Although focus does highlight Western cultural growth (including church growth and different cultures’ reactions to it) and the significant elements in world cultures. This Reader (text) contains 84 history lessons, using a 28-week, three-lesson-per-week format. This volume begins with Pentecost and the first followers of Jesus (including Paul) around 29 A.D and continues chronologically through the early church and into the Middle Ages, covering the years through about 1456 A.D. Key historical people and events (with dates to memorize) include Pentecost, the edict of Milan, fall of the Roman Empire, birth of Islam, Battle of Tours, invasion of the Vikings, Leif Ericson, Battle of Hastings, early crusades, Marco Polo, John Wycliffe, and Joan of Arc. Included with purchase of the Reader is an in-text, user-unique, online access code to download the course-required digital PDF Companion Guide. Publisher Description:

The Mystery of History, Volume II continues the story of God’s working in history with lessons that cover the early church that arose after the death of Christ (AD 33) through the Middle Ages and the invention of the printing press. This classical curriculum is written from a Christian, young-earth perspective, and gives students insight into how the Gospel of Jesus is the mystery behind all of history!

Written in a conversational style, this curriculum is arranged by semester, quarters, weeks, and lessons; each quarter begins with an “Around the World” summary of events to introduce the time period; lessons progress chronologically, with each week having 3 lessons, a pretest, review, activities (including Memory Cards), and exercise or quiz. This book integrates the text with write-in activity pages; these pages are reproducible for family use or students can write directly on the worksheets.

The 84 lessons will take a year to complete if you follow a traditional 36-week school year (3 lessons per week). 714 three-hole-punched and perforated pages. Consumable workbook. Activity pages are reproducible for in-family use only.

Linda Hobar, the author of this world history series, states in this book, "I believe history is the story of God revealing Himself to mankind and that He did it most perfectly through the person of Jesus Christ... the "mystery" is the gospel of Jesus Christ." What a refreshing and different view from most world history curriculums! Those looking for a world history program that aligns the stories of mankind with the living story of God will truly appreciate this Bible-centered approach to world history. Picking up where Volume 1 leaves off, this volume begins with the Pentecost and the first followers of Jesus (including Paul) around 29 A.D and continues through the early church and into the Middle Ages, covering the years through about 1456 A.D. The format of this book is very similar to that of the first volume; however, there are some small differences. Firstly, there are fewer lessons (84 as opposed to 108), but these lessons are slightly longer, offering more information on a given topic. Lessons generally take the form of real-life biographies, sharing the stories of men and women who changed the world while simultaneously showing the relationship between God and the world during that period. The fascinating journey across the continents continues as students discover who lived when and the way God worked His plan throughout this period of history.

Purchase of the hardcover Student Text includes a digital access code to download the Companion Guide. This guide includes PDF files of all of the reproducible materials including pre-tests, quizzes, exercises, worksheets, activity instructions, tests, outline maps, resource lists, appendix pages and more. A printed Companion Guide is also available to purchase for those preferring a physical copy. Information to access the digital component is included on a separate card included in the textbook. Shrink wrapped.

The Audio CD Set allows you to listen to author Linda Lacour Hobar read the complete and unabridged text. Students can read along with the author as she narrates the stories or just sit back and listen. Please note the CDs contain the story lessons only and do not include pretests, activities, quizzes, and so forth. At some points in the narration, music has been added behind the author's voice, but non-musical versions are also available for download on the publisher's website. 12 CDs, running time 13 hours, 58 minutes. ~ Steph

Category Description for Mystery of History:

This conversationally written, chronological, 4-year-cycle program is specifically designed so that multiple ages can simultaneously study God’s sovereignty throughout history, from Creation to the 21st century. History is His story, after all. As a Christ-centered study written by a home school mom, each reader volume in the series chronicles key individuals and events that demonstrate the hand of divine providence through the highs and lows of human history. Tough elements are not ignored, and key church history is included. Trace the hand of God through historical events. Volume 1 focuses on Ancient History (ending with the life and resurrection of Jesus); Volume 2 Middle Ages; Volume 3 Renaissance, Reformation & Growth of Nations; and Volume 4 studies Revolutions to Rising Times (1708 - 2010). Each volume provides from 28 to 36 weekly lessons. Reading level will advance in difficulty as learners work through the 4-volume cycle (See individual descriptions for details). This program adapts easily to a classical, Charlotte Mason, or more traditional approach.

The essential hub of the course is the Reader Text, which includes a unique-user PDF download code of the volume-specific Companion Guide. This course achieves a nice balance of structure, routine, and consistent learning versus variety, choice, and independent customization. The 3 weekly required lessons found in the Reader are framed among pleasant layout and appealing full-color photographs. Read the narratives aloud or have older students read independently. The remaining necessary components come from the Companion Guide: teaching information and directions, the scope and sequence, the pretest, quarterly worksheets, tests and quizzes, mapwork, timeline (called the Wall of Fame), and memory cards (key details of each key historical element learned that week). For mapwork assistance, the publishers highly recommend the customizable, digital WonderMaps (item 082644) or these 2 book-based atlases: The Student Bible Atlas (item 00167 particularly for Volume 1) or Rand McNally’s Historical Atlas of the World (item 00733). Thus far, the amount of work I’ve described might suffice for students, particularly in grades 1-6. But then you’d miss out on all the included items which allow you to personalize to your specific goals, family situation, students—and you!

As a convenience, printed Companion Guides are available on our website as separate purchases for Volumes 1-4. Whether using the digital or printed, the additional suggestions and optional resources provide a wealth of options for different ages. The 500+ pages specifically tailored to each volume include the required course items, as well as hands-on activities for younger, middle, and older students (with any needed instructions or templates and photos); field trip suggestions; semester tests; research and writing exercises; a detailed supplementary Book and Resource list (general books, Bible, read-alouds, references, and creation science museums/zoos); and Lesson Resources (specific books, films, and Bible chapters that correlate to lessons in the Student Reader).

