Publisher Description:

Science in the Beginning is the first book in a hands-on, multilevel elementary science series that introduces scientific concepts using history as its guide. Because each lesson is built around an activity or experiment, it is engaging for all K-6 students. In addition, there are three levels of review for each lesson, so the parent/teacher can choose the depth at which each student is expected to grasp the material. The course contains roughly 90 hours of instruction, 35 of which are composed of hands-on activities.

The beginning of history is given in the Bible's creation account, and this book uses the days of creation as a way of introducing a wide range of scientific concepts including the nature of light, energy conservation, the properties of air and water, introductory botany, our solar system, basic zoology, and some aspects of human anatomy and physiology. As the students learn about these scientific concepts, they are constantly reminded of the Creator who fashioned the marvels they are studying.

Category Description for Science in the Beginning:

After much speculation and anticipation, Dr. Jay Wile's new elementary Science curriculum is now available, and, dare I say, it was worth the wait! For those unaware, Dr. Jay Wile is the author of the Jr. and Sr. High Apologia Science curriculum which was specifically designed for homeschool family use and he continues in the same vein with this newest offering.

Designed to be used every other day, this one year curriculum contains 6 units, one for each of the days of creation. Each unit includes 12 foundational lessons and 3 challenge lessons, a total of 90 lessons altogether, giving students an in-depth look at science through the lens of creation. While the challenge lessons may be considered optional if you have a science-resistant child, you will find they add depth and enjoyment to the subject being studied.

With the firm belief that children of all elementary ages can learn together, each lesson offers a hands-on activity or experiment (parental supervision required), three pages of reading and review assignments subdivided into three levels: Younger, Older and Oldest. Wisely, Dr. Jay has given you, the parent, the discretion to select the best level for your student(s), making this practical and easy to use with varied ages and abilities. Let me give you an example of the questions and how their level of difficulty increases from lesson 9, Day 1 of Creation: Younger Students: Where does your eye's lens focus the light that passes through it? What do the rods and the cones do in the eye? Older Students: Make your own drawing of the eye, based on the one you see on pg. 25. Label the cornea, lens, retina, and optic nerve. Make a note that the rods and cones can be found on the retina. Also, point out in the drawing where the blind spot is, and explain why it is a blind spot. Oldest Students: Do what the older students are doing. In addition, I want you to predict what would happen if I changed the instructions in the experiment. Suppose I asked you to hold the book so the red squares are just to the left of your nose. Then, suppose I told you to close your right eye and look at the red and blue circles with your left eye. Then, suppose I asked you to bring the book closer and closer to your face. Can you predict what you would eventually see? Write down your predication and then see if it was correct by actually doing the experiment that way.

The Hands-on Activities or Experiments primarily use common household items, but please note that we are working to offer a prepackaged kit for your convenience, please check online or call customer service to see if it is available. Supply lists by unit and "Materials that may take some time to acquire" are conveniently located in the front of the text, making it easy to secure items ahead of time. Curious about what materials may "take some time to acquire?" Here is a sampling of the above designated items: iodine, medicine dropper, Root Kill, Binoculars, compact fluorescent light bulb, etc. - things that are easy to buy, but you don't necessarily have on hand.

While the hard-cover textbook contains all of the necessary instruction, the author has provided parents with a "Helps & Hints" soft-cover book which offers experiment and activity notes, answers to all three levels of questions and optional tests (with answers) which are reproducible for family use. The author recommends students keep notebooks of activities/experiments and lesson questions to evaluate learning, but has graciously provided optional tests for the families who want to expose older children to test taking or those who like the test taking option for children of all ages.

At this point, you may wonder how this compares to the Elementary Apologia curriculum. At first glance, the main difference is the scope of topics. All science topics are presented in this one book, whereas the Apologia Elementary courses study a single topic in-depth. The format of Science in the Beginning is most similar to the upper level Apologia texts with step by step experiment instructions and lesson reviews. Fully illustrated graphics are plentiful but not as bountiful as in the Apologia elementary. Also noteworthy, each lesson in this book contains 3 pages of textual reading making it less than the average daily readings in the elementary Apologia courses.

This is a well done course that provides younger children an exceptional introduction to science topics along with offering your budding Jr. High student an excellent preparation for the higher level sciences. Set contains the hardcover Textbook and the Helps & Hints, or the books are available separately. ~ Deanne

I've heard good things about it from others who have used it, and I like the concept of teaching science based on what was created during the six days of Creation.

This is an excellent way to see the process of the scientific method. The book is looking at how the scientific process was used in the past to understand what we now learn as fact.

