Publisher Description:

Explore neighborhoods, communities, the United States, the world, and more with this engaging program that serves as a stand-alone curriculum or as a supplement to your existing lessons.

Although map skills take precedence, this series incorporates the reading and interpretation of charts and graphs into each grade level book. These are colorful, well-illustrated books that are inviting to work in - and much more substantial than the Map Skills for Today series. Each grade level becomes more complex and in-depth with the number of lessons increasing from 21 in the grade one book to 42 in grade eight. Each grade has an overall "theme" (which corresponds to standard social studies focus for that grade) while presenting map skills appropriate to that level (see

The Maps and Charts workbooks are a favorite for all of my kids. This is the one workbook that they actually ask to work ahead in. We are a big fan of this series of books.

These books were recommended by an evaluator to help my children improve their geography skills. They have, indeed, been helpful. Each activity is fairly brief, but together they cover a wide variety of skills. I'm ordering them a for a second year in a row.

My children and I really like the MCP maps, charts and graphs books. I like that it teaches things that my children will be using some day. Colored maps and explanations help learning experience.

I actually felt that despite our use of Sonlight and BookShark for the last few years her map skills could use a little improvement and this seemed like an inexpensive option.

My child is going into 6th grade next year but wondering if we should just start with Level F or do some of the earlier levels first?
A shopper on May 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: My kids started with Level A in first grade, but I think a student that has good reading skills, a basic ability to follow directions, and can figure out how to use a key/legend for a map could manage Level F (my 6th grader's current level). The lessons in the book are self-contained and give clear directions. The maps and charts themselves provide all the information the student needs. Most kids have done the chart stuff by now in math and the maps are clear. If your student does happen to struggle you could always go back a level or two and than pick this one up again in the future--but I don't see any reason why a competent 6th grader would have trouble. These books were always my kids' favorites even in the earlier years when they weren't great readers yet because maps are just plain fun.
Are the maps up to date? What was the year of publication?
Christie P on Mar 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The text was published in 1990, and that is reflected in some of the maps. Russia is referred to as the "Former Soviet Union", and there is a map of Yugoslavia. However, the purpose of the text is really training the student to read maps (and charts and graphs :) not geography so it does not come into play very much. The map of Yugoslavia shows the ethnic groups of the population, so that was actually pretty interesting to compare to a current map.

Excellent product! HIGHLY recommend
EXCELLENT resource! Clear, concise & colorful lessons. Just enough content for my 3 boys to stay interested. This is our second year using them. Boys liked them so much they completed more than one lesson a day most days.

The letter system is a bit confusing but I believe A is for Kindergarten,
B is for 1st grade etc.

Great little workbooks
I purchased all the books in this series to be used as independent work for my kids. I feel it helps fill in the gaps that is missing from other curriculums. We've been using the books for several years now, and the kids have built up their confidence and sharpened their writing, and reading comprehension skills using these workbooks.