Optional resources are now available as digital downloads. These include Challenge Cards, Notebooking Pages, Folderbooks, Super Supplemental Set, and Cookbook. The Challenge Cards contain over 300 question-and-answer cards and a dozen game ideas. Coloring Pages include 36 collage-style coloring pages. Notebooking Pages include ruled & unruled pages for hand-written narration, information pages, and fillable PDF pages for computer use. Folderbooks (a.k.a. lapbook) can be downloaded as well. Providing your own manilla folder, and using the included items, students create folders representing content from the lessons. The Super Supplemental Set includes all 4 items as downloads in one purchase. The Volume 2 downloadable Cookbook includes historical recipes from the Early Church and the Middle Ages. Audio books of each Volume are available for purchase at the author's web site. Make the road to understanding His Story throughout time a delight with this history series! ~ Ruth

Next book in series. Have loved this curriculum for its variety of suggested activities for each lesson from written, to maps, to hands on projects as well as its engaging writing style and chronological, thorough (for middle school) coverage of world history. Excellent list of supplemental books. My 5th grader has loved all the read alouds we picked from her list.

I needed a middle ground between Story of the World and Biblioplan. I still plan to continue using Biblioplan for the History of the Church, Geoography, Studies on the Saints, and recommended book reading, but I will use Mystery of History as my main text for teaching.

This curriculum comes highly recommended by some homeschooling friends of ours. I like the idea that it combines a solid knowledge of the Bible with events of history. It's lovely to incorporate Bible and History--less lesson-planning for me and more enrichment of my son's knowledge of how God had been active in His world from the beginning!

Is this version hardcover? In the description, it says paperback.
A shopper on Jul 11, 2022
BEST ANSWER: It is a soft cover and you have to be careful with the cover so it doesn't tear.
Do the audio cds come with the book?
Lindsay G on Jun 18, 2022
BEST ANSWER: No. They are sold separately. Am not sure whether you can buy everything as a bundle.
While the sample is great for understanding the flow of the material, I cannot imagine spending $50 on something of which I cannot see the table of contents. Could someone list all the chapter topics for me? I have no idea what this curriculum actually covers (and the variety of possibilities with the middle ages is huge).
Jessica on May 6, 2022
BEST ANSWER: There are 84 lessons in this book, way too many topics to list. However, I have found this to be a very detailed representative of the Middle Ages. I have had this copy a long time and was only disappointed that it was not hard cover and the photos were in black and white. I have all four volumes and the volume 3 and 4 were full color hard back. Maybe by now they have it hard back which would be a much better option.
Is this hardcover?
A shopper on Jul 18, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Yes! It is now! We have the current hardcover versions in stock as of July 19, 2021.
What is included in the companion guide that's not included in this book? It looks like I wouldn't need the companion guide; is that accurate?
Amanda on Apr 29, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The Companion Guide includes student worksheets and activities. Originally, these worksheets were part of the text and were reproducible. This series, however, has been going through a format revamping. Volume 2 is the last volume to get the facelift. Now, each volume provides only the textual (i.e. reading) content. The worksheets and activities are included as a digital download. There are printed versions available, if you prefer.

Everything included in the companion guide is available as a download when you purchase the Volume 2 text, 2nd edition.

We still have copies of the 1st edition text available - #013815.
Is this a new edition?
Robbin on Jun 26, 2020
BEST ANSWER: No, we do not yet have the new edition of Volume 2.
Is this the hardcover 3rd edition?
Jodie R on Aug 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: From what I understand there is not a hardcover edition for volume 2 yet. There is one for volumes 3 and 4, and volume 1 has just come out in hardcover but none for 2 yet. I'm sure it will be next.
Is there a Bible curriculum you can recommend to go alongside this, so we can go more in depth?
Beth E on Jul 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: What a great question! I don't know what ages you're teaching but this time period is rich with church history so I would think a Bible study on the core beliefs of the gospel would be awesome. You could use a gospel primer or maybe something like the navigators tools for discipling others. Maybe focus on a specific concept each few weeks with a verse to memorize each week. So many ideas, make it fun.
Is this a hardcover textbook or does it have 3 ring holes to add to a binder?
User on Jul 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The books we are currently (7/17) stocking in the warehouse are paperback and three-hole punched.
Is this Volume 2 like a hardcover textbook or does it have three ring holes to place in a binder?
A shopper on Jul 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Volume 2 is a softcover textbook. However, it does have three ring holes and perforated pages if you choose to put it in a binder or you can cut off the outer binding and have it spiral bound.
is this the text book or the companion guide? the image is of the table of contents of what looks like the companion guide w activities.
A shopper on Sep 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would say Volume II is all of the above. The book includes the text, with worksheets, activities, pretests, quizzes, and answer key. We also have Volume III, which is only the text. Weird.
Are the pages perforated?
A shopper on Jul 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the pages are perforated. They are also punched so that you can just take the pages out and put them into a three-ring binder.

Love with reservations
I love all the Mystery of History books and have them all now. However, I am very disappointed in the volume 1 and 2. They only come in the black and white tear out pages. Unlike the volume 3 and 4 which are hard-back covers with full color pages with beautiful photos. I wish they would make the first two volumes like the last two.

Great History curriculum
I highly recommend the Mystery of History series. I used the first volume for my daughter's 7th grade history and we are currently using the 2nd one for her 8th grade history. I like how it comes from a strongly Christian point of view.
