Category Description for UNIT STUDIES:

What is a "unit study"? Briefly, it's a thematic or topical approach to teaching as opposed to the traditional by-subject approach. Rather than teach each subject separately, a unit study attempts to integrate many or all subject areas into a unified study - usually centered around a particular subject or event. Obviously History (the study of events) and Science (the study of "things") are well-suited to unit studies, and usually form the "core" around which other subjects are integrated. Subjects like Bible, Geography, Government, English (writing), and Reading/Literature, Music, Home Economics, Life Skills, and Art, are usually easy to integrate around a core topics. Remaining subjects (Math, Phonics, Grammar, Spelling) can be integrated to some extent via related activities. Each, however, has its own "system" (progression of skills, mastery of "rules") which must be followed to some degree. Since one of the additional advantages of a unit study curriculum is the ability to use it with students of varying ages and skill levels, these subjects are generally taught apart from the core curriculum. This may be as simple as assigning pages in a grammar or spelling book, or using a separate "program" for Phonics and Math. Unit studies also tend to be more activity-oriented than the traditional approach, a real boon to kinesthetic learners. Advocates of the unit study approach site studies showing that children learn best when learning is unified rather than fragmented and when learning is more participatory than passive.

EVERY BIRTHDAY AND CHRISTMAS I WOULD GET THE NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES FROM MY AUNT. IT WAS THE FIRST THING I OPENED, AND I JUST STARTED TO READ IMMEDIATELY. I HAD A PIONEER SPIRIT AT A YOUNG AGE AND THESE BOOKS THRILLED ME. I PLAN TO GIVE THE BOOKS TO MY GRAND DAUGHTER IN THE HOPE THAT SHE FEELS THE SAME.

My mother too read these books to me several times starting when I was five years old She only read the books where Laura is younger (not The Long Winter or These Happy Golden Years) After our third round I started reading them all over again myself several times - ALL of them and as many more about her that I could find As an adult I have even read them all a few more times admiring the adults of the series more My own set is now quite worn and my own daughter is about to turn five I'm ordering this set for her/us and hope she will love and learn from them as much as I have We who love the books generally despise the TV versions My wish is that those who dislike the TV version but have never read the books would try the books They are very different!(I also HIGHLY recommend The Little House Cookbook even if you don't want to actually cook anything It is full of interesting food history)

Reading every night I read this entire nine book series to my boys three times in a row They loved these books so much that as soon as we finished the series they begged me to start all over again They feel like they grew up with Laura and her family After reading these books they have no interest whatever in the movies or television series They just cannot equal the true events of this family's lives They loved the fact that these events really happened to a real person Laura Ingalls Wilder was a woman who lived from covered wagon to space age and she told the events of her life with such beauty and detail This is a series every American family should read
