Category Description for Cracking the (GED, ACT, SAT, CLEP, AP):

At some point, those students of yours will grow up (really!) and be thinking seriously about attending college or getting a job, hopefully both! They may need to take the GED, ACT, or SAT tests to do so, as colleges tend to put more weight on these test scores for homeschooled students. The Princeton Review series helps your child to score well on these tests by offering practical strategies for answering questions and by giving helpful insights into how the test writers think (and how they try to trick you!). I appreciate the no nonsense attitude the Princeton Review series books take toward standardized testing. (From Cracking the ACT: ...the ACT is just a measure of how well you take the ACT.The ACT does not measure intelligence, nor does it predict your ultimate success or failure as a human being.) They succeed in demystifying the whole process, from registering to reviewing for the tests. Apparently well-acquainted with the personalities and strategies of the test-makers, the authors do a great job of alleviating the stress, fear, and trepidation teens encounter when faced with taking tests. At the end of each book are practice tests with answer sheets. All are latest editions and 800+ pages, paperback.

Premium Editions include additional online exams, video tutorials, 4,8, and 12 week study plans, and more.

My sister has taught high school English for the past 12 years, and helped loads of kids prepare for the SAT, and Princeton Review is her favorite resource for it, so I picked this one. She said she likes the way it breaks down the various parts of the test into different skill sets, and also that it's funny. Sounds like a winner to me : )

I used The Princeton Review's "Cracking the PSAT" in order to prepare for the exam this school year I enjoyed the conversational tone the book uses to communicate to the reader There are 15 chapters including the 2 practice exams and detailed answers and explanations In the first chapter background information is given about the PSAT/NMSQT and how much you should plan to prepare etc Also in the first chapter is a Session-by-Session Study Guide which I will describe later The second chapter gives details about National Merit Scholarships and general test strategies are given in chapter 3 "Advanced Strategies " "Sentence Completions " "Critical Reading " "Math Basics " "Math Techniques " and "Advanced Math Principles" are the titles of chapters 4-9 Chapters 10 and 11 "Writing Skills" and "Vocabulary " finish up the test preparation part The remainder of the book is comprised of the practice tests along with their answers and explanations A highlight of this PSAT prep book is that concepts are explained in down-to-earth terms Once the concept is introduced several drills are presented giving you the opportunity to apply your knowledge (complete answers are supplied along with detailed explanations of each problem) Now for the real gem of this product: the Session-by-Session Study Guide which is outlined on page 9 of the 2010 edition of "Cracking the PSAT" A total of 9 study sessions are detailed and all could be completed in about 8-10 weeks They are typically comprised of studying 1-3 chapters in the book completing the drills in those chapters and making flashcards for the "Hit Parade" (a collection of words most often found on the PSAT) Helpful hints tips and practical advice are also included in this test prep book All in all I believe that studying this book will really give you the "leg up" needed before taking the PSAT and that you will get the most for your educational dollar