I want a more hands on approach to teaching science.
Sheena H on Sep 18, 2018
We chose this because it is experiment based! The reading portion is quick, and the experiments are simple, yet very engaging! My child is a kinesthetic learning and so the quicker we get to the hands on portion the better! There are much "prettier" science textbooks out there, however, we would never actually do science in our homeschool if the majority of the lesson was reading. This is perfect for my young learner. Using for 2nd grade. Print off the sample lesson of week one and try it out!

We did the first lesson you can download a few from....somewhere on the internet, maybe here. But we did the first one. And the next day, my daughter kept coming back before she was done with other school subjects with "Let's do this! Please!" I love the Science done according to a history timeline, and I personally can't wait until the second book because I am sure I am going to be fascinated. Makes it fun for homeschooling Momma who "knows it all" to have something like this that intrigues me.

How long does it typically take to do a lesson?
A shopper on May 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It all depends on the experiment that precedes the lesson. Some lessons have experiments that need to be started an hour before starting the lesson, and a few have experiments that need to be started the day before. MOST of the experiments are fairly simple and quick to do. It usually takes us anywhere from 20 - 40 minutes to complete a lesson, not including the time for the kids to answer the 2-3 questions at the end. I usually assign that as independent seatwork.
What do I NEED for this curriculum? Is it just the textbook or are there consumable pages? Do I have to buy the lab kit as well?
Sarah K on Apr 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I purchased and love it but have not yet begun using with my child. There are experiments. There are questions at the end of each lesson which you can go through with the child. There is a small teacher booklet that accompanies. The materials kit depends upon how much time you have to assemble yourself at home. I don't have much free time so may purchase the materials kit before I began using. I read through the first couple of lessons before using with my child and love it. I, as an adult, learned many things within those first few lessons that I never knew before. Yet, this first text is accessible to children both in content and language. I was so impressed with the first book that I purchased the entire series and can't wait to use with my child. I have not yet read the other books in series.
did it talk about the world been created in 7 days or does it use to the modern-day scientist theory of how long the world was created or the universe?
A shopper on Jan 27, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The book is divided up so that you study different science topics in the order of the 6 creative periods called "days"but it doesn't make any reference as to how long those days were according to how we measure time. For example day one was light, so all science topics related to light are studied first. Next you study all science principles related to water for the chapter related to day 2. All of the science principles are what you'd be taught in a regular science class in public school however the author does point out how amazing the Earth and its creations and scientific principles are and how they point to a Supreme Creator and couldn't just occur with a big bang theory. He also includes the scripture for each day of creation at the beginning of the new section on each day.
If I use the book, Science in the Beginning, for a multi-grade situation,
does each student need his own book?
A shopper on Jul 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, they do not each need their own book. I current use one book with two 4th graders and a 2nd grader. There aren't any consumable pages in the text. Each lesson has a detailed explanation for the topic that day, suggested experiments and discussion questions. Hope this helps!

Really Enjoying and Learning
We've been using this for several weeks now, I love it's set up. The one experiment per lesson have been easy so far with me only having to buy a battery flashlight and a liter of soda so far, they've all worked so far, and more importantly it's not just taking a facet of the day's lesson and showing you what can happen, it's the basis of the lesson, expanding on the knowledge from the previous lessons and using the new experiment to show off what he's planning to talk about in the current lesson.

After the law of energy conservation lessons, we were randomly watching a youtube video of different camping survival methods of starting a fire and I asked her to explain how the law of energy conservation was displayed in each one and she did easily, using the knowledge gained in this book.

I like the tiered questions and always make her answer the younger kids ones aloud and she's in the older child questions tier but sometimes I'll make her do a bit from the oldest children section if it's not writing intensive. (My daughter has writing difficulties, so I love that the "assessment" is a notebooking activity over a write out the answers activity.)

My girl is 9 and I have a 5 year old and 2 year old boy. The 5 and 2 year old pay attention through the schooling day for when this happens because they want to be in on the experiment, especially after the 'make a fire with a magnifying glass' day. Not only did they ask their dad to make a bigger fire with it when he got home from work, but (since I've now had to hide the magnifying glass!) they extrapolated the lesson and when they're outside eating the edible weeds they've been taught to identify they now "cook" them first. They found the sunniest spot on the deck and now the wood sorrel gets browned a little and they think it's cool that they've cooked them.

I asked the 9 year old what she likes and doesn't like about this book, she said she can't think of anything she doesn't like about it, she likes it a lot.

