is a good introduction to vocabulary exercises. Book A introduces vocabulary but requires little writing. Book B is a little harder, and Book C requires the student to copy sentences, changing out wordy descriptions for vocabulary words. Book C also eliminates picture clues in the crossword puzzles and is good preparation for the Wordly Wise 3000 series. After Book C, I move my students to Book 2 in the Wordly Wise 3000 series. (I believe it is the third edition). I also require my students to do an exercise or two a day, thus completing a vocabulary list in one week. This permits my students to finish the books a little faster. Most can complete 2-3 books of the A-B-C series in a year, and then they can do the 3000 series faster as well. Books 2,3,4 have only 16 weeks of lessons, so even if they start that series in third or fourth grade, by the time they reach books 5 and 6, they are caught up to grade level and excelling. At that point, the books move to about 20 chapters per book and they cannot go through them quite as quickly.

I would suggest that you go through some of the word lists of Book C (since you already have it) and see if your student knows how to use the words in sentences, showing that he knows the definitions. If not, have him do book C. If most of the words are already familiar to him, and he has no problem writing sentences and answering reading comprehension questions, then move him to Book 2 of the Wordly Wise 3000 series.