I think I read somewhere in the description when considering this purchase that this will take about 45 minutes of the day. I don't find it to be that long at all, maybe 25. And there is no prep work besides making sure you have what is needed for the experiment, I just go through about two weeks worth of lessons and put what I need on the grocery list.

This programs has many "new" experiments that I have not seen online. I usually craft my own science program, but this book is VERY comprehensive and easy to follow. Some really great experiments and the kids love drawing the pictures of what will happen or has happened. Anytime a books has the Mentos and Coke experiment, it HAS to be good! Thanks!

An excellent elementary science book
You just don't get any better than a science program written by Dr. Jay Wile, and Science In the Beginning is no exception. Dr. Wile has written a very engaging elementary school textbook with many interesting hands-on activities that demonstrate the concepts for each section very well.
The book makes it easy to adjust the written work for younger or older students. My 6th grade children love using this book.
I understand that Dr. Wile is no longer with Apologia. His work is being published by Berean Builders instead. I'm excited to see what other new materials he publishes through them.

My daughter and I are loving this curriculum. Jay Wile created an excellent science curriculum for kids. We are having so much fun with all of the experiments. The material is challenging for my 5th grader, but she is able to understand it and is learning lots of interesting facts. I wold highly recommend this product.

We are on our final week of lessons for Science in the Beginning From Lesson #1 this book has been a complete delight for me and my daughters I used this with a second and fourth grader and they are both able to understand the scientific concepts I appreciate that there are multiple levels of activities for the girls and I also like that the only required purchase is the actual text Each lesson begins with an experiment that can be done (usually) with common household supplies The lesson then unfolds and the students have a great visual to help them understand the scientific concept Each lesson concludes with students responding in their own scientific notebooks (aka: inexpensive composition books) with illustrations and explanations of what they just learned Both my girls have a year's worth of science in their journals as evidence of what they've learned from Dr Wile After three years of Apologia science and begging my children to assemble lapbook components for their notebooks this has been a breath of fresh air We're looking forward to Science in the Ancient World next year

Science in the Beginning by Dr Jay L WileEureka--I've found it!! If you are searching for a fun easily prepared multi-level God-centered science learning adventure - then look no further Dr Wile takes younger students through a memorable science learning experience following the six days of Creation in his text Science In The Beginning Some of the great scientific topics coordinating with each day of Creation include Light & Energy Water & Air Rocks & Plants The Sun & Solar System Fish & Birds Land Animals & Humans Each lesson begins with a science experiment using household items that this busy mom of 9 could get her hands on quickly I loved the joy and excitement that our children (grades 6th 4th 3rd & 1st) displayed whenever I would say "Time for science!" They would run to get their science journals (that contains drawings of experiments and answers to objective questions) and they always looked forward to trying out the experiments The experiments are awesome! Yes you get to burn things up and explode things and well I don't want to give it all away The multi-level questions and assignments at the end of the lesson aided me in determining if the lesson objectives were learned and also challenged my oldest with a deeper search for more scientific knowledge I love the colorful hardback text and the Helps & Hints handbook (I recommend reading the Help and Hints book before each lesson and experiment as it helps with the success of the experiments and guiding the students to a better understanding of the learning objectives) We were blessed to learn so much about God's world and Creation together in a fun and memorable way Thank you Dr Wile!

We have 6 kids and 4 of them between 8 and 12 are using Science in the Beginning It is awesome and fun! As a physician I have struggled to find curriculum with good range and depth that is from a Christian perspective without asserting specific theological positions This curriculum is exactly what I have been seeking Science in the Beginning is also very friendly for large families because of the 3 levels of response at the end of each lesson Each of my kids have a blank sketch book to draw or write their responses to each lesson I don't have to worry about spending tons of money to purchase workbooks for each child Each lesson takes us 45 mins to 1 hour including the experiment depending on how much discussion we have The length of the lessons results in very manageable chunks for busy families! The level of complexity is also perfect for k-6th grade Some lessons are more complex and some are less complex which creates a very nice balance when you are teaching multiple age groups I can pick up the book and do a lesson anytime it is that easy Virtually no prep time required We love that every lesson has an experiment and that they are TRULY easy to do with every day items around the house I have not had to go shopping for science experiment supplies at all The kids often say "Wow! That's so cool!" when we do the experiments for lessons Perhaps most exciting of all I see them applying their new knowledge to their observations of the world around them Using knowledge from your light lessons my 10 year old came to the correct conclusion on his own as to why sunsets appear with the colors the way they do These lessons stick and the kids beg for science lessons!
